Happy bug season. Do you guys get bit?  The good Lord blessed me with O neg blood which I read may attract bugs/mosquitoes.  I started sanding a dresser tonight around 6:45 and by 7:30 I closed up and was in the shower.  Right knee got tore up.  All I have is hand sanitizer and cortisone cream.  It helped but I’m looking for ideas.  Cheap and not chemicals. What do you use?

O negative here as well - the damn mosquitos bite through my shirt

I have a topical steroid prescribed for eczema that is great for that stuff, poison rash as well. Basic cortisone cream could help, too, though.

The wife gets eaten up most seasons. I stay unscathed, pretty much.

Last year we hired a pest service to come and spray our front and back yard every other week. Works fairly well for protection against mosquitoes, ticks, flies, etc..

Just got these from Costco for $40

  • 2 weeks later...

We have our trees and shrubs fogged every few weeks. Tiki torches around the pool also help a lot especially a night, they have new ones that have bigger flames and they seem to work better. We also have 2  devices similar to what Paco posted but not quite the same, they are twice the size but I forget the name of them. I'm not sure how much they help.

They don't come after me as much as they do my wife. I also have a buddy who comes over a lot in the summer and mosquitos look at him like a buffet, he gets hammered by them.

The more you drink the less they bother you.  Stay hammered.

HIV+ here. I make sure to bite back.

Do these keep them away, or draw them to them like a bug zapper?

As to the original question, apparently I'm fairly tasty, but I'm good at not scratching too much. The worst bites are ticks though.  Those itch relentlessly for 3 to 4 months and even my superior will power is no match for the overpowering urge to scratch it.

I can confirm this is not true.

Go online and buy Bifen XTS, mix 1 oz of it to 1 gallon of water and spray the perimeter of your home, landscaping, porches, deck, outdoor furniture, the underside of leaves of nearby trees, basically everywhere nearby where you will be congregating. That should last for a month or so before having to reapply, unless you have a lot of rain, in which case you might have to spray again in a couple weeks.

NOTE: Bifenthrin is not recommended for homeowners that have cats (or have neighbors with cats that may stray onto your property) or if there are ponds with fish nearby.

If you plan to be outside in a certain area for a while like for a party or to just relax on your deck for the night, also buy the square thermacell lanterns that burn the small blue allethrin squares. Each lantern covers an area with a radius of 10-15 ft, and takes about 15-20 min to begin providing that zone of protection.

These pyrethroids work by disrupting the smell receptors of mosquitos which is primarily how they locate hosts, not blood type.

Flies. Don't forget about the damn flies. I probably kill 2 to 4 a day in my house.

They seem to fly on in at every opportunity they get. We have a fly swatter in just about every room in the house.

I dunno, just being stupid/random as I've been outdoors a bit lately, and near water (golfing) even, and no mosquito issues yet.

Ah, gotcha.  Wasn't sure if you were joking or not given you are a cat person.
