Because you want a first round pick sitting behind the starter for 2 full years? It seems like a waste of resources. First round picks are expected to start. If you want to use a first round pick on a Lane replace, perhaps you could draft that player after Lane retires? You could use a later round pick on a raw, freakbeast athlete, a Mailata type, and train him for 2 years, so that he's ready to go when Lane retires. It just seems wasteful to spend a 1st on a player who would be doing nothing for 2 years. I like the idea of using the freakbeasts with versatility on the resume not at OL, when there are already good players in the starting OL. Cam Jurgens. But we're not really seeing a whole lot of Cam Jurgens out there. Not saying he was a first rounder. I would think that the Eagles have positions that could be filled by drafted players.

At the rate our OL go down, they'd probably have the opportunity/need to start about 20 games between next year and the time Lane retires.

I'm somewhere in between your line of thinking and eagle45. I'd probably plan to draft Lane's replacement in April, 2024 (not this upcoming draft and not after Lane retires) and use our higher 1st rd pick this upcoming draft on an edge rusher. But it really depends on who is available and how highly ranked they are (i.e. I'm not passing on what many would consider a generational talent at OT to take a lesser DE and vice versa). Both positions are legit needs.
November 12, 20222 yr If we go ot in round 1, that player could be the rg for two years and then move to tackle, so it would save some money on not having to re-sign Seumalo and also not leave a high draft pick on the bench, a la Jurgens. But I wouldn't pass on a top defensive prospect to draft a potential Lane replacement this year, as our defense desperately needs young talent.

I don't really like the idea of pushing such great players out the door just because we care so much about those positions. I do agree that drafting the better player is the better strategy, instead of drafting for need. The Eagles are undefeated and it's not clear to me at least where the need really is. I'd like the Eagles to overspend (some people don't like taking a RB in the first) on a great running back who is both big and fast. If one appears. Siri would probably like a Taylor like back, 220+ and sub 4.4. Some year, whether it's 2013 or 2014. Braelon Allen, 6'2 238, RB Wisconsin? Point is that I don't really see a lot of needs.
November 13, 20222 yr The one thing that has me nervous about drafting Lane’s replacement in the 1st is we currently have 8 defensive players, and pretty much all of them starters, set to hit free agency. Between Epps, CGJ, White, Edwards, Cox, Graham, Hargrave, Bradberry. Then you have Seumalo also, and some depth offensive guys. Obviously you can’t re-sign them all, but that starts the next argument of who must be re-signed? Hargrave & Bradberry are impact starters, I’d say Seumalo also, but all of them are approaching 30 so I’d be weary to give them big paydays. If we lose a good portion of our defensive guys, I’d be less interested in looking for Lane’s replacement in the first round. Unless yes of course if there’s a talent too good to pass up. But Eagles really need an infusion of young defensive talent. I’d look more at day 2 for his replacement.
November 13, 20222 yr His replacement doesn't need to be drafted this year but, if they do I think they should take one later in the draft. Almost 3 years away they can definitely develop someone in that time frame

If I had to prioritize 3 of those 9 I'd likely try to keep Bradberry, CJGJ, and Epps to keep the secondary intact - that really is a special unit. After that then I'd probably go Edwards. Dean hopefully will be ready to take over White's spot and I think you can probably play Jurgens at RG IF Kelce does not decide to hang em up after this season.

Driscoll is the idea I had for RG if Seumalo walks
November 14, 20222 yr Well at least he’s tossing that out there now so we can groom a new replacement.
