Would be hilarious if its Carolina at #1 I've seen rumours that Reich loves him but he'd have to be crazy to bet his last HC shot on a talent that raw at #1

Last I heard we had like 7 mil in Cap Space prior to Kelce ... so the Kelce deal now puts is 7 or so mil "over" the Cap limit? Don't we need like 6 mil or so just to draft? and we still somehow have to fill like 3075 positions where we lost free agents? I'm waiting to see how the hell all this Cap Space miraculously opens up.

Plus based on the fact that they are allowing Slay to seek a trade tells me that they'd rather not have to restructure him. So yeah, they don't have much to work with.

I though Brown and Reddick might be candidates for restructure, but damn they're cheap against the cap this year (and we're royally screwed if they don't restructure next year), Lane's last restructure was September '22 so he can't restructure until at least September under the CBA. All our big contracts Brown, Reddick, Johnson, Mailata, Goedert and Slay aren't that big this year apart from Slay and Johnson, and even if we could restructure Johnson, the can we keep kicking on his contract is going to kick us hard in the ass at some point in the next few years.

Every year Howie creates cap space by restructuring some current contracts, converting money into signing bonuses, etc. Remember last year fans worried there was no money to sign anyone? And what did they do? Signed Reddick, Bradberry, White, Pascal, Harris, re-signed Cox & Barnett. Traded for AJ Brown and gave him a huge contract. Traded for CJG and picked up his contract.

I get all that, but usually these moves are done a bit ahead of free agency ... and usually we have "some" indication of who will be reworked and how around how much can be opened up. This year it's almost like a mystery and we're already well into free agency with zero new acquisitions. The one area where we can open up space would be Slay with a post June 1st cut, trade or restructure ... but by the sound of it Slay is only open to restructure if it involves a raise. I'm sure it will all get sorted out in the end ... but the road to it seems more unclear than other years.

This year Goedert, Reddick, AJ and Sweat combined count 28.5million against the cap and we're up against it cap wise even though Hurts is on his rookie deal, next year they'll count $84 million against the cap and we need to pay Hurts. AJ earned about $500k more than Smitty last year. Cap wizardry!

We're not "well into" free agency it is day 2. TWO DAYS. Calm down. They have already restructured Jake Elliot, they re-signed BG and Kelce. In the past they've done restructures or released players several days after free agency started to free up cap space. Last year they signed Reddick on the 3rd day of free agency (we're currently on day 2). They signed Bradberry in May after he was released as a cap casualty. They traded for AJ Brown on draft day, and traded for CJG in August. Big moves that all happened after the initial free agency period. Chill man, let's see what happens this week, the draft, the rest of the offseason. Plus you don't have "some indication" of things. Howie does not leak info. All you have are reports and speculation, negotiation tactics from agents, cryptic messages from players. Every year fans complain it's a mystery and they don't know what's going on, what's the plan for holes on the roster. It's a long offseason.

He structured things such that this year there were more leaving free agents than usual. Some of that was planned with draft replacements, some expected to leave and replaced with upcoming draft picks. We knew there would be guys leaving. Can't keep everyone.

I don't remember ever having this many free agents leave combined with so little money to work with. When you only have a few spots to fill then you don't worry much about names being gobbled up a few days in, but when you basically have to refill your entire defense combined with no cap space ... it makes you wonder a bit.

Actually the official start to free agency is 4pm on March 15th. But most not recognize the 2 day "legal tampering period" as an early start to free agency. But nothing becomes official until 4pm on March 15th so players can still back out of deals they've agree to in principle. But we were never expecting to be players in free agency anyway, so not sure why this comes as a shock to anyone.

Probably for St Paddy's Day happening on a Friday, look out pubs! But yes that was my point that there's the tampering period added in recent years before the official. Remember the great former Eagle Frank Gore? Plus as I said, some of their biggest acquisitions came in April, May and August.

We've pretty much always known Howie is the "cap guru." And he (and lots of GMs) often kick the can down the road it's part of the process. I think about 2 or 3 years ago we were concerned with the amount of dead money and some contract extensions to aging vets that probably should have been shorter terms. But he was in that post-Super Bowl win mode trying to retain talent. Once he realized they wouldn't repeat with them, he started to work on phasing those out and get younger, which he ultimately did. I was critical of many of those moves, but it seems that in the last 2 years he's righted the ship and has even been drafting better. It's not like 10 years ago where it was all about those first couple days of free agency with making a "big splash." You don't want to overpay for the wrong players. And there are more ways to improve the roster. Guys that get cut later on, trades as we've listed some examples.

March 14, 20232 yr Author Eagles agree to deal with Rashaad Penny. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2023/03/14/eagles-agree-to-sign-rashaad-penny/
March 14, 20232 yr Author Signing Penny doesn't make a ton of sense unless it was for vet minimum and he is just here to compete for a spot with nothing guaranteed. Thought Sanders was injured a lot ... he has played in only 42 games in 5 seasons.
March 14, 20232 yr like so many others, I was also on the bash Howie band wagon...but credit where credit is due.... he got us Jalen, he got us AJ, he got us Reddick...he deserves a long leash at this point.... and usually there is always the initial frenzy of Free Agency...then when the dust settles is when Howie seems to strike I'm guessing the same dynamic here...let other teams shell out ludicrous contracts..then 1. Howie sweeps in and finds the 2nd tier guys... 2. brings the razzle dazzle on draft day 3. orchestrates trades during training camp 4. plucks guys cut from other teams during training camps I think he has a plan...and you never tip your hand

I view this (without hearing from Howie or anything yet) as replacing Sanders with more carries for Gainwell, Penny getting some carries and we'll see if they add another draft pick to the mix along with Boston Scott. This is a classic Howie signing where there's not a "hole" on the roster, and gives flexibility should they decide to draft a RB that's great, but if not they can sign another RB later. Especially when teams start making cuts in preseason.
March 14, 20232 yr Good signing. Eagles were missing a power back after Jordan Howard left. He's a better option than Sanders if you ask me.

March 14, 20232 yr Looking forward to the fans that will whine about Penny being the only "big splash" signing they make and that the roster is doomed and they'll only win 4 games, not realizing he's a cheap band aid to add to the mix and they're barely getting started.
