Posted April 5, 20232 yr I doubt these NFL Execs who purportedly are the source of this article have an inside knowledge about the ongoing contract extension negotiations with Hurts. https://www.nj.com/eagles/2023/04/nfl-execs-say-eagles-jalen-hurts-will-take-one-for-the-team.html?src=rss NFL execs say Eagles’ Jalen Hurts will take one for the team Updated: Apr. 05, 2023, 10:42 a.m.|Published: Apr. 05, 2023, 10:41 a.m. An NFL executive believes Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts (pictured) will sign a contract extension that will allow the team to still have some salary cap flexibility. Tim Hawk | NJ Advance Media for By Chris Franklin | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is up for a contract extension, which is expected to take up a lot of cap space based on his MVP-runner-up performance in 2022. Last season, Hurts’ contract counted $1.6 million against the salary cap but could balloon up to $48 to $50 million next season if he and the team agree on a new deal. However, one NFL executive believes the potentially massive contract will still allow the Eagles to have salary cap flexibility. The Athletic’s NFL reporter Mike Sando talked to executives around the league to get insight on each team heading into the draft. When the topic of Hurts came up, one NFL executive said the extension would be modeled similarly to what Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is receiving. "I think Hurts will do a Mahomes-type deal with good structure for the team,” the executive said. "He seems to get it.” Mahomes signed a 10-year, $450 million deal in 2020 that could go as high as $503 million with incentives, but the team has constantly restructured his contract to create more cap space, allowing the team more flexibility to sign free agents and give other players extensions. The Eagles have used the restructuring process with players such as right tackle Lane Johnson and kicker Jake Elliott, giving them more space under the salary cap. To make room for Hurts’ extension, the Eagles had to move on from a few of their players, including linebacker T.J. Edwards, defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Edwards, a starting middle linebacker who signed a three-year deal with the Chicago Bears in March, was the player entrusted with ensuring the entire defense was in the correct position before the snap, with former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon in his ear up to the 15-second mark on the play clock. Nakobe Dean, the Eagles’ 2022 third-round draft pick, could replace Edwards next season, something another executive said worried him about the defense but ultimately would not significantly impact the team. "There is some concern when you lose your ‘Mike’ linebacker, because he’s your green dot, he’s your communicator, and T.J. Edwards is a smart player, but they drafted the kid from Georgia, so they were prepared for that,” a different executive told Sando. "Their offense drives them, and I think they will be fine.”

Sounds like he is guessing and nothing more. Plus that’s still a hell of a lot of money! So I mean he’s not exactly taking one of the team if he takes a Mahomes type deal. And FWIW I’m not saying that he should take one for the team. We’d all like him to of course but he should get PAID.
April 8, 20232 yr I’ve said this before, but I still believe Hurts does, in fact, "get it”. I think he knows he needs good players around him in order to succeed and that will probably factor into his contract. They will figure out the best way to structure it so that he "gets paid” while also leaving room for maneuvering with other players in order to keep building contenders as much as possible.
