March 3, 20232 yr Author Quote Sirianni and Roseman are obviously big believers in Fangio’s scheme – they brought him in before the Super Bowl to serve as a consultant – and in Desai they have someone who is a clear Fangio disciple. That means a 3-4 base, lots of zone coverage, two-high safety shell, coverages geared to prevent big plays, producing sacks without blitzing. Sound familiar? https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/eagles/will-new-eagles-defensive-coordinator-sean-desais-scheme-be-more-same

March 6, 20232 yr Author Matt Patricia in play for role on Eagles’ coaching staff Posted by Mike Florio on March 5, 2023, 3:06 PM EST Veteran Patriots assistant Matt Patricia, who served as offensive coordinator last year without the title, could be headed to an unfamiliar team, but with a more familiar role. Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald reports that Patricia has a shot to land on the Eagles’ coaching staff. He would be, per the report, "presumably” the linebackers coach. Patricia spent 14 years with the Patriots before becoming head coach of the Lions in 2018. He returned to the Patriots in 2021 in a jack-of-all-trades role, before emerging as the de facto offensive coordinator in 2022. The Patriots haven’t officially severed ties with Patriots, but there’s a nagging sense that he won’t be back. The Eagles hired Sean Desai to serve as defensive coordinator following the departure of Jonathan Gannon, who is now the head coach of the Cardinals. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/03/05/matt-patricia-in-play-for-role-on-eagles-coaching-staff/

The Eagles were the best passing defense in the NFL last season, so he whacks the guy who facilitated that? I guess he thinks it's time for a hard reset on the defensive side and is moving on from Gannon's guys.

I think this may be the first story he ever broke. I don't trust his reporting or slant on things.

The pass defense was good because they acquired Slay, Bradberry &CJGJ all of whom were already good before they got here. I'm sure Wilson helped but like Duce a position coach is repalceable and production is based more on talent & scheme than the position coach himself
March 6, 20232 yr Well it is starting to feel like this off-season the Eagles are making the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Twitter beefs, upsetting team leaders, losing players to free agency rumors, brining in outside coaches that force other liked coaches out the door, while there’s no word on Hurts and his contract, or any attempt to retain any of these free agents. The 2023 season doesn’t seem like it’s off to a good start.

The 2023 season doesn’t seem like it’s off to a good start. Settle down. You buy into this supposed drama every year. Twitter beefs - not sure what this is, but players tweeting stuff usually isn't much Upsetting team leaders - other than a rumor of a potential hiring of Patrecia and Slay not liking him, what else is there? Losing free agents - every team loses free agents especially with so many hitting FA. They will prioritize who to keep, some have been known that will leave as expected So they hired an outside coach as the Defensive Coordinator, and another coach they mutually parted ways because he wanted a promotion. Hiring outside coaches is usually seen as a good thing meaning they're not set on their ways. When they hire from within fans complain they're NOT hiring outside coaches Hurts - ridiculous, what do you mean no "word?" Howie already made comments about it, and there is no timetable. You don't think Howie has a plan for Hurts contract? That's silly. "Any attempt" to retain free agents? Free agency period hasn't even started yet what are you even talking about? Calm down.

All I’m stating is we aren’t hearing the Eagles discussing anything with anyone other than wanting to keep Jalen as a priority. Heck Howie has already said we are going to lose players. Free agency hasn’t started yet, but I sure do see a lot of rumors about other teams interest in Eagles players or the Eagles about to lose a certain player or the Eagles are going to allow a certain player to walk. There’s also rumors about Slay being traded. So far no reports of restructuring contracts in order to get more players. I’m sure some things will happen, but I’m tired of hearing about the Eagles beefing with JuJu. Tired of hearing about Matt Patricia and Slay. Tired of hearing about players going on Twitter to trash former coaches. Heck I miss the rumors about how the Eagles are interested in every player available. Even though they weren’t true it made the Eagles seem likely they’re always looking. Will the Eagles fill a team? Of course they will, but since the SB there really hasn’t been much to get excited about. On a side note the Eagles we’re the ones hyping up Denard Wilson and then they basically fired him. He’s the one who got so much out of that secondary. I’m just making note of what is happening and right now it’s not a good vibe.

This is often the case after a team loses the Super Bowl. Still, the offense will be in tact for the most part, and may even be beefed up with fresh additions from the draft. I'm hoping for an upgrade at the RB position. The defense is going to drop off significantly I believe since that is where most of the team's losses will have occurred.

The only rumor I’m seeing about the running back positions is that they’re going to let Miles explore FA and that they believe Gainwell can be an every down back. 😂 Honestly I still think they can be a playoff team next season, but I don’t think they will be able to be a SB contender. There’s so many moving parts especially on defense and the coaching staff. I think the offense can still move the ball regardless which is why I still consider them a playoff level football team.

Overall I’m not even bringing up the fact he didn’t get the DC job. Just noting how they hyped him up, then unceremoniously dumped him, and more importantly it creates another hole to fill in this coaching staff. The last time they made all of these moves it didn’t turn out well.

I mean 2017-2018 when they lost Dflipp, and Reich. The offense struggles, and then 2019-2020 when they added so many faces to their coaching staff. There was one head coach in those changes trying to make that balance. The same thing happened to Reid when he was trying to balance new coaches like Castillo, Mudd, and Washburn with a bunch of new players. It tends to be a bad mix unlike brining in an entirely new coaching staff.

These rumors - often based purely on made up reporter speculation for clicks and views - happen every offseason, and every offseason you and others get worked up about it. Everyone knows they will not retain every free agent. We don't event want them to retain every free agent as some aren't very good and should walk, or will want too much money. Some were planned with draft picks already selected to replace them. Some had contracts structured knowing they would leave after this year. I have a few I hope they re-sign but the rest can go. Remember the offseason Cox was entering his final year and wanted a big contract? And fans were freaking out because free agency opened and nothing happened yet? All the rumors, fear monger reporting and speculation made fans panic that Cox would leave and sign elsewhere. Howie was signing other free agents from other teams and restructuring other current players...all with the plan of taking care of other deals first so he could then structure the Cox contract against the cap each year and put whatever he needed to into signing bonus. That was much easier than doing the Cox deal first, then having to work every other deal around that one. It's why Howie is smart when it comes to contracts. People panicked and listened to rumors...then they signed Cox. There is no "vibe" or reason to react to anything because nothing has happened yet. Teams can't sign their own players until March 13th then free agency opens March 15th. Since when do the Eagles leak their intentions to the media via rumors so fans can feel a better "vibe?" That would give away their plans and lose negotiation power. It's just silly. We have this media rumor/speculation discussion every year, you should know better by now.

If Desai wants to bring in his own guys, imo its fine.
