REPORT: EAGLES WILL MAKE CHANGES TO SPECIAL TEAMS UNIT IN WEEK 13 MATCHUP AGAINST TITANS

December 3, 2022

Eagles special teams coordinator Michael Clay

Well, it’s about damn time.

After another atrocious outing from the Eagles special teams unit Sunday night against Green Bay, reports have surfaced that the team will install changes to the group in Week 13. Per JAKIB Sports’ John McMullen, Philadelphia’s special teams unit will look a bit different on Sunday, with "frontline guys” set to be on the unit.

This report comes after head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters that everything was on the table in regards to shoring up the team’s special teams group.

As it stands, Philadelphia has one of the worst special teams units in the entire NFL. They rank 30th in kickoff return average (18.3 YPR) and 28th in punt return average (6.9 YPR). Pro Football Focus grades the Eagles special teams out at 53.9, by far the worst mark of any team in football.

Special teams coordinator Michael Clay has been under heavy scrutiny all season. Britain Covey has remained the starting punt returner all season, despite averaging just 6.8 yards per return. And above all else, the tackling has been terrible nearly every week.

The offensive/defensive starters shouldn’t have to lend a helping hand here, but if that’s what it takes to button up the special teams unit, then so be it. We’ll see if it actually makes a major difference on Sunday.

Not sure what was changed, but blocking was certainly better. Not sure if that was us or Tenn wasn't good. I'll wait 3 weeks before making a conclusion. But it definitely was better today.

It was better but it still wasn't great. Although that Stoll hit on a Tenn return was huge!
