Awesome he is the leader of this D

IF true, let’s hope they manage to come to an agreement on a new deal.  Historically, the tag hasn’t exactly worked out well for us.

The franchise tag for safeties is $14.5 million.  At 25?  He's worth it.

Jenkins was awesome…but this dude…especially the hit on pacheco…havent felt this way about a player since dawk…

we need this guy and if we can keep him he’ll be the heart of this team

Yep for a guy who hadn't tackled well he showed up. More than most of the others

I gotta look at the tags and what each position is worth at some point tonight. Didn't realize its 14.5 mill for safeties.

The tag for a safety is pretty affordable, if we can't sign him to an extension, absolutely tag him.

I think the tag would be used as a last resort if needed to buy more time to work out a long-term deal. With as Cap-strapped as this team is, I can't imagine that the team could handle a straight up 14.5 Cap hit for Gardner-Johnson. I think right now we are around 9 mil under the Cap? Yet we have the Jalen extension coming, room for the draft picks .... and oh, about 20+ free agent spots we have to fill. There's only so many kick the can down the road restructures you can do. I have a feeling the 2024 Defense will be littered with Draft picks and cheap free agents. The good thing is that the Offense is pretty much set aside from an upgrade at #3 receiver unless Kelce retires. If Kelce stays we will likely just move Jurgens to RG to replace Seumalo (almost surely gone in free agency). We can just draft some late Rd Olinemen and let Stoutland work his magic for backup help.

This is a huge mistake in my opinion unless they let Epps go and let Blankenship be the other safety. I said this in the blog, it's really important to look beyond the interceptions.

Gardner-Johnson at safety is okay, but he doesn't tackle all that well. He also sells out for interceptions. However, he might be the best slot defender in the league when he lines up there rather than at safety, and we have two high.

...Don't really see why everyone has such a fascination with Gardner-Johnson, yes he gets interceptions but people would be lighting other safeties who miss that many tackles on fire.

I like him as a defender, sure, particularly when you can bring him down to slot and install a third safety, but I think Blankenship is better as an S in most things than both he or Epps is, and the dude was a UDFA rookie - and the eye test gives you the same impression. He completely blows the other two away in run support for example.

Someone above mentioned Dawkins with reference to CJGJ which I think is pretty silly, especially considering Tra Thomas has been quoted saying that Dawkins really approved of the play of Blankenship, not Gardner-Johnson.

Maybe both can develop more, but right now the only thing that gives me pause with Blankenship is that he's younger and thus needs to show more with more playing time.

He'll just cost more to keep next season, as the price of players including safeties increases. He is just entering his prime and he knows it.

GREAT news. He is the one player they can't afford to lose.

#1 priority free agent to keep.

So why not give him a multi-year deal at that rate? Franchise tags usually don’t go well. The players hate it.

If I had to choose between keeping Epps or CJGJ I am retaining the latter.  Any comments about CJGJ having missed tackles must not have been paying much attention to Epps.  Pair CJGJ up with Blankenship.

He's one of the pieces you'd want to keep, but I don't see this as particularly smart negotiating because the cap hit of the tag would be calamitous for our situation in terms of re signing other impending free agents and everyone knows it, so CGJ's agents must be rubbing their hands right now.

I really hate the use of the franchise tag.

That said, if you had to pick one guy on defense that you really wanted to stay it's probably him.

Good. Although it probably means Bradberry is gone.

I'd say he's the No. 1 pending FA to keep.  Fits their profile of young, versatile and good.

Not sure he would do it.  The salary cap rises every year.  This year's ceiling may well be next year's upper middle class.  With that said, I agree - the best move for all involved is to find the right number for 2023 and escalators that make sense.

Looking ahead, here are the projected tenders for 2024.  Safety goes up to $19 million.

2024 Projected Franchise and Transition Tenders

Position Franchise Tag Transition Tag
QB $41,768,000 $36,435,000

They may tag him but I'm not sure they'll pay him on the tag. I think they'll tag him to keep him in house so they can work out a deal.

He wants to get paid. He is one if the top young dbs and knows it. I don't blame him. He easily could get top 3 safety money on the open market.

Pay the man. Bradberry & Epps leave, start CJG & Blankenship. Draft a corner high to replace Bradberry. Secondary remains strong.
