"took every precaution necessary"

I understand that's from April, but if that's how he was behaving during the quarantine at the height of the virus hysteria, can't imagine how his behavior has changed over the past few weeks whenever he got it.

A nice breakdown of Pryor by Tra Thomas, who knows what he's talking about.

bummer

Is that just the guaranteed money? I didn't think contracts were guaranteed in the NFL past that, so if he retired they don't have to pay him, so why would it still be on the cap?

So these are the new rehab people?

I would think so - new team docs and staff.  That all sounded like an immediate  change when it happened.  Derek Gunn seemed to indicate that it was done in the presence and guidance of staff that were running these drills.

Doubtful. Guessing Pryor will get first opportunity to start. He's done pretty well filling in at guard.

they were in a bind anyway cause they want to bring JP back, this gives them a reason.

Not really.  Howie needs every cent of space he can get given the 50 million over he is in 2021.  Either way this would be an additional 8 million more he needs to find.

There's no question about him having a lot of work to do going forward. I just feel at peace knowing that Roseman is the one structuring things. Howie's involvement makes me believe that this team will never have a cap violation, and most likely won't have a massive roster purge to get in compliance like the Ravens did years ago.

Not to derail this thread considering I've been vocal about Howie time and time again.  But there is nothing about how Howie manages the cap that makes me believe we will avoid a roster purge (or be in a purgatory of perpetual mediorcity) at some point.  Howie consistently borrows against the future to scramble to get under today.  Just because he knows basic techniques to get us under each year doesn't make him a good cap manager.

Its like saying someone is good at managing their money because each year they sign up for a new credit card and transfer all of their other CC outstanding balances to that new one for the promotion period.  Yeah, they managed to avoid the hit for that year, but eventually you are going to run out of new CC's you can sign up for and have to pay for your overspending.

Honest question: Have you looked at Hargrave's contract summary?  Do you know why we have a dead cap hit of 2.5 million on Darby despite him being a FA?  How the team is structured cap wise this year and next to see what moves can\will be made?  If you have, I'm curious what you see there that makes you believe it is structured well.

Howie is not the first GM to try to employ cap structures like this to win now and there have always been one of two outcomes:  1) Massive Purge\Tough cuts and rebuild 2) Perpetual mediocrity (but no purge) because you are behind other teams in actual cash available.

Draft picks are cheap, so good thing he drafts well.

It might seem easy to suggest the new heads of conditioning and medical staff didn't work out because of this injury.  But a couple things:

  • Brooks already has injury history, so do others.
  • Every team has injuries, you can't expect zero injuries or any injury to be blamed on the staff
  • They are brand new and need time to implement their methods
  • COVID quarantine impacts every team and maybe they're not able to implement everything in an ideal way yet
  • The new staff came from teams among the healthiest, they won awards for their performance
  • Injuries will happen no matter how good the staff are, but let's see in the long run if injuries and recovery improve

I understand what he is doing and the risks associated with doing it. Of course he's in "win now" mode so spending is near the limit with some expenditures being pushed forward. I also understand that better drafts equal less pressure to add FA's to correct for mistakes. Their draft performance must sustainably improve.

Better drafts equal more cap space. I don't think Brooks is going anywhere though. He'll be back, unlike Desean, Jeffrey, Gooodwin, and maybe Barnett.

I hope he is back too, but two ruptured achillies at his age isn't a good sign that, even if he is back, he will be playing at the level his contract dictates.  And he is just another example of an extension given to an older player to create cap room now.  This is what I mean about bad cap management.

As for your other point:

Goodwin supposedly restructured to a 1 year contract.  So he currently slated to be a FA.   Without the details, lets say, aggressively, that's 10 million.

Lets say Alshon is cut and for simplicity sake, assume all cuts are pre June 1st.  That's 10.5 million in dead cap to "save" 8 million.

Cut Desean, and that's 5.8 million in dead cap for a 5.1 million savings.

Barnett would be no dead money and 10 million in savings.  But cutting him means you are rooting for your young home grown edge rusher to fail.

So the good news is, the 35.6 million plus the currently 24.7 million roll over gets you under the 50.6 million project cap overage.  And this is assuming they do not sign anyone between now and end of season to fill in holes left by injury.

The bad news?

You have little to no money for FA's

You have little to no money for draft picks

You have to replace your first round edge rusher some how

You have to replace 3 WRs, two who are projected to be starters.   Reagor, JJ, and a bunch of 5th rounders to undrafted FA's don't inspire confidence

Those few moves to get you just under cost you 16 million in dead cap space that you could have used to address the holes above

Oh, and the cap could potentially go down given the COVID 19 situation.

Give this, are you still comfortable with the risks he has taken and what he has been doing?

Howie is aggressive with cap maneuvering, but is a poor cap manager.

He WAS in "win now mode" which he admitted this past offseason.  He admitted they were signing temp free agents and ok with trading draft picks for players to try and keep the 2017 team competitive.  When injuries and age caught up to them, he now realized they need to get younger.  He's not talking win now mode, he's talking building a team for the next several years.

Of course we all know that a good GM should be building constantly through the draft.  They have done that with some positions as well, example Goedert when he wasn't needed, JJAW to replace Alshon, Dillard to replace JP, etc.  But it should always be draft first and supplement with smart FA and trade moves and he's got a little too much into the latter.

paco,

If they don't consistently improve in the draft, they're probably not winning it all again for a very long time. That's a big part of what that 57 year drought was about.

I've been beating the "I'm not satisfied with the draft" drum for decades. IMO, it all hinges on and grows from there. Draft very well year in and year out and the pressure to sign FA's isn't strong, so there's more cap space for re-signing your own guys and/or there's confidence to replace them through a later draft. They miss so much now, that a disproportionate amount of the cap has to go to patching those holes with FA's. Fix that and everything improves.

Barnett has been an above average DE overall but not a consistent game changer and I view him as a lesser version of BG. To me, he's performing like a 3rd-4th round DE is expected to perform. If he goes, it's not like we're letting Reggie go again. I suspect they'll have to upgrade over him anyway, unless they're going to compromise on talent and performance at the position. I'm not rooting against him. I'm just not waiting for him to explode into a perennial pro bowler. At this point, I'd be happy but shocked if that happened.

Howie's ability to manage the cap is directly related to the team's draft performance. His ability to remain flexible in his maneuvering is a plus, IMO. Who thought he'd get through all of the moves he needed to in order to get Wentz?

I'm just *NOT* worried paco. A year will come where they may have to  let go a couple more than I want, but that's different from releasing 14 starters to squeak under the cap.

15 of 17 and 16 of the top 20 players are in the red if cut.  And honestly,  when we see what Goodwin's restructure is, it's more likely going to be 16 of 17 and 17 of 20 because they most likely lowered his cap hit for guaranteed money.

Nah... Novacare has been around too long. This is a more recent issue. Seems to be ever since they drafted Wentz! 😉

He's had this injury before and bounced back just fine. He will just turned 31 in August . Peter's tore his Achilles twice and came back fine and he was older and at a position that requires even more movement

I hope you right and Brooks does recover...But Peters was never the same after the injuries. It is time to address Offensive line with more youth movement.

The injury appeared to be a non-contact one.  With his age and injury history, this may be a signal that his playing career is approaching the end.  It would be wise to take a long look at the young players on the roster and get them ready to step up.  Signing high-priced FA may look good and exciting to the fan base, but that is no long-term fix.  That will also tie up a large sum of cap money on the G position.  Howie has been saying to go young and has been selective on FA signings this off season.  Young movement is good.

Among the list of expected  2021 losses is about 30 Mil in savings at 1st pass with the players I mentioned before. There are others who could go as well in 2021.

I agree with you that he can't kick the can down the road much more and if he does, then it'll fall apart. He's kind of up against it now, but there's loopholes in the cap rules that allow for making some room and he'll use them all. That's what I meant about flexibility. Hasn't he exploited salary conversions to gain room in the past without consequences? Why not again? That's just 1 thing and we know he will do 5-10 things if he must.

IMO, the Eagles just have to start drafting very well and the impact of the cap issues is reduced.

If they are the right guys, you keep them. The team apparently thinks these are the right guys for 2020.

I feel like we’ve been saying the same thing for years.
