Since we are past the roster cut down date, it only makes sense to IR him … he can be brought back as early as week 5.  Use that roster spot for someone who will be able to contribute … preferably a returner.

Broken arm should be maybe 6-8 weeks out.  And once you recover, you're fully recovered (as opposed to ligaments or achilles or lots of other soft tissue injuries, whose effects will linger much longer).

How in the world did he even break it?

It is being classified as a "non-displaced fracture" which means it is indeed broken but stays in alignment (usually no surgery required).  Have to figure he'll likely miss a month ... guessing they'll say a 4-6 week recovery timetable ... so they should IR him.  He'd be eligible to return as soon as week 5.

Returner is a bit of a hole but Dillard was the main back up tackle so who's covering if Mailata or Johnson have to miss snaps?  I thought Driscoll played most of his snaps at Guard last year, I'm not sure Seumalo has ever played tackle? I don't see how they bring in anyone but a Tackle for a few weeks.

Seumalo has indeed played OT on a few occasions.  Driscoll obviously has played RT when Lane was out previously.  Sills also have experience playing LT (although he is quite raw ... but in a pinch ... ).  They also have the ability to call players up from the practice squad as needed (without adding them to the 53) ... guessing they'll bring up Clark - not that he looked great there during the pre season but at least he has experience.

Calm down - Mailata isn't going to get injured.

Contrary to what was first reported, surgery is indeed undergoing surgery (today).

As speculated above, the timetable for recovery is 4-6 weeks (no, I am not a doctor ... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night :P ).

So it makes sense to place him on IR to free up a spot.  As mentioned previously, he'd be eligible to return any time after week 4.

Report: Andre Dillard to undergo surgery for broken forearm on Tuesday

Posted by Myles Simmons on September 5, 2022, 3:18 PM EDT

Eagles backup left tackle Andre Dillard will soon be on the mend.

After fracturing his forearm in practice last week, Dillard will undergo surgery to repair it on Tuesday with the procedure aimed at stability, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Dillard’s recovery timetable is still four-to-six weeks, which means he should be available for the majority of the regular season.

The 22nd overall pick of the 2019 draft, Dillard is entering the final season of his rookie contract. The Eagles declined his fifth-year option in the spring. Dillard has appeared in 31 games with nine starts over the last three seasons.

He missed the 2020 season with a torn biceps suffered during training camp.

Philadelphia also has undrafted rookie Josh Sills on the 53-man roster and Le'Raven Clark on the practice squad, with Clark a likely replacement. Clark has played 51 games with 16 starts in his career, including one start for the Eagles last season.

Add him to the list of many 1st round busts

I disagree.  It was Dillard's misfortune for the Eagles to have drafted a freak of nature like Jordan Mailata.  Dillard is capable of being a good starting LT in the NFL, and there are not many people who can say that.

I liked the Dillard draft pick.  I criticized it at the time because I didn’t want a first round hedge on Mailata.  But I always felt someone with Dillard‘s specs and obvious fluidity in pass coverage was easily a good first round pick in the 20’s.

That said…I have to disagree.  I think he’s a certified bust and would not be a good starting LT at this point.    He’s spent far more time embarrassing himself at RT and injuring himself at LT than he has looking like a respectable starter at LT.
