Current live PC with Howie and Siri, 1st question about hiring Matt Patricia.  Nick said it's "trending in that direction."  He said they're discussing with the staff and players including Slay to make sure everyone is on board.

Man, I really hope they know what they're doing with bringing Patricia in.  If he rubs players the wrong way, this isn't a good thing.  Could also undermine Desai.  Not sure about this move.

I agree.  Coaches from the Patriots rarely seem to work out.  Am I wrong about that?

Eagles are taking care of business.  No more defensive lightweights like Gannon.  Now we are going to be able to throw the kitchen sink at teams if we want.  Patricia may be prickly a la Dr. Evil but he's not the boss anymore so he's going to have to watch his mouth.

Feck. Patricia and his stupid pencil.

At least we didn't get Zeke or have some Russell Wilson/Kyler Murray debacle to deal with.

Can't win 'em all.

This has more of a Howie feel to it than Sirianni.  Hope I'm wrong.

I don’t think that’s a hire at all. In fact that is one that could really back fire!

Either way, Desai is a relatively inexperienced DC and a guy like Patricia could provide a lot of savvy and insight.  It's smart organizationally.

Older article on him and his years as a DC on where he ranks.

I don't get this hire at all. Slay absolutely despises Patricia and he's one of the team leaders. Seems like more trouble than its worth...

Coming in as a defensive assistant I wonder what his job actually will be. I doubt it will be anything to do with actual coaching but he could be brought in to create blitz designs and packages while doing film work on upcoming opponents. One thing former Patriot coaches know is how to study film.

They worked just fine as positional coaches and coordinators.

I don't see the point, it's just bad vibes all round, like when Howie made Doug take Scangarello and Mornhinweg as offensive advisors, it smacks of Lurie and Howie telling Sirianni that he can have his way on choice of DC but we're hiring a babysitter for him.

I've disliked Patricia. Really came off as a Bill Belichick wannabe when he was coaching the Lions. From the sweatshirts to being snippy, sarcastic, and short with reporters, even though he hadn't earned anything as a new head coach.

I’ve been trying to convince myself why it could be a good hire, can’t find many reasons. Don’t like it

I’m in the same boat there. I don’t like it either and I don’t really get it. I mean he’s won in the NFL so I guess there’s that. And I think Sirianni has earned our trust. But I am sceptical about the move I really am.

I hope he doesn't cause a problem for Desai being the new DC wanting to establish things, and he doesn't try to flaunt that he worked with Belichek or was a former DC or HC, that he knows his role here.  Siri doesn't need to babysit the coaches and worry about that stuff.  Hope it works out but I wouldn't have done it.

Gannon ducking the media so he doesn't have to answer questions about having taken a call from Arizona when he should have been preparing for the Super Bowl.

Jonathan Gannon declines to meet with reporters during the 2023 draft

Posted by Mike Florio on April 30, 2023, 11:25 AM EDT

Before the Cardinals unveiled their new uniforms, coach Jonathan Gannon boasted to a live audience, "I’m very comfortable talking to the media.”

Apparently, not comfortable enough.

As noted by Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com, Gannon didn’t speak to reporters a single time during any of the three days of the draft.

It’s not required by the league, but it’s commonplace. Even Bill Belichick does it. The goal is to parlay the plausible hope that comes from the use of draft picks into hype and excitement and other things that generate revenue for a team.

So why didn’t Gannon speak to reporters? Maybe he didn’t want to have to answer questions about his factually-inaccurate claim that the media in Philly wanted him fired for not blitzing enough. Or maybe he didn’t want to have to address his decision to take a call from Cardinals G.M. Monti Ossenfort at a time when such calls were prohibited by tampering rules.

Ossenfort has owned up to the blunder. But it takes two to telephone tango. Gannon knew or should have known he shouldn’t be talking to Ossenfort, but Gannon did anyway.

Reporters covering the Eagles would have plenty of questions about this. What else was Gannon doing to prepare for his next job when he should have been fully focused on finishing his last one the right way — by holding a double-digit, second-half lead and delivering a Super Bowl win.

It’s also possible Gannon knows plenty about the story behind the story. It’s hard to buy the idea that the Cardinals self-reported the violation of a rule that gets violated all the time. There has to be something more to this, especially from the Eagles’ perspective.

It’s a potential minefield through which Gannon would have to tiptoe, if questioned publicly about it. By not meeting with reporters at all, Gannon ensures that he won’t say something that could make a bad situation even worse.
