Too many red flags were brushed off, and mental health issues are still ignored by the toxic right. "Man up” is a failed mental health remedy.

^This. It's a cultural problem above all.

The kid was failed by his parents and the system. There simply are not enough resources to follow up on all the mental woes in the community. Hindsight is 20/20. The actions of the shooter and father are criminal. FBI got reports of the kid, who passed them down to local law enforcement to check. They did. I don't know what more the FBI and local authorities can do besides looking into the future and locking them up before murder occurs.

Curious if the school did anything like check up on the kid regularly after the incident

I mispoke earlier when I said the FBI interviewed him. You're right that they got the lead but then let the local cops handle the interview and ultimately coudn't prove he was the user of the social media account that made the threats online which is why they dropped the case.

It seems that the school might've been in the dark about the whole thing. The interview was with local PD after being tipped off by the FBI, not sure if the cops even reported anything to the school at all. Thought I had read that somewhere in an article but I might've misinterpreted it.

Seems like local PD gave up, they dropped the case even though Discord provided them enough info to tie him to the accounts. They did alert the school though.

When the 13-year-old was interviewed, he "assured me that he never made any threats to shoot up any school," an officer wrote, according to the report.

The online threat included a user profile written in Russian, and investigators said at the time that the translation of the Russian letters spelled out the name Lanza, referring to Adam Lanza, who committed the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting in 2012.

"I could not substantiate the tip I received from the FBI to take further action," an officer wrote in his report. "At this time, due to the inconsistent nature of the information received by the FBI, the allegation that Colt or [his father] is the user behind the Discord account that made the threat cannot be substantiated."

"At that time, there was no probable cause for arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action on the local, state, or federal levels," the FBI said on Wednesday.

The sheriff's office said it "alerted local schools for continued monitoring of the subject."

Discord said in a statement that the account was created on April 2, 2023, and removed by the platform on May 21, 2023, "for violating our policy against extremism."

"At that time, Discord's Safety team immediately responded to law enforcement, provided all requested information to aid in their investigation, and acted swiftly to remove the user from the platform," Discord said. "Based on our ongoing investigation since then, we have no indication that the suspect used Discord to discuss or plan this horrific attack."

The school should have been told and included in whatever process since it was a school threat. The kid should have been going to the guidance counselor or something regularly after the incident

Local cops say they did inform the school. Curious to hear what actions the school took, if any. Probably wouldn't have mattered either way as we saw in the Oxford case.

Pretty sure he switched schools before this year, and the new school was in the dark. Feel like I heard that.

Yeah that might be the disconnect and would explain conflicting statements in some of the articles I've read.

Very possible it wouldn't have mattered but the documented history would have mattered

Guessing he didn't have it noted in his record and the school didn't notify the new one of the incident

"I don’t know, like I don't know anything about him saying s--- like that. I’m going to be mad as hell if he did. And then all the guns will go away. And they won’t be accessible to him. You know, I’m trying to be honest with you, I’m trying to teach him about firearms and safety, and how to do it all, getting him interested in the outdoors," Colin Gray told investigators during the same interview.

While authorities were unable to substantiate the tip, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office reportedly alerted local schools to monitor Colt Gray. An email obtained by FOX 5 shows a sheriff’s captain informing the FBI, "We have made area schools aware and will monitor this subject."

However, Colt later moved with his father to a different county, enrolling in Apalachee High School in Barrow County. It remains unclear whether the alert from Jackson County was communicated to Colt’s new school, or what "monitoring" would have entailed in this situation.

Could be, yeah.

Sounds like a product of a broken home, mom was a junkie, dad divorces her and tries to get his son into hunting and outdoorsy stuff because he was playing too many video games. He apparently took a pic of his son with a deer he shot, and had smeered the blood of the deer on his cheeks (is that a thing? my brother and brother in law both are avid hunters, but I've never heard of that.) Kid gets in trouble for making threats online, cops get involved, kid denies it, dad either believes the kid, or pretends that he cares in front of the cops only to then turn around and buy the kid an AR-15 after knowing that his son was interviewed about shooting up his school. Sad story all around, curiuos to see what other evidence they have on the dad because it might not be enough to convict from what we know so far.

Yea it's a thing lol

Seems like another all around failure by parents, police, and school districts

The main failure here is by the parents. This is why policies that encourage the most irresponsible among us to have more kids is a bad idea.

Is it a deep south thing? I don't recall ever hearing about it before, but I only fish, never been hunting.

You saw Red Dawn, right? They drank the blood.

Absolutely the parents failure is at the top. I wasn't stating that to say the blame was equal across the board. Just that each had blame

No. It's part of the hunting culture all over. Some do it and some don't

I just googled pics of it, and I gotta say, it's pretty F'ing weird. Like some cult ish straight out of that Yellow Jackets show.

Like 30 years ago, but yeah I guess I didn't think that was real. And apparently literally eating the raw heart of your first kill is a thing too.

I heard that too but wondering why they did not have a behavior plan in this kids school records?

The fact is when there was ban on guns like the AR-15 mass shootings went down. Yet somehow, Maga makes it sound like there are no other guns in the world. If we ban the AR-15 what will we do? How can we defend ourselves? The sky is falling.

It's pretty clear to me that Maga supports the murder of children and are not willing to do anything about it. Guns are more important.
