time2rock
EAGLES BUZZ: HOWIE ROSEMAN OPENLY CRITICIZES CARSON WENTZ AHEAD OF SUPER BOWL By Victor Williams February 8, 2023 GM Howie Roseman is basking in the glory as the Eagles prepare for their second Super Bowl in six years. Just two seasons after the franchise was seemingly destined for obscurity, Roseman put together a Pro Bowl roster that will be competing for a championship this Sunday against Kansas City. 2022 Acquisitions EDGE Haason Reddick (three-year, $45M) WR Zach Pascal (one-year, $1.5M) LB Kyzir White (one-year, $5M) WR AJ Brown (acquired from Titans) CB James Bradberry (one-year, $7M) S CJ Gardner-Johnson (acquired from Saints) DE Robert Quinn (acquired from Bears) DT Linval Joseph (signed midseason) DT Ndamukong Suh (signed midseason) Traded up to select DT Jordan Davis Drafted C Cam Jurgens in the second round Drafted LB Nakobe Dean in the third round Philadelphia won a franchise-record 14 games this season, a testament to Roseman’s work during the offseason. The journey wasn’t without its tribulations, one of which was the decision to select Jalen Hurts in the 2020 draft. Prior to the draft, then-franchise QB Carson Wentz had just carried a beaten-down Eagles team to the postseason, becoming the first player to pass for 4,000 yards without having a single WR over 500 yards in NFL history. Not to mention, Philadelphia handed Wentz a historic $128M extension the previous summer. Fast forward to the following offseason, the Eagles had many holes on the roster that needed attention. They filled one of them (or so we thought) in the first round with WR Jalen Reagor. Then, with the No. 53 overall pick in the second round, Philadelphia brought in his eventual replacement, although that wasn’t always the plan. Hurts was drafted to be a cost-controlled insurance plan for Wentz, who had just gotten knocked out of a postseason game due to injury. We all know what happened next — Wentz sustained one of the most catastrophic declines we’ve ever seen at the position and was shipped to Indy the following year, leaving the starting job up for grabs. Hurts seized the opportunity and has cemented himself as one of the bright young stars in the game. Roseman addressed the polarizing decision on Monday during Media Night and didn’t hold back on his feelings toward Carson Wentz: "You need depth in this league. Why wouldn’t you consider building depth at the most important position of all sports?” said Roseman via The Philadelphia Inquirer. "The league is a competitive league. If you’re worried that we’re bringing in depth and talent, you’re probably not the right guy at that position.” Yikes — sounds like the organization was well aware of the potential attitude issues with Wentz. Whether Roseman was anticipating the downfall or not, credit to him for moving on from Wentz when he did. Lord knows I didn’t want to give up on him. Regarding the current situation at quarterback, owner Jeffrey Lurie stated that Jalen Hurts is "just what we’re looking for,” alluding to a long-term contract extension in the near future. If he leads the Eagles to a Super Bowl victory on Sunday, Hurts’ next deal will undoubtedly put him in the Kyler Murray range ($46M annually), and well deserved; his improvement from 2021 speaks for itself. As for Carson Wentz, his tenure in Washington appears to be coming to an end as the Commanders sustained more success with Taylor Heinicke under center. In addition to young signal-caller Sam Howell waiting in the wings, things don’t look too bright for the seven-year pro — and now another one of his backups could potentially be hoisting the Lombardi trophy. Jalen Hurts stats 2021 2022 Comp. % 61.3% 66.5% Passing yards 3,144 3,701 Passing TDs 16 22 Passer rating 87.2 101.5 Rushing yards 784 760 Rushing TDs 10 13 https://thelibertyline.com/2023/02/08/eagles-roseman-criticizes-wentz/
