December 7, 20222 yr The real issue for me on these type of questions is who would you have rather they picked. Here are the next 10 draft picks after Jordan Davis: 1 14 Baltimore Ravens Kyle Hamilton S Notre Dame Ind. (FBS) 1 15 Houston Texans Kenyon Green OG Texas A&M SEC from Miami via Philadelphia[R1 - 7] 1 16 Washington Commanders Jahan Dotson WR Penn State Big Ten from Indianapolis via Philadelphia and New Orleans[R1 - 8] 1 17 Los Angeles Chargers Zion Johnson OG Boston College ACC 1 18 Tennessee Titans Treylon Burks WR Arkansas SEC from New Orleans via Philadelphia[R1 - 9] 1 19 New Orleans Saints Trevor Penning OT Northern Iowa MVFC from Philadelphia[R1 - 10] 1 20 Pittsburgh Steelers Kenny Pickett QB Pittsburgh ACC 2021 Johnny Unitas Award and Senior CLASS Award winner 1 21 Kansas City Chiefs Trent McDuffie CB Washington Pac-12 from New England[R1 - 11] 1 22 Green Bay Packers Quay Walker LB Georgia SEC from Las Vegas[R1 - 12] 1 23 Buffalo Bills Kaiir Elam CB Florida SEC from Arizona via Baltimore[R1 - 13] Those are the talents the rest of the NFL saw as the alternatives to Jordan Davis - anyone picked lower than that would have to be considered a reach if picked at 13. So ... who would you rather have of that bunch?

December 7, 20222 yr The only player I would've been okay with in place of JD would've been Hamilton but that was remedied by the fact that we signed CGJ. Worked out well for us.
December 7, 20222 yr It’s way too soon to really say, but potentially almost every pick the Eagles made this past draft looks like a good pickup. They say it usually takes three seasons to really know for sure, but just on Davis alone if he can maintain his weight with that size and speed he’s going to be a monster in the middle for years to come. Finally I will state that any pick is worth it no matter the outcome if that player in the draft helped the team win the Super Bowl.

So ... who would you rather have of that bunch? Back in the summer a lot of these guys would have said Pickett but I think the Eagles made the right choice here. DT was absolutely a need and rarely do you get a guy with that much size, strength, and speed all wrapped up in one package. Personally I think it’s way too early to even be asking these types of questions.

Jurgens seems good but it seems we do draft a lot of players than don't play first or second year. As for Davis the jury is out but it has potential to be a huge pick. Wish Nakobe played more but I think next year he gets his chance and I expect that to be a solid addition.
December 8, 20222 yr All you need to see is how much the run defense dropped off while he was on IR. If Davis doesn't get injured, the Eagles are undefeated.
December 8, 20222 yr I really liked Dexter Lawrence coming out, thought he would have been a good eagles pick, many in here said he's no more than a run stuffer. Fir his first couple seasons he was meh, this year he has 6 sacks so far and has played really well. I think Davis is a good comparison, I think once he puts it together he has the athletic ability to be more than just a 2 down run stuffer. The high ankle sprain was a set back and hopefully not a reoccurring thing. He has the opportunity this year to not be thrust into a huge role and soak up a lot from some really good vets in cox Suh linval and Hargrave. I expect he'll make a big leap next year.

And it’s not just that the lines are what makes a team and building from the inside out and that’s our identity. It’s just hard to find linemen to trade for or in FA. That matters if the goal is to someday have a complete team. Way easier to pay a FA safety than finding a young top tier DT.
December 8, 20222 yr In all seriousness, the Davis pick was never about the 2022 team or even the 2023 team. It was about the 2024, 2025, and 2026 teams. And then hopefully beyond that for his next contract. In case you haven't noticed, our current defensive line is really, really old. It was critical to get a new piece into the mix as a future cornerstone.

Jurgens is protection from a drop off in talent.
December 8, 20222 yr Davis was a no brainer pick — he will make multiple pro bowls and all pro teams, and has a chance to even be something more than that. Too early? Maybe. But he’s already one of the best run defenders in the NFL and athletically he hasn’t even begun to unlock his true potential. If he gets his conditioning right and works on his game I think he can be the best run defender in the entire NFL while also giving us 8+ sacks a season. Dude is the definition of a freakish athlete.

December 8, 20222 yr He’s green! We were doing fine with him in the rotation until he went out then we started giving away large gains at the LOS. I think he’ll be a decent run stuffer. Hell get some pass rush sacks but even if he doesn’t he’ll account consistently by taking up 2 o line man for the others to do their work.
December 8, 20222 yr Yes, Davis was the perfect pick. Floor is really good run defender, ceiling is one of the most dominant DTs we've ever seen. Plus there was a significant dropoff after Hamilton.

As stated before, just look what happened to the run defense after he got injured.
