Did the Giants owners fear a takeover of MetLife by Eagles fans (if PHI-NYG had been flexed to SNF in Week 14)?

Eagles-Giants in Week 14 looked to be a lock to be flexed into Sunday Night Football:

It appeared FOX even though it did not protect Eagles-Giants to be moved to Week 14 SNF because it would have left FOX with only two 1:00 PM ET games.  Chiefs-Broncos, the scheduled Sunday night game is staying even though the Broncos are pretty much mailing it in at this point and the Chiefs figure to win that game easily.

This makes me wonder if the Mara and Tisch families that own the Giants also lobbied the NFL to keep Eagles-Giants at 1:00 PM Sunday?  Giants season ticket holders are notorious for hating to go to night games and often give away those tickets for even when games are at 4:25.  I'm suspecting here the Giants owners feared such season ticket holders would give their tickets to Eagles fans en masse, resulting in an Eagles takeover of MetLife Stadium to where it became a home-away-from-home game for the Eagles with it almost all Eagles fans in attendance (similar to what happened in 2019 at FedEx Field when it was mostly Eagles fans then).

Either way, thank you Mara, and/or thank you NFL for not moving us.

Feel free to light the tree at Rockafeller Center that day if you like.

I'm going 🙂

Don't think it will stop Eagles fans from going regardless.

It won't.  What is does do is prevent Giants fans who hate going to night games from selling their tickets to Eagles fans who will make the two-hour drive to The Meadowlands.  THAT is what I think the Maras were afraid of.

Didn’t you tell us recently that the Eagles-Packers game was sure to be moved from SNF and that the Eagles-Titans game would be switched to SNF?

Almost nothing of what you ever say happens, and all your speculations about what you think is happening behind the scenes is nonsensical.

Excellent choice.  But the reason isn't that the Giants ownership was worried about an Eagles "takeover" because Giants fans don't like to go out at night (huh, Wally?).  It's because the Dolphins and Tua have been under-exposed nationally this season, and there's a lot of interest in seeing them.  The NFL is motivated by one thing only: money and ratings (that's two things, but they're connected).

That's the charm of Wally posts!

From what I read elsewhere, it went very late because NBC wanted Eagles-Giants.  I think FOX, though they didn't protect it along with the Giants owners all lobbied for reasons noted to keep it a 1:00 PM ET game.  It's well-documented about Giants season ticket holders not wanting to go to night games as many of them are older, and BTW was why the Jets actually played the last game in the old Giants Stadium because the Giants owners feared a flex to SNF the last week of the 2009 season (it's well known those other than season ticket holders attend night games for the Giants).  I think the Maras and Tiches feared MetLife Stadium being 90%+ Eagles fans for Eagles-Giants if it became a night game, turning it into essentially a home game for the Eagles.

Dolphins-Chargers was originally the favorite to be flexed to SNF because it was in 4:05 PM ET purgatory on CBS until it was discovered Eagles-Giants was NOT protected AND the Chargers were flexed into Week 11 against the Chiefs, maxing out the Chargers who have a Monday 12/26 game in Indy against the Colts AND HAD a New Years Night game against the Rams that now MUST BE FLEXED OUT OF SNF in Week 17 already scheduled.  This was likely the game originally intended to be flexed until Eagles-Giants became much bigger and NBC wanted that game instead.  On that front it made sense to flex in Dolphins-Chargers.

I suspect Fox's concern that it might lose both Eagles vs Giants games (the Week 18 game could end up being moved to Saturday or Sunday night, more likely the former) this season had a bit more to do with the decision.

I'm just glad we didn't get flexed to the night game.  I always stay up for the Eagles' night games but trying to go to sleep right after it's over, while still amped up, and having to get up 4 hours later for work really sucks

The Gnats are having a decent season so far and are on pace to make the playoffs. So Gnat fans are likely more into it this season making a 'takeover' a little more difficult.

You would think that, but there have many times over the years when Giants season ticket holders, even when the Giants were good who complained about games at Giants Stadium/Met Life that were moved to 4:25/8:20 and refused to go to such games, often giving those tickets to others.  I think the Maras in particular really feared Eagles fans buying up almost all of the tickets from Giants season ticket holders and it being at least 80% Eagles fans for a Sunday nighter.

lol

They kept it at 1PM because I called and made sure they did.  They don't mess with my sleep schedule.

I appreciate it....don't feel like getting home at 1am leaving the swamp!   This way, can leave the house around 11....get there, curb stomp the Giants and be home by 6'ish.

I love my eagles but I'm not driving to the wasteland that is North Jersey. Although I wish it had been flexed. I'll be driving to West Virginia next Sunday afternoon.

Got my hopes up that this was flexed...I can't watch at 1pm sonic was hoping for a flex

Might be hard to get a full takeover now anyways, because that team is playing solid football this year.

@Wallyhorse

Is there a chance the week 16 game against the cowboys gets flexed to the night game? Can they flex Saturday games?

In most cases, that would be true, but even when the Giants have been good in the past, their season ticket holders have loudly complained about games that start at 4:05/4:25 or primetime.  Many of them are older and have made clear they won't go to night games, and when the Giants do have primetime games very few season ticket holders are actually there are it's usually those who otherwise never get to go to Giants games who go to night games.  In this case, I think if Giants season ticket holders sold their tickets, Eagles fans would have bought up most of them and it would have been 70,000+ Eagles fans at Met Life which is likely what the Maras feared.

Can't.  LV-PIT is in that slot because it's the 50th anniversary of The Immaculate Reception.  Also, it's Christmas Eve night and it would have been very difficult to flex a game to that slot anyway.

I was looking at the price of those tickets earlier in the season and they were pricey then. My guess is they’re pretty hard to get now.

So off to the Meadowlands....hoping to see a ton of Eagles fans.....tailgating with my brother in law and his group of Giants fans, hopefully will be able to go warm up if allowed in the Manning suite.  Yes....my brother in laws wife is Eli's personal assistant.  She is a little over protective with him, at the wedding, he sat at the table right next to us.  The whole wedding was informed...DO NOT TALK TO HIM, LEAVE HIM ALONE.  So, cue the wedding....Eli says to her, why is no one talking to me, I feel like a lepper!  She was like, good!  They did what I told them to do......I thought he was a pretty funny dude from commercials and would have liked like real conversation.  I did try and bribe the DJ to play the Eagles fight song with no success!
