Then again I thought Carson Strong would make a good backup so don’t mind my predictions too much. It’s going to take a creative contract mind like Howie to make this work, and by the way Howie got it wrong on both Carson’s so you’re in good company.

Blankenship stood out in camp and in the preseason and lived up to it as an injury replacement. He's a player that plays well and should be expected to improve as well. I didn't see the dropoff you're talking about. CJGJ was a "playmaker" for sure, but his tackling was off and on. I have him as one of the better young safeties in the NFL, but not yet s a top one. He could become that guy if he becomes a more reliable tackler. I just think we were enamored with all the INTs, several of which were just about being in the right place at the right time. CGJG also offers more positional versatility than Blankenship, so there's a valid case for that. But, yeah, I understand I'm being optimistic and I was burned before with Fulgham. The difference is Blankenship has been a standout since day 1. He didn't just come out of nowhere like Fulgham after 15 injuries at the position. There will always be question marks until you get answers. How many question marks did the Eagles have going into 2022? On 3/12/2023 at 3:52 PM, time2rock said: Gut feeling all along was that they would try to make a strong push to keep him in an Eagles uniform. He's only 25, played very well (relatively speaking), and they haven't been reluctant to give fairly large contracts to safeties in the past (most recently ... Jenkins and McLeod). I think the issues with CGJG are that he's not as good as he (and some people on this board) thinks he is and he has a bit of an attitude problem. The interceptions were great, but as you say, a couple of them were pop up deflections and a couple of others were really badly thrown balls. He is a playmaker, but his tackling is suspect. He's not Dawkins. Although a lot of fans hate Gannon and he did suck in the Super Bowl, it was a bad look CGJG tweeting about him and blaming him. Particularly as he had by far his most productive season with Gannon. We saw another tweet recently where he was talking about bring disrespected because he is not getting the top dollar in free agency. I still want him back, but the Eagles were right to not pay him what he wanted (I expect he wants a top safety deal in the 4 year 80 million range.) If we can get him in the 10-13 million range per year then that would be worth it. He's a good ascending safety, but not elite yet.
March 16, 20232 yr Does make you wonder if his outspoken social media posts and general attitude is putting teams off slightly. Teams want professional players that are not going to call the coaches and management out when things don’t go well. He’s probably cost himself a few million with his tweets

I remember him in a interview last year where Slay was yapping away and they asked James why he is so quiet and he replied I let my field work speak for itself. Now that's a culture i can buy in with.

Yep, give me a professional hard worker like devonta smith, hurts or Bradberry over a CJGJ type fair enough if you have massive talent to back it up but not many do.

Maybe a team like the Bengals get desperate, but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up signing somewhere for around 10 million a year as opposed to the 20 million he and a few people thought he might get.

The league has criminals, women abusers, rapists, conspiracy theorists, guys caught with drugs/PEDs, etc. A tweet doesn't make 31 teams not sign a top free agent.

March 17, 20232 yr Author I'm thinking that with the recent Greedy Williams signing, CJ's temper tantrum on Twitter this morning, and later removing any mention of Eagles from social media on Twitter and Instagram, that the negotiations with the Eagles did not proceed as he had hoped, and that the team has decided to move on.

The Eagles probably figured all that out last night which is why they switched gears with Slay instead. The Eagles have a team to run and can't worry about making 1 guy happy. He's sitting at home without a team while teams are slowly running out of money to spend. His market value is being set and it's not as high as he thought. At this point, he'll probably have to settle for a spite-contract with Denver that won't be any higher than the Eagles probably offered him.

You might be right but Greedy Williams has nothing to do with this. He was brought in on a one year deal which is likely going to be really cheap. He is a depth corner/special teamer. I don't see any way they don't sign a S and there are still a few good options out there besides CJ.

No team with any legit playoff aspirations, let alone SB aspirations is going to allow that to happen. I don't think they lose more than two. Score another one for the bad guy. Two already back and a third still a real possibility.

I think CJ’s temper tantrum was not just about the Eagles, but that he isn’t getting anything near what he expected from any team. They will definitely sign a safety and a linebacker at some point in free agency. I expect a backup QB as well. (Edit - just saw they signed Mariota)

Through four days of free agency he obviously hasnt gotten an offer anywhere close to what he was expecting or he would have signed by now. He is probably pissed off at the league right now.
March 17, 20232 yr I guess Gardner Johnson will have to go through what Slay went through. When he realizes that the money in FA just isn't there, Howie's deal, will start looking pretty good. Then he will do an about face and take the deal.

The knock on him, So I have read, is his average speed. Also, the video shows him in the box the majority of the time. I'd like to see more video about his coverage skills, cause he will have to cover and this video doesn't show much covering.
March 17, 20232 yr I have a strong suspicion that CGJ will be back on a 1 year deal. Agreed with all the speculation that he has not been getting the kind of contract that he had hoped for. Honestly, if I'm giving CGJ unsolicited career advice, Desai's defensive scheme would be perfect for CGJ and he could really shine. If he's a pro bowler, he probably will get a lot more attention next season. Just sayin'.

He very well could, but he just did that. Everyone is one injury away from being done, and I'm sure he knows that. Is he the kind of guy that will risk it all again next season thinking there might be significantly more money for him in 2024, or just take the 4 year/50 million dollar deal the Eagles have probably offered him. If I was him, and I'm not, I'd be all about negotiating the guaranteed amount of that contract.

Good player, but temperamental which can be problematic
