Anyone who fell for that and didn't do the responsible thing and save deserves it. It was never intended to fund your retirement. Male life expectancy in 1935 was like 58 - most working class people died way before that. Social Security was basically intended to take care of widows - only 6% of the country was over the age of 65 back then. Now it's 16.5%. Combine that with everyone and their mother collecting SSI for things like high blood pressure, drug addiction, depression, etc. and it's no wonder why the system is about to collapse on itself.
June 17, 20223 yr With exceptions for the those truly unable to work and take care of themselves, I'd support ending Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security tomorrow. It will never happen, but the help should be targeted to those who can't provide for themselves.

You don't win elections by telling people to be responsible for their own lives. You win them by telling them that their lives are terrible because of others (rich people, immigrants, etc.) and that you'll make it right by giving them free crap stolen from others. June 17, 20223 yr If I chose to collect widows benefits I'm then limited to make additional income of like $18K. Can't live on that, so I will just keep working, paying in, and keep my employers benefits until the day comes when I can't work. I have no plans of retiring, just dying fast so that my children are not burdened with me and the God awful system that it is.

That's a right wing talking point I hadn't heard. But obviously, no, they're two completely separate bills....and neither of them are ever passing. Meanwhile, Republicans actually wrote up a budget bill that ends Medicare, Medicare and SS AND raises taxes on lower income Americans. If you were writing a bill with the expressed intention of losing every election from here on out, this is the one you'd write.
