my general point here is that when people think of sex trafficking, you're talking Epstein level behavior. Women and girls, sometimes men and boys, forced into engaging in sexual acts against their will.

That is an AWFUL disgusting crime. Among the worst imaginable IMHO.

I find it difficult to put a 17 year old girl consensually engaging in prostitution, horrific though THAT is, in the same ballpark.

Either way it's disgusting. Gaetz is gross.

But woefully incorrect.

If I recollect what I've heard correctly the allegations involve a 19 year old and a 15 year old? Meh.

It's not like he was staking moral high ground from his knees.

Should be interesting in court.

At least we all know who to keep our daughters away from and who possibly is a child predator on this forum.

Absolutely. I just don't like seeing terms like sex trafficking watered down as part of an attack on a politicians - deserving or not.

Sex trafficking is an absolutely evil practice. And there is nothing that I've seen that makes Gaetz a participant in or complicit in engaging in sexual acts with women who were forced into it.

I'm also generally speaking a proponent of legalizing sex work (for adults). But that's besides the point.

I don't believe that is true, unless these girls were coerced/forced to engage in sexual acts.

If they were engaging consensually for money, it's prostitution.

I think that's where the underage factor of it comes into play. From your link:

If a 16-year old runs away from home and meets a new friend who encourages him or her to make money by selling sexual favors, that is sex trafficking because the person is under the age of 18.

That runs counter to the earlier line though that required a 3rd party beneficiary - beneficiary to me being the key legal term. Unless that "new friend" benefits from this, how are they the beneficiary?

We will see what he is charged with.

I am perfectly fine with any adult paying an underage girl for sex and taking them across state lines, to be charged with sex trafficking.

yeah I'm not shedding tears over Gaetz or whatever pounding in the @ss he's gonna receive in jail.

I just look at a situation where a 17-year-old engages in sex for cash very differently from teenage girls (and boys) being kidnapped from poor nations and neighborhoods and sold as sex slaves, which is what comes to mind for most when the term sex trafficking is invoked.

FWIW I don't think crossing state lines matters. https://www.justice.gov/criminal-ceos/citizens-guide-us-federal-law-child-sex-trafficking#:~:text=§ 1591.,in a commercial sex act.

Section 1591 is called "Sex trafficking of children or by force, fraud, or coercion.” Most people think of "trafficking” as involving movement across state or international borders. However, Section 1591 does not require proof that either the defendant or victim crossed state or international lines.

17 year olds can’t make the choice to consensually agree to sex for cash. Their brains aren’t even nearly developed enough to make such a decision which is why adults who engage in that behavior should absolutely be held accountable for trafficking. I mean yeah it’s probably worse to be violently kidnapped and forced to be a sex slave but that doesn’t take away from any engagement with a minor in such a way is considered trafficking. They aren’t of the mind to make that choice "consensually”. Using cash as an enticement for sex from a minor is coercion.

But also if you’re a 40-year-old man trying to date 17-year-olds you’re a loser.  Lol

I think you have a view of it like it’s a business transaction like they’re some Vegas call girl, which would be an incorrect view.

Most of the time prostitutes in the US are victims of sex trafficking. I guarantee you this is a similar situation.

Early reports indicate the 17 year old is now in porn.

I'm not trying to claim that what Gaetz did wasn't wrong, heinous, and criminal. I just feel like the headlines are designed to invoke a particular image that's not consistent.

Gaetz is a piece of crap.

so you were an alter boy back in the day. gotcha.

Teenage sex trafficking is unfortunately much more common than you'd think. I've seen close to 10 cases that I know in my early career, most of whom were abused for years before they were identified. Hard to think of a more despicable crime.

I imagine there are a lot of reasons she ended up where she is. The very reason I mentioned it however was to highlight that this woman is still heading down a bad path.

I didn't grow up in a lily white suburb. I just ended up here. I've known some who ended up down that path, some of whom had their light snuffed out before they saw 30. The most common reason among those was that they simply didn't feel like they had a better choice, and when they start walking down that path it's very easy to keep walking.
