I thought it was you take all the dead money hit in one year, but you can go to arbitration to try and get back unplayed years of prorated bonuses and whatnot so lessen the cap hit?

Yeah, that's the "Barry Sanders Rule".  I didn't want to complicate things.

 

It's also happened in the past with disgruntled players who want out but teams can't cut them for salary cap reasons.  In 2006 Lavar Arrington gave back 4 million to the R-words to get his release.
