Posted March 3, 20232 yr Giglio: Jalen Hurts should take less to help Eagles Joe Giglio believes Jalen Hurts should take less money to help the Philadelphia Eagles. "Jalen Hurts is about winning. He wants to win. And I know he has a responsibility to himself, to his family, to the players," Giglio said on Wednesday's 94WIP Midday Show. "But I look at it like this, Jalen Hurts should take less to help the Eagles. "The best way for him to win is to continue to have good players around him, it'll help him be a winner. And number two, Jalen Hurts has really made a football career of playing on loaded teams...He has had talent around him at a lot of his stops." Howie Roseman spoke about the Hurts contract situation at the NFL Combine saying, "You want to find a win-win situation...Surround him with good players. He knows that, he's a smart guy. That doesn't mean that's not going to be a tremendous contract for him, because he deserves that too." 94WIP Midday Show co-host and former Eagles defensive end Hugh Douglas disagreed with Giglio. "I like Howie, I like him a lot," Douglas said during Wednesday's show. "But if I'm Jalen Hurts that's not an MP, that's a YP. That's not a my problem, that's a your problem. Everything that you're saying is true. But when I look at Jalen Hurts and his draft class—he's the fifth quarterback taken in his draft class taken in the second round. He's worked his butt off to get to this point in his life. Ain't no way on God's green earth I'm taking less money! Now, I understand that there's a situation you want to field a competitive team around you, but that's Howie's job." Hurts, 24, was the Eagles' second-round pick in 2020 and has one year left on his rookie deal, scheduled to make a base salary of $4.3 million in 2023 per Spotrac.com. Hurts is eligible for an extension, something that will most certainly get done this offseason. In two full seasons as the Eagles' starting QB, Hurts has a regular season record of 22-8 with 38 passing touchdowns and 23 rushing touchdowns. He is 2-1 in three postseason games with five total touchdowns and two interceptions. https://www.audacy.com/94wip/sports/eagles/jalen-hurts-philadelphia-eagles-contract-less-money-help
March 3, 20232 yr I doubt Hurts takes less money. Some people point at Brady as the example but Brady could do it because he had a very wealthy wife. This is Jalen's pay day and I expect he'll be at or very near the top of the list for QB compensation. I'll be very surprised if he's not.
March 3, 20232 yr I can see him restructuring his contract after the fact. But I don't see him taking a discount upfront. It would negatively impact the market for other QBs.

The difference in lifestyle is small between 35-45mil. Brady understood he couldn't do it alone. Mahomes took a very friendly team deal.

March 4, 20232 yr Author Contracts are absolutely ridiculous these days. You'll never convince me that a player is unable to "take care of his family" if he earns $200M vs $250M.
March 5, 20232 yr Of course he should take less money. Every QB should take less money to help their team so that they can be competitive and build up the roster. The reality is, most QBs take the huge contracts. And that's likely to be the case with Hurts too. What he does with his second contract is another matter.
March 5, 20232 yr No he shouldn't. He needs to get paid on this 1st contract. People always want these guys to less money like it's not a business or something. Hell outta here.

They should get what they are worth just like any business.

Not only that but Brady didn’t start giving those discounts until he had been in the league getting paid for a decade. At one time he set the new mark for the biggest contract in league history and was consistently among the 2-3 highest paid QBs (along with Peyton) during that time. So yes, he started eventually taking less, but that was after he already had generational wealth.

Hell outta here. I agree. Won’t begrudge him one bit if he gets every penny he possibly can. However, he will be an absolute legend in Philly if he does take a significant discount to keep the team together. I don’t expect it, and think he SHOULD take the money, but would be incredible if he did settle for less.
March 6, 20232 yr With the way Hurts seems (personality-wise), I think he'd be willing to take less in order to keep more talent around him. I also think he's smart enough to realize how important that is if the goal is winning championships. That said, I'm sure he will also have pressure on him to get the biggest deal he can get out of "responsibility" for other NFL players to continue to maximize their earnings. So his dilemma is doing what's best for his fellow players (and himself, too) or doing what's best for the team (if he wants to maximize championship opportunities). I certainly understand the mentality that most professional athletes have in getting the most money they can when they have the best chance to do so because that opportunity may only come once. At the same time, in reality, we are talking about a player that would still make millions and can live comfortably for the rest of their life if they managed their money well.

Typically folks consider this after their 1st contract unless they have a super model wife that makes more than them which in this case he doesn't :)

A more truthful answer is there are external pressures from agent(s), family, and others at your position around the league, who all expect you to push the salary envelope up. If you do, all of them benefit going forward. There's also the internal pressure of getting all you can while you can before injury or something else robs you of your maximum earning potential. That said, I expect Hurts to get the max he can now and I don't begrudge him doing it. If your QB takes a giant bite of the cap, then it's up to the GM to get more top shelf young guys on the roster who the team can win with. That's when Howie and his player personnel department get tested to the max. We'll see.
