An 8x reduction in derailments from our parent's generation? That's nuts. These F'ing things were coming loose left and right back then I guess.

Manager told rail worker to skip inspections after the worker complained to the manager that she was receiving complaints about doing inspections.

Just skip them.

Must have been all those kids putting pennies on the tracks....

Don't fix the trains. Skip the inspections. Smoking gun. Profit over safety.

Another train derails in Ohio. Norfolk Southern claims no hazardous material was on board the 200 plus train cars

https://news.yahoo.com/officials-norfolk-southern-train-derails-181659555.html

The latest incident comes more than a month after another Norfolk Southern train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio.

Okay, why are they refusing to accept this waste, when they have qualified sites to accept the waste.  Maybe they should let the public know every shipment to site before this "crisis”.  These are certified waste disposal sites.  It’s all political postering.

Trains keep derailing all over the country, including Wednesday in Arizona. What's going on?

DENVER – Since a fiery Ohio derailment on Feb. 3, trains have derailed in Florida, West Virginia, Michigan, Oklahoma, Alabama and Nebraska. On Wednesday evening, a freight train carrying corn syrup derailed in western Arizona.

Data shows these derailments are not unusual.

Every day, the nation's railroads move millions of tons of raw materials and finished goods around the country on about 140,000 miles of rails, but their safety record is getting new attention amid the ongoing scrutiny of the East Palestine derailment disaster.

Federal data from 2021 and 2022 says an average of about three trains derail in the U.S. a day. While not all derailments are equally as dramatic or dangerous, railroads are required to report any derailment that causes more than $10,700 in damage.

About 60% of all rail accidents occur in yards where there are more complex operations and lower speeds that tend to cause minimal damage," said Jessica Kahanek, a spokesperson for the Association of American Railroads, a trade group. "More than half of those are caused by human factors or human error."

Railroads are required to report any derailment that causes more than $10,700 in damage.

How often do hazmat crashes happen?

While most train derailments and crashes are relatively harmless, hazardous materials have spilled or leaked from trains more than 5,000 times in the United States in the past decade, according to a USA TODAY analysis of federal incident reports. In comparison, there were 67 hazmat leaks from highway transportation for every rail last year, according to federal records.

Still, in 2022 alone, rail operators reported 337 hazardous material leaks or spills, only 32 of which were classified as "serious." Only six were reported to have caused an injury. Railroad derailments counted for 1 in 10 hazmat wrecks in the past decade – and 1 in 4 of those incidents last year, USA TODAY found.

AAR, the trade group, says that 99.9% of all hazmat shipments reach their destination without incident and that the hazmat accident rate has declined 55% since 2012.

Railroad safety bill proposed

Introduced on March 1, the Bipartisan Railway Safety Act of 2023 aims to increase train safety while ensuring communities get the help they need to deal with hazardous materials spills when they happen. President Joe Biden has already endorsed the legislation.

Specifically, the bill:

  • Dramatically increases fines for safety violations, raising them from a maximum of $225,000 to up to 1% of a railroad’s annual operating income, which for the largest carriers like Norfolk Southern could be more than $50 million.

  • Mandates railroads pay for more hazmat response training in communities where trains roll through.

  • Mandates "hotbox" detectors" every 10 miles to remotely sense if a passing train's wheels are getting too hot, which federal experts say is what caused the East Palestine derailment.

  • Requires two-person conductor-engineer crews on most freight train routes.

  • Funds research into safer tank cars that are less likely to spill or leak.

"This legislation provides us with tools to hold companies accountable to prevent terrible tragedies like the Norfolk Southern derailment in East Palestine and to make those communities whole," Biden said.

A BNSF train derailed in northwest Washington early Thursday, local officials said, spilling an uncertain amount of diesel fuel.

A freight train derailed in northwest Washington just after midnight Thursday, leaking what state officials estimated could be up to 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel, though a spokesperson for the train company said it’s far less.

The train with rail company BNSF toppled on a berm near a channel in the Swinomish Reservation in Anacortes. Most of the fuel leaked on the land side and no injuries or impacts to water or wildlife were reported, the state’s Department of Ecology said in a statement.

400,000 gallons of radioactive water leak from Minnesota nuclear plant

While Xcel reported the leak of water containing tritium to state and federal authorities in late November, the spill had not been made public before Thursday.

"We knew there was a presence of tritium in one monitoring well, however Xcel had not yet identified the source of the leak and its location," Minnesota Pollution Control Agency spokesman Michael Rafferty said.

"Now that we have all the information about where the leak occurred, how much was released into groundwater, and that contaminated groundwater had moved beyond the original location, we are sharing this information," he said, adding the water remains contained on Xcel's property and poses no immediate public health risk.

The Minnesota Department of Health also stated on its website that the leak did not reach the Mississippi River.

"The groundwater beneath the facility, it's been determined that it moves in the direction of the Mississippi River, slowly, but that's the direction that it flows, or moves, underground," Doug Wetzstein an industrial division director with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, told CBS Minnesota.

Massachusetts train derails, no hazardous cargo reported

https://www.yahoo.com/news/massachusetts-train-derails-no-hazardous-165945807.html

AYER, Mass. (AP) — Five freight train cars derailed in Massachusetts on Thursday, but no hazardous materials were being hauled and there were no reports of injuries, according to authorities.

The freight cars that toppled over at about 11:30 a.m. were carrying sealed containers of trash and recycling material, the Ayer Fire Department said in a social media post. Each car was carrying double stacked containers for a total of 10 containers, according to the state emergency management agency.

The fire department called railway operator CSX and utility National Grid to the scene and officials took precautions to protect a nearby waterway.

The train was not moving at the time of the derailment, assistant town manager Carly Antonellis said.

"There were no reported injuries to the crew, no hazardous materials involved, no leaks or spills of any freight and no impacts to the environment," CSX said in a statement. "CSX personnel are responding as the incident occurred on a line jointly owned with Norfolk Southern."

Broadcast video appeared to show Norfolk Southern engines hauling the railcars, but Norfolk Southern in a statement said the train was not theirs and it is common in the industry for one railroad’s equipment to be operated over the network by the crews of another carrier.

Norfolk Southern is the operator at the center of a fiery derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, in early February in which abut 50 cars derailed, spilling hazardous materials and forcing evacuations of residents.

The cause of Thursday's derailment remains under investigation, the CSX statement said.

The fire department advised people to avoid the area.

Ayer is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of Boston.

Plan to test for dioxins near Ohio train derailment site is flawed, experts say

Test relies on visual inspection of ash to then check soil for toxins, which is ‘unlikely to give a complete picture’ of contamination

Oh sure, visual inspection of ash is clearly the best method of testing.

Quote
  • Arcadis will largely rely on visual inspections of the ground to find evidence of dioxins, instead of systematically testing soil samples that may contain the compounds, which is standard protocol.

  • The plan does not say how low the levels of dioxin the company will check for will be.

  • Testing will only be conducted up to two miles from the accident site when ash has been found up to 20 miles away.

  • The testing is limited to soil and does not include food or water.

Sound methodology.

Several Canadian Pacific train cars derailed with some spilling hazardous material in Richland County.

Authorities say it happened around 11:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 26 just one mile southeast of Wyndmere, ND.

31 cars of a 70-car train derailed, with some leaking petroleum used to make asphalt. At this time, authorities are saying there’s no danger to the public.

Canadian Pacific says its hazardous material experts are on scene along with local authorities to asses the situation.

Officials say there is no fire and no waterways nearby.

It’s estimated it will take seven to 10 days to clean up the mess.

Loose barge carrying toxic alcohol compound partially submerged at Ohio River dam

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/loose-barge-carrying-toxic-alcohol-compound-partially-submerged-at-ohio-river-dam/ar-AA19c96E

A set of locks for an Ohio River dam in Kentucky is closed due to a "navigational incident" after 10 barges were released from a tugboat, including one barge carrying 1,400 tons of a toxic alcohol compound, officials said.

The incident occurred at roughly 2 a.m. Tuesday, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Of 11 total barges, 10 became loose from a tugboat; three barges became pinned to the dam, and one additional barge was pinned against a pier, the agency said.

The Army Corp of Engineers said it recovered the barge pinned against the pier by noon Tuesday. It wrote in a statement that the remaining six barges were recovered, adding that the dam's locks will remain closed until the "barges on the dam are stabilized."

Did we somehow get onto the Armageddon track?
