I know some are a bit disappointed. But nothing a returner can do when the blocking sucks. At least he doesn't go backwards. I really hated Smith fielding that 1 punt. Held my breath so he wouldn't take a bad hit

I honestly never worry about people returning punts. I don't understand the dramatics. I always thought it was stupid to have Mahe returning punts averaging 7.5 yards when we had Westbrook averaging over 12 yards per return. Do the math. That's one less carry needed by Westbrook to go the distance and score. If he takes it to the house, he most likely avoided any hard hits, and gave the offense more rest and at the same time needing less touches from him on what would have been that offensive possession. Punt returners always have the option to fair catch or not even field the punt. People act like returners are always getting hurt. WRs get hurt playing WR much more often than punt returners get hurt returning punts.

Exactly.  All I ever see is poor blocking in front of him.

Wouldn't matter if we had Hester back there.

I know he fumbled one last week but I do think he's a solid option back there. For the most part you know he's going to make the right decision and catch the ball. And as others have said the blocking has been woeful.

I would like to see him play some hybrid slot/HB role like a wing back. I think he would do well in Jet motion sweeps like how they gave Zach Pacal that end around on the 4th down play. Having him line up in the backfield and giving him running back screens to set up in the open field behind Mailata and Dickerson. Allowing those huge size bodies in front of him would hide him and it would make him hard to find.

As a slot receiver he has natural instincts to get open in zones. He is sure handed so he could give a different look than what AJ and Watkins show. He has talent and GM could very well help the team on offense.

If they wanted to continue to use him as their primary returner, they didn't have a choice other than to sign him to the 53.  They had already called him up the previous 3 weeks ... the max they are able to call a player up on game day and then move him back down to the practice squad without subjecting him to waivers is 3.  So it was either find someone else to serve as returner or add him to the 53.

That assumes he'd be claimed off waivers. He's had no opportunity to do anything except return punts that I recall so I'm not sure how attractive he'd be to another team. He'd have to go on the new team's 53 I think.

Signed to the 53 man roster in week 4, meaning his salary is guaranteed and he’s the Eagles primary return man going forward.  Hopefully he gets that parking pass now.

Where are you getting that his salary is guaranteed?  That is only if a player is on the 53 man roster heading into the season.

Our expectations for returner have been lowered since Reno Mahe.

Receivers also play a ton more snaps.

It’s the Greg Lewis effect.

Oh for sure for sure. Our starting field position is going to hurt us in a game at some point.

You're correct.  My mistake. I thought it was guaranteed for cap purposes but only $137,500 is guaranteed - his signing bonus.

He terrifies me everytime he touches the ball. I think I'm being irrational, but my fear is all too real.

Not too worried about that either. Same reasoning. If you get better field position, your offense may be able to produce with one less snap. If your best return man happens to be a starting WR or RB and the actual return specialist is clearly inferior, you do the team a disservice to play the inferior player. If you had the best return specialist in the history of the NFL, would you be afraid to have him return punts because injury concerns make you nervous? It just doesn't make sense.

Kickoffs and punt coverage has not been good that’s for sure. Let’s hope it gets better.

I guess Vince Papale wasn't available?
