March 21, 20232 yr Sucks, wish he were here as I thought he was a solid contributor, but he tested the market and ended up with another team. Best of luck to him unless the Lions are in our way.
March 21, 20232 yr Jeff McLane published an interesting look at how some of these deals have taken shape a week into free agency. Concerns about CJGJ run deeper than just the contract: He was occasionally prone to mental errors or missed tackles, but his instincts and athleticism offset some of the on-field negatives. Off the field, Gardner-Johnson created some initial friction, but Eagles leaders and internal support got him to buy into the program in a contract year. But the team viewed him as a risk if he signed a multi-year deal — the risk being that Gardner-Johnson could be affected by the millions of dollars he was now being paid. https://www.inquirer.com/eagles/eagles-2023-free-agency-howie-roseman-cj-gardner-johnson-darius-slay-fletcher-cox-20230321.html
March 21, 20232 yr I don't buy all the character issues and social media drama: then why did they offer him a multi-year deal? This seems simple. They targeted him early as a priority, made him an offer and he declined. He wanted more elsewhere, period. They moved on to quickly retain 2 other players in their secondary so they wouldn't lose too many free agents. Got Bradberry signed, Slay wanted an extension and he got it. Both corners wanted to be here. Bradberry even took less to remain. Then there wasn't money left so they couldn't counter the offer. They then signed another safety who has the same agent so it's not like the negotiation on CJG soured and they refused to negotiate further. It was simple business. They needed to retain 2 of the 3 veterans in the secondary. We expected Slay (under contract) to stay and for them to keep either Bradberry or CJG and that's what they did.
March 21, 20232 yr The football team in the UK i support use the phrase "Side before self every time" Its about putting the team first and not yourself. The guys that came back and turned down less money are definitely into that mentality, CJGJ is the opposite - its all about him.

His agents though smh. Shame... shame.

March 21, 20232 yr 4 minutes ago, rrfierce said: nope They miscalculated his value and didn't shut him down... now he has 6.5 million. Bad agent bad.
March 21, 20232 yr 31 minutes ago, rrfierce said: Yeah but didn't he make LESS? Not if you believe what his agents posted. They essentially said that the Eagles offered him $7M over 2 years (i.e., $3.5M per year), with a "fake" third year at a non-guaranteed $17M that would have never been paid because the Eagles would have cut him instead (or tried to renegotiate). Why $17M? I.e., why not $15M or $22M for that third year? It would seem that CJGJ and his agents were intent on announcing a deal worth $8M per year, and based on what the Eagles offered for the first two years, $17M is what it took to get there in that "fake" third year. Notice that the deal with the Lions was announced as $8M for a year, but only $6.5M is guaranteed ... the other $1.5M is probably low probability incentives (e.g., be named All-Pro) that in theory could take it to $8M, but probably won't. BTW, I doubt the agents did anything here that hurt his value like some are speculating. The Eagles made their offer, the agents canvassed the market to see what he could get from other teams, and the Lions deal is the deal that made the most sense - the Eagles were apparently given a chance to match and declined. If you believe there were multi-year deals offered by the Eagles or other teams with lots of guaranteed money that dried up for some reason during the negotiation process, I think you are believing in fairy tales.
March 21, 20232 yr Thank god Howie didn't sign this drama queen. He's a locker room nightmare waiting to happen.

I don't think he'll be a locker room nightmare; he's just taking a shot at a team that he feels didn't value him. He's a solid player, but he overvalued his services.

This dude starting to have some Antonio Brown tendencies. Makes it easier not to like him
March 21, 20232 yr I think people are way overreacting. It's mildly immature, but if mild twitter antics are the worst he's done, there's not much there. Maybe the dude will end up being a **** inside the locker room, but he really hasn't done anything bad on there. Fans are talking trash to him, a mild clap back is about as much of a nothing burger as it gets. People are a) trying to feel better about losing him, so looking for reasons to not like him and b) too emotionally invested in twitter to where people live and die with every small interaction. I see this all the time when athletes post eye ball emojis during free agency and fans are like "DUDE, DON'T F WITH US LIKE THIS, YOU SHOULDN'T BE DOING THIS!" and they don't realize that the whole reason they're freaking out in the first place is they're way too emotionally invested in Twitter-- and that's their fault, not the fault of the player. If he does something actually offensive I'll rip him for it. Hasn't happened.

I'm not sure which team that is, but I'm gonna guess they don't have any Championships with that mantra? That's a great phrase, if the Owners also believed in it too. Owners will dump a loyal player, see Brian Dawkins. Unfortunately, at least in the NFL, there are few instances where that ends well for the player. Usually it only works out when the player taking less has already made his fortune, aka Brady, Rodgers (not that he takes less), Manning, etc. CJGJ is still young. He's not in a position where he can risk his health and take less...at least on purpose. If he was older, and already hit the big payday contract, it might be different.

Well to be fair, the Eagles effectively humiliated him by not beating that contract so I can understand why he’d be salty.

He was commenting on media clips that said he wasn't getting any offers. Then when he signed with Detroit he said only real ones know or something. Whatever man, good luck. I liked him as a player but he's gone now.

He was a very good player and I liked him. But ultimately Howie had a price and they obviously didn’t align. Good luck to him in Detroit. That’s hardly a winning organisation despite the improvements last year.

Left a team that was just in the Super Bowl for a team that in its history has never been to a SB ever.
