So he could play run downs right away and then see his role increase. A perfect target for the second round. And Howie loves him some U of Florida guys.
March 16, 20232 yr The last 2 years, we've had a different DC that used a different philosophy on defense than his predecessor. Cox was asked to do different things in our hybrid defense. He did appear to be better in the 2nd half of last season, so maybe he was more comfortable with the approach after time. I'm not sure how much different the defense will be under Desai --- we'll have to wait and see. I just don't think Cox has fallen off a cliff like some around here are suggesting. The Cox contract seems favorable, IMO. I don't like having to pay $12-13 for a typical fast food combo these days when just 2 years ago they were half that price, but that's today's price. Hargrave is making top DT money which is more than twice what Cox is getting. Cox has also been extremely durable as a player having hardly ever missed a game due to injury. He'll be asked to play 60-70% of the defensive snaps in 2023. I just don't have a problem with it. It's also a little weird to me that people are so forgiving of CJGJ that they want him to be here as a top paid safety, but because Slay made a few mistakes in the final stretch, they don't want him back on a reduced contract. I get that one is younger than the other, but CJGJ was not a dominating safety. He was a playmaker (which I like), but needed to add consistency as a complete player. People have been trying to turn CJGJ into Dawkins or Jenkins, but both of those guys were natural leaders. I didn't feel like CJGJ showed that quality. It would be cool if we could keep Bradberry, Slay, and CJGJ, but I think I'd choose Slay on a reduced contract over CJGJ on a top-end contract if that's what it comes down to. We had 70 sacks last year with this starting CB duo. Imagine what Buddy Ryan's D could have had if we had a CB opposite Allen playing at Slay's level.

Losing both LBs is going to hurt but I am sure they have a plan to either get some via draft to possibly start OR go after some cheaper veterans (i.e. Bobby Wagner?) They drafted Dean last year, he steps in so that's 1 down. White was a 1 year signing, hopefully they'll do another. But LB was a weakness for so long it was nice having that group last year.

With the secondary almost locked down (hopefully CJGJ signing/franchise tag) they can gamble a little on the 2nd LB spot and safety

I think Denver is really interested but it may come down to money. I think the Broncos have about $7 million in cap space at the moment, not sure what the Eagles have. That could be what tips the scale in his decision. Broncos could create some by restructuring or moving someone like Sutton or Jeudy. Word is they are not shopping the WR's, just willing to listen to offers.
March 16, 20232 yr 3 hours ago, EaglesAddict said: Agreed...not really a fan of bringing Cox back at that number. Sentimental Howie strikes again! If the contract is legit 10Mm a year, then I agree with you but I'd wait to see what the contract numbers really are. This could be a situation where he could get up to 10MM if he hits a ton of incentives but the real number he is going to get may be much lower. Maybe wishful thinking on my part.

March 16, 20232 yr So interesting things this week. Bradberry and Cox had offers from other teams but took less money to stay in Philly. What does that tell you about the coaching and the team culture? We assumed CJG would be gone, he still hasn't been signed yet and rumors are they're pushing hard to re-sign him. Seumalo hasn't been signed yet either, if his market isn't high he could also return on a team friendly deal.

It also tells you how close these veteran players think the Eagles are to winning a Super Bowl. They've made their money. They're willing to deal because they know a Lombardi trophy cements their legacies.

They're going to have a tougher schedule, but the NFC Playoff picture should make it expected to return to the NFCCG regardless of seeding. Having veterans return for continuity helps that chance a lot more. I was kind of expecting a slight step back year just to rebuild some positions through the draft. But if they manage to re-sign CJG and a cheap 1 year LB deal they could go into the draft without a true "hole" on the roster, and really go BPA for the most part. I still like one of the corners at #10 but he won't have to be a day 1 starter. Like Dean, Davis, Jurgens and others he could be developed to start later, while rotating in on some snaps as a rookie.

I think he's a good player, and I don't like the idea of losing two "game day active" players in one offseason, with Dillard being the other. I know the offensive line is good, but I don't want it stretched too thin, especially since Sills is already in a tenuous position.

Either way is fine, Jurgens is ready to play RG if needed then switch to Center when Kelce retires. But, I agree I like the O line depth and returning Seumalo as starter bring consistency.

Exactly what I've been saying ... no better way to learn than to play next to him. See what he sees. See how he changes protections. Etc. And having Johnson on the other side ... huge for his development.
