You're an embarrassment to the EMB Eh, been awhile since I've been to any of them, as I'm always looking to for the smalltime operations and the next best things these days, but from what I remember, they're not all that far apart from each other. I'd much rather go to a more independent operation like Datillo's or Stoli's, or just go completely out of my way for something next-level like Curly's. Suffice it to say that, after this, Jim's on South will never be the same. Prices will skyrocket even further, and the classic charm/vibe of the building will be lost forever. It's gonna be harder than ever to get me back there.

You're an embarrassment to the EMB Or a person with better taste than you. Most of the places with the giant mound of meat on the grill make mediocre steaks. I prefer Jim's to Pat's and Pat's to Geno's but that isn't saying much. Pat's and Geno's I recommend for the show. Jim's, I recommend for the photos.
December 6, 20223 yr My favorite places to get a Steak Sandwich are... The White House Sack O Subs John's Roast Pork Joe's Steaks Jim's Dalessandro's Steve's Prince of Steaks Tony Luke use to be on the list but not anymore.

I don't mind the slab concept in theory, and I used to be a Steve's (Bustleton) guy in my youth but from what I've heard, they've really gone downhill: As expensive as any other, but stale rolls, burnt meat, and skimpy on the meat at that. I owe them a trip, though, to at least see for myself.

Dying to try the pork, though. 22 minutes ago, jsdarkstar said: Joe's Steaks Ah, yes, Ch*nk's...a very good steak, but I don't know if I'll ever forgive them for closing down the original Torresdale location, though. That place really had some charm to it. 22 minutes ago, jsdarkstar said: Dalessandro's Another that I haven't been to in years and that used to be a local staple, but from what I've recalled and seen lately, they've fallen off, too: dry meat kibbled to smithereens, and my gf's mushroom steak looked like used canned mushrooms last time we went years ago. Regardless, just not worth standing on the street in Roxborough for 45 minutes and just hoping you might be able to find a seat at the counter once you squeeze in that capacitated shop.

They skimp on the meat, and the little square cut only makes it more noticeable. John's is good, but they use a seeded loaf with a lot of the bread torn out, and although it is delicious bread, I prefer the classic south philly steak roll. Delassandro's actually kept the quality up after being bought out. Although, have not been in 5 years since my daughter moved away from there. ****'s was a good steak. However, I have two local shops that use Conshohocken bakery rolls and use good steak, not skimping. These are still not as good as the ones we make with meat from our local butcher.

There's an ongoing debate amongst cheesesteak aficionados of whether seeded rolls fit the occasion, and I generally fall on the side of seeded rolls being appropriate for hoagies, not cheesesteaks.

I'm not a fan of them on hoagies, either, although there is nothing wrong with a Primo's, for example, they make some good sammmies. I just prefer the classic long steak/hoagie roll.

I rarely order them out, which I know is probably kinda odd. I will say though, maybe my favorite guilty pleasure meal is a wawa meatball hoagie. I know they are frozen, cheaply made and bad for you. I still think they taste amazing and eat one every couple months or so.

WaWa meatballs can't possibly be 75% beef (or pork)

December 7, 20223 yr Author Angelo's is probably the new undisputed best cheesesteak in Philly - as well as best pizza and arguably one of the best hoagies, too.
January 5, 20233 yr Jim's Steaks plans to reopen in 2023 with a second-story addition The iconic cheesesteak shop posted mock-ups of its rebuild to Twitter; it has remained closed since a fire last summer
