The Eagles are looking to maintain some continuity with the coaching staff, and the team is reportedly high on special team coordinator, Michael Clay.

Aaron Wilson is reporting that Philadelphia has added an extra year to Clay’s contract, while also adding more money to his salary.

One weak spot on the NFC’s top team, Philadelphia’s special team unit finished 31st in the NFL in Rick Gosselin’s annual rankings and was ranked tied for 29th by PFF.

"Yes he will (return),” Sirianni said. "I thought we did a nice job as far as just improving. We had some rocky beginnings in special teams and I thought we did a nice job improving those special teams as the year went along. A lot of credit to Coach Clay, and obviously a lot of credit to the players that stepped up and made plays to do so.”

The Eagles finished in the top five in offense and defense this season, but head coach Nick Sirianni had previously provided a vote of confidence for the rising assistant coach.

I don't get it I really don't. I get that some of it is personnel and maybe he's not got a lot to work with? But this was a stacked roster and to be ranked 31st on STs is just not good enough.

Get the man a punter and return man.

We had a lot of depth on the team for sure, but you have to wonder how many of those experienced guys we brought in that weren't actually starters for us were really suited for special teams. We had one of the worst punters in the NFL (statistically) and he got hurt and we replaced him with a worse one. Elliot got hurt and missed a little time. We brought in a backup kicker and he played well. When Siposs was lost, we had to shuffle a couple different holders and they held up. When other teams tried fakery and onside kicks against us, our team seemed prepared. We rarely had holding or illegal block penalties called against us which may be why our blocking on returns was less effective. We sacrificed the negative plays at the cost of potentially more big plays. In the second half of the season, Scott looked like the answer returning kickoffs and Covey was twice as good on returns as he was the first half.

Siposs needs real competition this year in TC., Finding an all-purpose return specialist could really help this team. As mentioned earlier, Scott and Covey were capable returners in the latter part of the season, but Scott's future in unknown and Covey needs to continue to improve.

Yeah, we saw what a weakness Siposs was in the Super Bowl. We also saw the damage a good return man can do all in one play.
