January 10, 20232 yr I expect at least one if not both coordinators to be gone. Not sure what the plan is on defense, but it’s a pretty good bet Brian Johnson takes over the offense if/when Steichen is poached.
January 10, 20232 yr Someone please hire Gannon. You’re gonna love him. Top notch coach and leader of men!
January 10, 20232 yr Could be an interesting offseason for the coaching staff. I'm not exactly sure how I will feel about losing either or both coordinators. I can make an argument to keep or get rid of either of them.

Wouldn't mind Brian Johnson, but I also wouldn't be surprised if Reich had something to gain. Yes Gannons D has been great, but I don't think it's bc of him. Unless he shows me different looks in the playoffs, I don't trust him or his scheme at all. With that said, I hope he get a HC offer next year.

The fact is he is the coordinator of a defense that finished the season 8th in points and 2nd in yards. As far as Johnson/Reich, you have to also consider how important Johnson has been to Jalen’s development. Even this past offseason there were some rumors that Johnson could be on other teams’ radar as a potential OC. Can only imagine he looks like an even more enticing candidate after the season Hurts has had. So in the end, if they don’t promote Johnson they could end up losing him. And who knows if/how that could impact Hurts further development.

The fact is he is the coordinator of a defense that finished the season 8th in points and 2nd in yards. It's his philosophy that people hate. Teams don't fear playing against our defense and they really don't have to prepare for a lot of creativity. Despite having high rankings in overall defense, we were terrible against the run, allowing 4.6 ypc. We have the personnel to be a dominating defense, but chose to always be conservative over aggressive. The big difference between the 49ers defense and ours is how aggressive they play and how opposing offenses have to prepare and account for that. While we can attribute our record to mainly our offense, the 49ers' record is mostly because of their defense. Nobody worries about facing a good, conservative defense, but if you have a good, aggressive defense, you start getting into opponents' heads and force mistakes that way. Stop worrying about how not to lose a game and have the mindset that you are going to go out there and take the game. I don't hate Gannon. I just think don't think he's getting the most out of this group as a whole.
January 10, 20232 yr Just like Barry Switzer was the HC of a team that won a Super Bowl, most people acknowledge that it was a well built team that he just simply didn’t screw up. Similar here. The defense has a good collection of talent that simply outplayed Gannon’s conservative coaching style much more often than not.
January 10, 20232 yr Steichen is as good as gone. People see Herbert and Hurts and will be falling all over themselves to get that kind of development. Only hope for the Eagles would be they go to the SB and other teams get impatient. It's probably Houston or bust for Gannon. But who knows?

The times they looked vurnable is when Gannon had players out position or got too conservative and failing to adjust. I'm still wondering how he's yet again a top candidate.
January 10, 20232 yr Gannon's Defense for 2 seasons has been abysmal against good to great quarterbacks. Something is wrong with his approach. Dak Prescott has played like garbage for 2 months with the exception of the Eagles game where he lit up our D like a Christmas Tree on Christmas Eve.
January 10, 20232 yr I wonder if team think these guys are ready or if they just consider them names for the lists. I’ll state all these people so excited to get rid of Gannon might wasn’t to reconsider. Eagles last four defensive coordinators: Jaun Castillo Bill Davis Jim Schwartz Jonathan Gannon Tell me what makes anyone think the next guy will be better?
January 10, 20232 yr I just hope Hurts doesn't decline when the QB coach gets promoted to the OC position and they get a new QB coach

The worst scenario would be if Steichen gets a HC job, and Johnson gets poached by another team for their OC position. Then Hurts loses both of them. That’s why I’ve been saying they need to just promote Johnson and not even think about bringing in an outside hire in that scenario.

The Eagles have way too many players on the other side of 30 playing key roles for this team. They need an influx of talent.

My big concern is Howie hasn’t shown a knack for drafting good defensive talent. I’ll give pause on Davis and Dean as it’s too early to write the book on them, but Howie’s track record isn’t good.
January 10, 20232 yr Wasn't Lovie Smith a defensive HC? So if they hire Gannon I'm not sure they have really learned a whole lot.

Doesn’t he get paid if he doesn’t coach next season? Why make less just to be a DC? I think the Eagles would have to make him like assistant HC with good pay to make it worth his time.

I think Reich is the same way which is also why I don’t think he comes here.
January 11, 20232 yr I would love for them "keep the band together". But also know that doing well for a season gives you opportunities to take next level jumps...Hopefully they can keep the core players/coaches together for another 2-4 years

I know the defensive stats are really good but is that more a product of the quality of players we have on the field and not the coaching??). It's going to be a challenge for sure: Howie is going to have to be extra masterful with the cap due to entering the new league year with (1) minimal cap space currently - OTC projects $14.4M currently (although that seems to be the story every year recently and it never precluded us from making major moves), (2) the need to sign Hurts to a market contract which is going to take up a significant % of the overall cap space, and (3) a ton of key players scheduled to hit free agency in 6 weeks to try to get locked up or replaced. And as you said, the coordinators from those teams with the best records always seem to get poached in the next hiring cycle. If I had to choose to lose one, I hope it is Gannon.

I think UK is saying why would the Texans hire another defensive coordinator to be their head coach like Gannon.
