So a glass half empty guy that has a man bun... awesome.

You little dork. 🤣

Gotta say this about Penny.... I HOPE he can stay healthy. He is the big back type a lot of us have been asking for.  He misses a lot of games, but heres hoping he can stay on the field. 💪🏼

Penny is a beast but he is never healthy. Not a fan of this move.

Now that we know the contract value this is a great signing.  They will RBBC him with Scott also back and Gainwell+Sermon.  I am psyched to see him behind the Eagles Oline and hope he stays healthy.

I think we will be fine in the end. We will get some restructured contracts, sign some prove it guys to fill gaps and draft to replacements.

If Penny never plays a down but his signing keeps me from reading anymore mock drafts with the Eagles taking an RB in the top ten, he more than earned his money.

As soon as I read a mock draft that has Bijan going to Philly at 10, I immediately back out & quit reading it

I don't disagree. I figured since it was a day two signing it would be around 3-4 million. They got him for nothing, low risk/high reward.

Penny is already questionable for week 1

Honestly... this sucks. He's a good RB

Great job by Howie to sign Bradbury. Now will they keep Slay or trade him during the draft?

based off the ramsey trade, we would not get a great return..unlikely he is moved at all

You’d have to think that with the guys below we’d have enough at RB. Maybe not a 1000 rusher but they can all have bigger roles and spilt sanders snaps between them

penny

gainwell

sermon

scott

As long as we got Scott and Gainwell is emerging, plus we definitely will pick someone in the draft at some point, Penny can be used as a sledgehammer in a chosen games. We will be alright.

Howie would take a conditional 5th to get the contract off the books, Slay is down to be best paid cornerback in the league this year.

I will say I like the "bargain bin" deal for Penny and he could be an ideal rotational RB for us.  But...his injury history is really grim.  The only year he didn't sustain an injury (2020) is because he was still recovering from the previous year's injury and wasn't activated until late 2020 (and barely played at all).

Aug 13, 2018 NFL Hand Finger Fracture Penny broke the pointer finger on his left hand in practice on August 13th. He had surgery on the 15th but was ready for the start of the season.
Dec 10, 2018 NFL Knee Strain Grade 1 Penny missed 2 games with a knee injury.
Sep 20, 2019 NFL Thigh Hamstring Strain Grade 2 Penny injured his hamstring during practice ahead of Week 3 game vs the Saints. He missed two games. He was listed as inactive Week 6 against Cleveland with the same injury.
Dec 8, 2019 NFL Knee ACL Tear Grade 3 Penny tore his ACL during the game against the Rams. He was ruled out for the rest of the 2019 season
Jan 8, 2021 NFL Knee Strain Grade 1 Penny missed a wild card contest against the Rams due to a knee injury.
Sep 12, 2021 NFL Leg Calf Strain Penny injured his left calf during Week 1's game at Indianapolis. He missed five games
Nov 21, 2021 NFL Thigh Hamstring Sprain/Pull Unspecified Grade 1 Penny suffered a hamstring injury in Week 11's loss to the Cardinals. He missed one game
Oct 9, 2022 NFL Leg Tibia Fracture Penny went down in the 3rd quarter of Week 5 at New Orleans.

Three years, 15 million

PFT reporting 1 yr $1.35M.

Penny agreed to a very affordable $1.35 million base salary on his one-year deal, and the Eagles also re-signed Boston Scott to an inexpensive deal and still have 2021 fifth-round pick Kenneth Gainwell on his rookie contract.

$5M per year would have been ridiculous considering his injury history, and if we were going to shell out that much for a RB it probably would have been better to just bring Sanders back.  I'm digging this move ... it doesn't in any way guarantee Penny anything or preclude us from making more moves to solidify the position.  Maybe we trade down from 30 to pick up a 2nd and a couple mid round picks and grab a RB with one of those picks. Imagine adding Gibbs to that rotation.  :o

Penny definitely cannot be relied upon, but could be a great option when fit.

Its a gamble, and will be a real bonus if he plays 5 games or more. Any RB can get easily injured though, theres not really much point spending lots of money on them, i guess thats why we don't really see a high output, high value RB as an essential player.

I like this move as well.  Sanders has a market value of about $8 million and will probably get closer to $10 million in free agency (the tag is $10.1 million).  The Eagles recognize they don't have to pay that kind of money for a running game.  Shrewd, cap-saving move.

Oh, I'm not really against the strategy per se .... I'm just responding to a few who seem to think that Howie somehow has magical cap powers.

No GM in the history of the NFL has ever managed the cap better than Howie. Say what you want about some of his roster moves over the years, he's the best ever at cap management.

We've pretty much always known Howie is the "cap guru."  And he (and lots of GMs) often kick the can down the road it's part of the process.  I think about 2 or 3 years ago we were concerned with the amount of dead money and some contract extensions to aging vets that probably should have been shorter terms.  But he was in that post-Super Bowl win mode trying to retain talent.  Once he realized they wouldn't repeat with them, he started to work on phasing those out and get younger, which he ultimately did.  I was critical of many of those moves, but it seems that in the last 2 years he's righted the ship and has even been drafting better.

It's not like 10 years ago where it was all about those first couple days of free agency with making a "big splash."  You don't want to overpay for the wrong players.  And there are more ways to improve the roster.  Guys that get cut later on, trades as we've listed some examples.

The can exists to be kicked down the road. Dead money is really an artificial thing.  Teams spend about the same every year (pro rated).  Dead money is like taking a loan from your future self. If you do it every year - and all good teams do - it just keeps rolling over.  The bill literally never comes due.

I'm not disputing that ... but at some point you can only free up so much from restructures. That dead money eventually piles up and handcuffs you especially when you are on the verge of signing your QB to a monster contract.

Penny is no Sanders. He is a rotation guy at best.

Fractures and ACL tear are unfortunate freak things. Hope playing on grass helps. The soft tissue injuries are a real problem given his explosiveness. Cheap signing though.

That's exactly what he is, no one should expect this as a 1:1 Sanders replacement.

We had a running back like this before that was a 'great when healthy ' guy ... remember Ryan Mathews. Shame cause Penny is elite when healthy and I'd argue better than Sanders  But .. like Mathews he's never healthy. Sanders wasn't the picture of health either. And this is why we go RBC. Backs get banged up too much

Agreed 100%. I saw a facebook post by John Clark, I believe, in which it says Eagles sign Penny as a "Replacement" for Sanders. I wanted to bang my head against the wall.
