Posted May 24, 20223 yr The trade in preserved Maori heads https://www.stuff.co.nz/sunday-star-times/features/feature-archive/212741/The-trade-in-preserved-Maori-heads Quote It started when Captain Cook's botanist bought a Maori teenager's head in exchange for some second-hand underpants. Joseph Banks haggled in Queen Charlotte Sound with an elderly Maori who had paddled his canoe out to the English explorer's ship, the Endeavour. The man had three heads on board, but was "very jealous of showing them," Banks wrote in his diary. He liked the price but "hesitated much to send the head up," and so Banks insisted he either sell or return the bartered goods. "I enforced my threats by [showing] him a musquet." The man handed over the head and took the price, "a pair of old drawers of very white linen." It was the summer of 1770. Yep, the trade of Maori heads from New Zealand was/is a thing - that started with the first head being traded, at musket point, for a pair of used underwear. Apparently there are people with very large collections in Britain and France.

June 9, 20223 yr Author Quote In an effort to better educate the world about the human reproductive system, the "intimate wellness brand" Intimina has introduced Period Crunch, a breakfast cereal with uterus-shaped, raspberry-flavored pieces that will color the milk red, Oddity Central reported. Alongside the startling cereal shape and red milk, the cereal box will feature a diagram of the female reproductive system so that people can learn about its location and function. The company surveyed 2,000 adults and discovered that 48% of women are embarrassed to talk about their menstrual periods and 77% have never brought it up in their households. "Periods are a natural part of who we are," said Dr. Shree Datta, a gynecologist with Intimina, "so it's deeply concerning to hear that so many people remain uncomfortable discussing them when they are just another part of our health." WTF?
June 20, 20223 yr Author A fisherman in northern Cambodia hooked what researchers say is the world’s largest freshwater fish — a giant stingray that scientists know relatively little about.
