Jalen Hurts named the Philadelphia Eagles biggest X-Factor entering the 2020 NFL season

Jalen Hurts has yet to play a down in the NFL, yet he’s been the subject of countless debates and discussion since the Eagles made him the No. 53 overall pick in the second round of the draft.

Hurts has either been labeled the Eagles future, a gadget player, or an asset that the Birds will eventually turn into a first-round pick. Hurts’ has definitely been polarizing and Bleacher Report recently deemed him the Eagles’ biggest X-Factor heading into the 2020 season.

Philadelphia Eagles: QB Jalen Hurts
26 OF 32

The Philadelphia Eagles did not draft former Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts to replace Carson Wentz. However, this doesn’t mean Hurts cannot be a valuable X-factor in 2020.

The Heisman finalist won’t merely be Wentz’s backup, you see. According to Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson, they also plan to utilize him in offensive sub-packages.

"Taysom Hill on steroids,” one source said, per Robinson.

Fans who have watched Hill create mismatches for New Orleans over the last couple of years got a glimpse of what sort of impact Hurts can have—only, the upside is far greater. Hurts has legit 4.59 speed and has improved his throwing ability since losing Alabama’s starting gig to Tua Tagovailoa.

Last season, Hurts threw for 3,851 yards and 32 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,298 yards and 20 scores. He isn’t going to approach these numbers as an NFL rookie, but they should give you an idea of just how much of an X-factor Hurts can be.

The Eagles are banking on developing Hurts any early extended playing time would be disastrous because that would mean Carson Wentz suffered another significant injury.

The plan for Hurts is to get on the field in a Taysom Hill-type role this season while alleviating some of the hits Carson Wentz would normally take.

I really hope the team do use Hurts as a Taysom Hill on steroids type player. For me it'll be extremely frustrating and disappointing if they don't find creative ways to get him on the field.

I highly doubt they would have used such a high pick if they weren't intent on getting him on the field this year.  This pick wasn't just about the future it's about now.

Uh our backup QB is not the "X" factor. I'd say our new WR. Or even Sanders.

Hmm - they may get him on the field, but I'm sceptical  about how effective he will be and also the risk of taking Wentz out of a rhythm. I remember when we tried to use Vick in a similar way. It didn't work.  I guess you hope it works out like Hill or Lamar Jackson, but the Ravens were transitioning into Jackson anyways.

I still firmly don't like the pick and still believe it was made so that the Eagles have a different option as a franchise QB in the event that Wentz continues to get hurt.

I mean yeah that's got to be the main reason I absolutely don't doubt that. You can't take a QB in the second round if you're main plan for them isn't to one day potentially be your guy. But they've got to find creative ways to use him this year.

Yeah - I mean I'm open to anything that makes the offense better. But I just don't like the idea of taking Wentz out for gadget plays. Hopefully he can contribute though.

But to call him the big X-Factor, as this article does, is a massive overstatement. I think we may see him maybe 3-4 times a game.

The Saints do it with Brees though...
