Posted August 30, 20223 yr Eagles release Anthony Harris and trade for Chauncey Gardner Johnson. Thoughts? https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/eagles/chauncey-gardner-johnson-trade-eagles-saints-nfl Quote Eagles get: Gardner-Johnson, Saints’ seventh-rounder in 2025 Saints get: Eagles’ 5th-rounder in 2023 and the later of their two sixth-rounders in 2024 The Eagles also released last year’s starter Anthony Harris, according to a report from ESPN. A versatile defensive back, Gardner-Johnson has played several positions but has played most as a nickel corner. The plan for him in Philly, however, will be to play as a full-time safety. While Gardner-Johnson has been versatile in his career, the most time he’s spent at safety came in 2019, when he played 102 snaps in the box and 69 at free safety, according to ProFootballFocus. The bulk of his NFL snaps have been in the slot. It's important to note that nickel cornerback Avonte Maddox also offers versatility. It'll be fascinating to see how defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon plays this. Earlier in training camp, Gannon was asked about Josiah Scott's moving from nickel to safety and said this about the positions: "The nickel position is a mirrored position with the safety in some things." Either way, these moves represent a clear upgrade at the Eagles’ biggest position of need entering the 2022 season. Gardner-Johnson is still just 24 and won’t turn 25 until December. The 2019 fourth-round pick from Florida has been in the NFL for three seasons. He has 43 games and 31 starts under his belt. Last season, he played in 12 games with 11 starts and had 3 interceptions, 7 pass breakups, 2 sacks and 46 tackles. He also has an aggressive streak and can at times be an instigator. Eagles fans will probably really enjoy having Gardner-Johnson on the team. As Gardner-Johnson enters the final year of his rookie contract, he has a base salary of $2.54 million in 2022. If he performs well, there’s a chance the Eagles could sign him to an extension during the season.
August 30, 20223 yr Keep in mind we have the saints #1 pick, so you could consider anything we trade for him an investment in improving that asset

I don’t think you want that type of headache at wide receiver or quarterback, but I think you can get away with that at safety. Also this roster is close knit, stacked with veterans, and a now established coach. The Saints were in transition, cap strapped, and no one really knows their direction. My guess is once he gets here, he gets his money and everything will be good.
August 30, 20223 yr He was on my wish list in the 2019 draft, especially when he fell to day 3. Unfortunately we didn't have much in the way of picks that year (ended up with Shareef Miller a few picks later). This is a great move. But it could turn out to be a 1 year rental if we are unable to extend him (i.e. if he wants a king's ransom).
August 30, 20223 yr Didn't he want a new contract? We pretty much gave up nothing. I'm guessing his agent already knows the offer... 6 minutes ago, EazyEaglez said: Man Howie owned them on this trade.
August 30, 20223 yr Author This defense overall (on paper) should be much improved. It will be interesting to see what our offense does if this defense can provide them with some short fields instead of the long drives and 80-90% completion percentages last season. 1 minute ago, time2rock said: He was on my wish list in the 2019 draft, especially when he fell to day 3.
