EAGLES BUZZ: HOWIE ROSEMAN IS MAKING A "STRONG PUSH” TO RE-SIGN CJ GARDNER-JOHNSON

Despite all signs pointing towards a CJ Gardner-Johnson departure this offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly still trying to work out a deal with the starting safety.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Howie Roseman is making a "strong push” to re-sign CGJ before NFL free agency begins on Wednesday.

There’s still a chance CGJ is wearing an Eagles uniform next season

Gardner-Johnson is just one of the many key players the Eagles may lose this offseason. James Bradberry, Javon Hargrave, TJ Edwards, among others, are all set to become free agents come Wednesday.

There have been numerous reports suggesting Gardner-Johnson is atop the Eagles wishlist in regards to retaining their own free agents this offseason. This latest tidbit from Fowler solidifies that even further.

At just 25 years old, CGJ is only scratching the surface of his potential. After switching from nickel corner to safety full time in 2022, Gardner-Johnson put forth his best season to date. He posted a career-high six interceptions in just 12 games last season, while racking up career-best 67 combined tackles.

He quickly became a fan favorite and would be an ideal building block for the Eagles secondary moving forward. He’s expected to garner a lot of interest on the open market, but perhaps Howie Roseman has one last trick up his sleeve to persuade Gardner-Johnson to stay. We’ll just have to wait and see.

i am all for cutting Slay with a post June 1 designation to save 17 mil on the cap if we can use that money to sign CGJ.  That should pay for year 1 of his deal and going forward we will pay off dead money on the cap but i don't have next year's dead cap figures.  If anyone does please post it

To me, with Bradberry back now, CJGJ is the priority on defense. Slay $ must be dealt with, but I'm confident in Howie.

Absolutely Don.  CJG is the guy we need to keep and would be worth redoing some contracts if necessary.  Slay's 17 mil cap savings is a good start

Sounds like Slay is gone.

I agree. I was hoping they could renegotiate a deal but his cap number was insane. I guess we’ll be looking very closely at CB’s at #10. We need some youth there.

Indeed we do.  Also hoping we break a 21 year trend and go CB in round 1 and that player shows enough to be inserted as an immediate starter opposite Bradberry.

He’s still out there right? And they are going to cut Slay to free up cap space. I can see this one happening because I think Howie wants him back and I think CJGJ wants to be back.

Cincy signed Orlando Brown. Not sure what their cap situation looks like but that has to put a dent in it. Maybe a little less competition for CJGJ.

Looks like Howie won vs. Slay. Pretty crazy stuff yesterday. But I think Slay realized that no one wanted to trade for him and there were no offers if he was actually cut, so he realized he had to agree to Howie's deal. I hope Howie frees up some cash for CJGJ.
