Eagles training camp notes: Young CB flashing, Mailata vs. Garrett and more

In the latest Eagles notebook, Josh Jobe making a name for himself, Jordan Mailata ready for joint practices and more

By Dave Zangaro  Published 6 hours ago

The Eagles have made it through 10 days of training camp and are finally ready of their first preseason game.

The summer is far from over, though.

Joint practices against the Browns and Colts are yet to come and there are still two more preseason games before final cuts.

But before all that, let’s clean out the notebook:

All eyes on Josh Jobe

This offseason, the Eagles signed Greedy Williams in free agency and then traded up to draft high-profile cornerback Kelee Ringo in the fourth round.

But neither of them appear to be the Eagles’ top outside backup corner. That spot belongs to Josh Jobe.

"I think Josh Jobe is obviously playing well,” Jalen Hurts said this week when asked which young corners stand out. "He’s a physical corner.”

Jobe, 25, earned a roster spot last summer as an undrafted free agent out of Alabama and is having another impressive training camp this year. When James Bradberry missed some practice time with a groin injury, it was Jobe who replaced him.

And Jobe has been making plays all summer.

"I feel like the game has slowed down for him,” Bradberry said. "I think he’s thinking at a faster pace. He’s always been athletic, he’s always been physical. I think that showed last year. But I think the mental part of the game is definitely starting to improve for him.”

Bradberry explained a couple of the tips he gives to Jobe. One is to use his 32 5/8ths arms to his advantage. Jobe was in the 87th percentile among corners in arm length coming out of college. And the other was for Jobe to use his heavy hands to his advantage when he’s in press coverage.

"He can also run,” Bradberry said. "I think he’s faster than me. I think it’s going to be a good year for him.”

Facing a monster

Jordan Mailata was a little disappointed last summer when the Eagles showed up to the first day of joint practices against the Browns and Myles Garrett wasn’t there. But Garrett did show up for Day 2 and faced off against Mailata in 1-on-1s. After practice, Mailata and Garrett chatted for a long while, exchanging tips and thoughts.

And now Garrett and the Browns are coming to Philly for joint practices on Monday and Tuesday. Mailata joked that he wasn’t looking forward to facing the perennial Pro Bowler, but he is.

"We talked (last year) about what he sees that I do,” Mailata said this week. "Myles gave me a couple of good tips to kind of key in on what he looks for. Those are things that come this time next week, I’m not going to try to give it to him and see where I am this year and compare it to where I was last year. I’m looking forward to it. I really am. Because Myles is a helluva player, man. He is a helluva player. And why not go up against the best when you can and see and evaluate where your game is at. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

Garrett, 27, was the No. 1 overall pick back in 2017 and has lived up to his draft status. He is a four-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro. He has 16 sacks in back-to-back seasons and already has 74 1/2 in six NFL seasons. The only players with more sacks in the last six seasons are T.J. Watt (77 1/2) and Aaron Donald (75).

Here’s what Garrett told NBC Sports Philadelphia last summer about facing Mailata:

"I think he’s talented. I think he’s very athletic. I think he’s also a good person. He came over to learn more and I try to learn from him. I know they set a little bit differently than some other teams. They really kind of give them an opportunity to go 1-on-1 with the D-ends. I think he likes the challenge and the opportunity.”

Taking a punch

The Eagles spend a lot of time on ball security and for good reason. They talk about it constantly, there are reminders hanging in the building but they also work on it in practice quite a bit too.

Here’s one of my favorite ball security drills from practice:

That got me wondering: Does Singleton ever miss?

"He’s accurate but he’ll miss sometimes,” Kenny Gainwell said with a smile. "He’ll sometimes catch you in the jaw or catch you in the arm.”

As a rookie in 2021, Gainwell fumbled twice but he didn’t cough up the ball once last year in 116 touches in the regular season and playoffs.

Gainwell said he doesn’t mind when a punch from Singleton hits him instead of the ball. Because that happens in games too.

"That all comes with it,” Gainwell said. "We always go between the tackles and there’s always big guys hitting you in the arm, hitting at the ball, defense always ripping at the ball, trying to like pull your hand off the ball. Basically, that’s always going to help us. That’s going to help us down the line when we’re carrying the ball.”

It’s always him

During Wednesday’s practice, there was a play when Landon Dickerson leveled Derek Barnett on a crack-back block and Barnett wasn’t pleased. He stormed over to Dickerson and shoved him to the ground, eliciting a penalty flag flag.

Another personal foul.

"Yeah, you know, I love his his competitiveness,” Nick Sirianni said. "I love how tough he is and everything like that. But in a scenario like that you can't react. Anytime you get a personal foul you always want to talk about, hey, we can't do that because we have to fight them within the next play legally, right?”

On one hand, maybe the block from Dickerson really was too much. Barnett wasn’t the only player displeased by it. Players are supposed to take care of their own at practice. Sirianni didn’t want to answer a question about his take on the block but said they’re still looking at it. It might have been over the line.

But on the other hand, Barnett has earned a reputation over the years for these types of penalties and for making stupid decisions on the football field. If it was any other player, you’d probably be more willing to give them a pass. Not Barnett.

Barnett has been penalized 26 times in his NFL career, including 11 personal fouls, according to NFLPenalties.com.

Sirianni said he planned on using this moment as a teaching point.

"It’s a good teaching lesson for everybody,” Sirianni said. "There will be things that a guy on another team does that's out my control that I'm not going to like. You have to be able to play tough, violent, strong, nasty, aggressive, all those different adjectives, and have to do all those things while doing it legally.

"It'll be a good teaching moment for all of us to be able to teach off that, just like we teach off any situation. That's just another situation that popped up that we'll learn from and get better from.”

Barnett is in the final year of his contract and took a pay cut earlier this spring. He might be the Eagles’ fifth edge rusher but there’s no guarantee he makes the 53-man roster.

Eagles stock up, stock down after preseason game vs. Ravens

Here's the latest Eagles stock watch after their 20-19 loss to the Ravens in the first preseason game.

By Dave Zangaro  Published August 14, 2023

The Eagles played in their first preseason game of 2023 on Saturday night, falling just short against the Ravens 20-19 in Baltimore.

Even though the Eagles weren’t able to snap the Ravens’ long preseason win streak, they did learn plenty about their team.

While most of the Eagles’ starters sat for this game, we got our first extended look at a lot of rookies and young players. Some performed well, some didn’t.

Here’s the latest stock watch:

Stock up

QB Tanner McKee

The rookie from Stanford was very impressive and might have solidified the No. 3 job with his performance on Saturday night. McKee completed 10 of 20 passes for 148 yards but the stats don’t tell the whole story. He was slinging it on Saturday night and completed passes of 33, 27, 19, 18 and 17 yards and his best throw, to Joseph Ngata down the left sideline, was ruled as OPI. McKee looked the part.

CB Eli Ricks

After a quiet start to his summer, the UDFA from Alabama broke up a couple passes and had a 31-yard pick-6 in the fourth quarter. He jumped a pass to the boundary and took it to the house. Ricks is in a crowded cornerback room but finally impressed on Saturday night and looked like the guy who was once a freshman All-American at LSU. Another UDFA CB, Mekhi Garner, had a forced fumble on a punt return too.

CB Mario Goodrich

The second-year corner from Clemson has been a full-time nickel cornerback this summer and had a good showing in this game with a couple pass breakups and a tackle for loss. Like Ricks, his chances to make the roster aren’t great but Goodrich stuck around on the practice squad last year and could do it again.

WR Tyrie Cleveland

The ball was going to Cleveland more than anyone in this game. He ended up with 5 catches on 10 targets for 68 yards. Likewise, Greg Ward had 5 catches for 53 yards. It’s not too surprising to see young quarterbacks rely on veteran players like Cleveland in these games. Cleveland caught a 27-yarder from McKee on his first pass of the game.

S Sydney Brown

The third-round safety was really fun to watch on Saturday night. He was flying all over the field and making plays. He finished with a game-high nine solo tackles but his play style is what really stood out. Brown has been buried on the depth chart but with a starting spot up for grabs, it might be time to see him with the ones more.

DT Jalen Carter

We only saw Carter for two snaps against the Ravens but on his first — the first of his NFL career — he used an inside move to get a QB hit and nearly had a sack. It was just a glimpse into why Carter was a top 10 pick and one of the best players in this draft.

S K’Von Wallace

Before Brown was flying around on defense, that role belonged to Wallace, who delivered a couple big hits in this game and finished with five solo tackles. Wallace has been rotating with Terrell Edmunds next to Reed Blankenship at safety all summer. Even if Wallace doesn’t win that starting gig, he might have a role on defense in 2023.

Stock down

RB Kennedy Brooks

Last week in practice, the Eagles were at the goal line and handed off to Brooks, who fumbled the ball forward into the end zone. The Eagles stress ball security so much, so it wasn’t a good sign to see Brooks fumble again in this game.

QB Ian Book

Not a good showing for Book, who is trying to retain his No. 3 quarterback job. He completed 1 of 4 passes for 11 yards and was sacked 2 times for 21 yards. To his credit, he did have five rushing attempts for 24 yards. But the lasting image of this game for Book will be his running backwards on 3rd-and-8 and taking a 21-yard sack.

QB Marcus Mariota

Mariota showed off exactly what he’s been doing in training camp all summer. He made some plays with his legs but just missed a few passes he probably shouldn’t have. He also took some hits at the end of those runs. Mariota is an important piece of this team as the backup quarterback; let’s at least get him to the starting line healthy.

WR Britain Covey

While some of the other depth receivers did impressive things on Saturday, Covey missed the game with a hamstring injury. Right now, he’s the No. 5 receiver and will probably make the team as a primary punt returner. But he missed an opportunity to show growth on offense.

OT Dennis Kelly

Kelly has been working with the third-team offensive line and took 41 snaps, all a right tackle on Saturday. Kelly was beaten by a spin move from Malik Hamm in they third quarter for a sack. Hamm is a UDFA from Lafayette and Kelly is a 12-year pro. And if Jack Driscoll is the backup right tackle and Tyler Steen is the backup left tackle … do the Eagles need Kelly?

LB Shaun Bradley

It was a shame to see Bradley get hurt on Saturday night. He tore his Achilles and is out for the year. It’s even worse for him because this is Bradley’s final year under contract on his rookie deal. The Eagles will miss his presence on special teams in 2023.

"Jason Kelce said he’s OK after getting banged up late in practice.

Josh Sweat was slow to get up at one point. He didn’t leave practice, though, and later told reporters that he merely felt dizzy.

• DeVonta was tough for the Browns to cover at this time last year. As detailed in the preceding Hurts section, he was a problem for them again today. Pretty good player! Spoiler alert: He’s getting my MVP point for this corresponding BGN Radio practice recap podcast episode.

• Sydney Brown took some first-team safety reps. It wasn’t the entire first-team since Derek Barnett was at defensive end and Nicholas Morrow and Christian Elliss were the linebackers. Still, it’s a good opportunity for Brown to slowly but surely move up the depth chart.

• The Browns weren’t the only team with a good day rushing the passer; the Eagles got to Watson a number of times. Josh Sweat, Haason Reddick, and Nolan Smith all notched "sacks.”

• Darius Slay surrendered several catches. Nothing egregiously bad but the Browns didn’t exactly fear throwing his way.

• Nakobe Dean gave up two catches during his two 1-on-1 battles to Browns fourth-string running back John Kelly Jr. His lack of size showed up as an issue as a pass went past his outstretched arm.”

Giving up a couple catches isn’t too much of an issue, but giving them up to a 4th stringer might be. Liking what I am hearing and seeing about Brown right now, but I am not hearing or seeing a lot of positive things about Dean.

Eagles training camp observations: Ups and downs from Day 1 vs. Browns

The Eagles had their ups and downs against the Browns in a joint practice on Monday afternoon

By Dave Zangaro  Published August 14, 2023

The Eagles were back on the practice field on Monday evening and they brought some friends with them, hosting their first of two joint sessions against the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns hosted the Eagles for a couple joint practices last year in Berea, Ohio, and the Eagles are repaying their part of the home-and-home in 2023.

It was good to see some familiar faces back in Philly:

image.png.f6ce1f8a7fb73563312ead78106285a5.png

image.png.817d69dcd884493e15e166c3808c240a.png

While there was some cheering and a bit of jawing, there were no fights between the two teams on Monday. That’s good news for these two coaching staffs.

For the most part, I watched the Eagles’ offense when the fields were split. I’ll switch for Tuesday’s session and watch their defense more. But the final team period was on the same field with both sidelines watching to give it a more competitive feel.

Let’s get to the observations:

1. As always, we start with housekeeping:

• The Eagles made a roster move on Monday, signing DT Olive Sagapolu and placing LB Shaun Bradley on Injured Reserve. Bradley suffered a torn Achilles in the preseason game on Saturday. Sagapolu is wearing No. 66

• The injury report from the start of practice:

Will not practice: WR Britain Covey (hamstring), LB Patrick Johnson (ankle), WR Quez Watkins (hamstring)

Limited: WR Deon Cain (ankle)

• Left guard Landon Dickerson left practice early. After a trip to the medical tent he went inside. But after practice, he was walking around the practice field with his left ankle wrapped. Doesn’t look serious.

2. A few depth chart notes:

• Sydney Brown wasn’t out there at the start of team drills but the rookie safety did get some first-team reps. He had a strong performance in the preseason game and presumably earned first-team looks.

• Without Watkins, we saw Olamide Zaccheus work with the Eagles’ first-team in the slot.

• When Dickerson left practice, the Eagles first gave Sua Opeta some of those left guard reps but then inserted Josh Sills later. Gives an idea of the depth chart.

• When the entire field gathered around one field late in practice, they began with Nakobe Dean next to Nicholas Morrow at linebacker. Reed Blankenship and Terrell Edmunds were at safety.

3. It was a rough day for the Eagles’ first-team offensive line against the Browns, who had several "sacks” in team drills. Myles Garrett, as you might imagine, was a handful for Jordan Mailata on the left side of the line. Garrett had a couple and really wrecked practice for a while but it wasn’t just him.

Sometimes it’s tough to tell exactly what is and isn’t a "sack” in a practice setting. But the Browns had around five or six in this practice and Jalen Hurts was forced to try to leave the practice several times.

4. On a couple of those near sacks, Hurts ended up scrambling and delivering really impressive throws that may or may not have counted in a game. That’s another tricky thing with an elusive quarterback like Hurts in a practice setting.

Hurts threw an impressive ball to DeVonta Smith on one of those plays after Smith gained some separation from Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward deep down the right sideline. A few plays later, it was a similar situation with an even more impressive throw from Hurts. He threw it across his body on a rope to Smith, who got some space against Ward. Hurts really zipped it in there.

It’s probably fair to say that the Eagles’ best offensive plays against the Browns on Monday came off-schedule, which isn’t ideal.

5. Ward also got the best of Hurts in 7-on-7s. He picked off Hurts on a deep pass down the right sideline intended for Smith. It was a tad underthrown — Smith had a step — and Ward made Hurts pay for it with an interception.

6. (Guest ob from Roob) Over at the middle field, the Eagles’ first defense went up against the Browns’ 1’s and 2’s in 7-on-7s. The most notable play for the Eagles was an interception by Reid Blankenship off Browns backup QB Josh Dobbs, who started the last two games last year for the Titans. Dobbs targeted receiver Anthony Schwartz, but linebacker Zach Cunningham batted the ball in the air and Blankenship snagged it.

Darius Slay and Amari Cooper got some good work against each other, but the best play by an Eagles defender against Cooper came along the left sideline when Avonte Maddox stuck his right hand in front of Cooper on a 12-yard out from Deshaun Watson, batting the ball away. Cooper beat Slay for a 20-yard gain from Watson on a corner route, but the next time they paired up, Slay had great coverage on Cooper and Watson threw the ball 10 feet over Cooper’s head.

7. After an impressive performance in the preseason game, receiver Tyrie Cleveland followed it up with a beautiful catch on a Marcus Mariota pass on Monday. Cleveland caught a perfect pass put on his back shoulder by Mariota with CB Lorenzo Burns offering tight coverage. It was a gain of 25-plus yards.

8. We’ve talked a lot about the Eagles’ running backs catching the ball out of the backfield this summer but we’re also seeing them line them up in other spots to gain matchup advantages. On Monday, the Eagles had D’Andre Swift lined up wide right and threw a quick bubble screen his way for a nice gain. They then ran a very similar play to Kenny Gainwell on the left sideline that wasn’t as successful.

Also saw a nice burst from Swift during the first team period of the day. He’s shifty and can really accelerate.

9. Some notes from watching Eagles receivers work vs. Browns DBs in 1-on-1s:

• The highlight play came from A.J. Brown, who caught a deep ball on Martin Emerson Jr. The ball was placed perfectly on his back shoulder and Brown used his signature late hands to bring it in down the left sideline.

• Ward got a PBU on Smith on their first rep against each other but Smith came back later and got some separation on a curl.

• Nice separation from Zaccheaus, who carved up Mike Ford Jr. on an inside route.

10. At the end of practice, both teams gathered around one field for a competitive period with everyone watching. This is basically a game replacement for Eagles starters, who aren’t going to play much (if at all) this preseason.

The Eagles’ offense came out with a couple quick passes to Dallas Goedert and then a quick 10-yard out to Brown. But after that, Smith failed to haul in a deep ball that turned him around, Hurts had to scramble away from pressure and the drive stalled. Even without Garrett and Ward on the field. Both left practice early for the Browns.

The Eagles’ defense looked pretty good against the Browns’ offense in this period and they were aided by a couple drops from Cooper, who dropped 12(!) passes last season. The drive was ended by a Jalen Carter sack as the rookie continues to get more work with the first team. It’s worth noting that Derek Barnett lined up inside on that play and some of his best reps this summer have come from a DT position.

Stupid Observation of the Day: I’m a creature of habit so when I arrived for an evening practice, I couldn’t stop myself from saying "Good morning!” to every person I saw on my walk to the field. Maybe I’ll get it right tomorrow.

https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/eagles-training-camp-observations-ups-and-downs-from-day-1-vs-browns/532418/

Quez seemed to have some major momentum going into the first PS game, but now he’s injured with a hamstring. Maybe it isn’t an issue, but it always feels like speed guys always have lingering hamstring issues. Hopefully that won’t be the case with Quez.

https://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/news/eagles-training-camp-practice-notes-august-15

5. The second team period honed in on low red zone plays. On the first snap, Jalen Hurts faked out Za'Darius Smith on the handoff to Kenneth Gainwell, who was able to scoot up the void left by the pass rusher. On the next snap, D'Andre Swift took a shovel pass from Hurts while in motion, rushing to the perimeter of the right side.

We haven't seen this wrinkle yet.

Eagles-Browns joint practice takeaways: Jalen Carter, DeVonta Smith put on a show against Cleveland

The Eagles and Browns had the first of their two joint practices

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns were just what each team needed. An intense hour and a half practice session between the two teams was as good as advertised, with both Philadelphia and Cleveland providing excellent looks throughout the session.

Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, Jalen Hurts, DeVonta Smith, A.J. Brown, Joel Bitonio, Wyatt Teller, Jason Kelce, and Lane Johnson all on the same field? The joint practice certainly lived up to the hype.

Some observations from the session from both teams, along with who stood out during the day:

The Jalen Carter show

image.png.c4f016540b9108a47cb4e2e4f41fa20e.png

Carter flexed his muscles against the Browns guards throughout the day, and this is Joel Bitonio and Wyatt Teller that Carter was facing (two of the best players at their position in the league). The Eagles rookie was dominant at the snap, finishing with two sacks and a fumble recovery against the Browns first-team offense.

On a separate play, Carter pushed a blocker aside and wrapped up the running back. On the next play, Carter got a pressure on Deshaun Watson and forced him out of his comfort zone.

The Eagles had Carter on the first team at defensive tackle and on the edge in 3-technique (a new wrinkle for the defense). Carter was dominant at both spots.

Carter was arguably the best player on the field this practice -- and there were some good performances.

DeVonta Smith vs. Denzel Ward

image.png.a0a8a52ee7ba0ff3ee570af1ecc2f681.png

Wide receiver-cornerback battles don't get any better than the show Smith and Ward provided in the joint practice. Smith was getting the better of Ward on some plays, but Ward was able to respond immediately after getting beat.

In 1-on-1s, Smith was able to use his route running ability to breeze past Ward on a curl for an easy first down. Ward followed with an interception off Jalen Hurts as the ball was under thrown. Smith did have a step on Ward on the route, but Ward's closing speed allowed him to get the interception.

Smith later was able to get behind Ward for a deep touchdown on a beautifully thrown ball from Hurts. He caught two deep balls from Hurts on the day, serving as the go-to receiver when the Eagles wanted to showcase their big-play ability against the Browns.

Ward still held his own against Smith during the practice before leaving with an illness. Both players are as good as advertised.

Amari Cooper -- not his best day

image.png.c996621862691f8dfeb85e8d487335b3.png

Cooper had a lot of targets against the Eagles in the joint practice. Unfortunately, not a lot of production.

A great route runner himself, Cooper struggled to catch passes against the Eagles secondary. Toward the end of 11-on-11s, Cooper finished with consecutive drops -- one of which led to a Reed Blankenship interception. Zach Cunningham forced the ball heading towards Cooper's way to be tipped, but Blankenship was the one that got the turnover.

Cooper does find ways to get open, but the Browns need him to be consistent catching the football. He certainly had his opportunities to make plays.

Browns defensive line -- as good as advertised

image.png.cf31125d6f41d4fe87496760aa3637c1.png

The Browns made life tough for Jalen Hurts, as the Eagles quarterback was flushed out of the pocket several times in 11-on-11s. While Hurts was able to make a few plays with his legs and get the ball downfield, he was sacked at least five times by the Browns pass rush.

Myles Garrett made his case as the best pass rusher in football, completely controlling the edge and getting off his blocker well. The Eagles offensive line was banged up with Landon Dickerson leaving early and Jason Kelce also not finishing the session, as the depth was evident.

The depth on the Eagles offensive line is a concern, and was evident when Dickerson was out. Sua Opeta struggled in place of Dickerson. Give credit to the Browns front, as Garrett with Za'Darius Smith will be a dangerous combo going forward.

Eagles defensive line -- also as good as advertised

image.png.c4b5a7a13ad71017d1627b02777aa002.png

Jalen Carter was the star of the show, but the Eagles defensive line as a whole feasted on the Browns offensive line. Nolan Smith and Haason Reddick also had sacks, as the Eagles edge rushers were able to get Watson easily (Reddick beat Jedrick Wills and Smith was untouched). Josh Sweat also had two sacks. Derek Barnett would have gotten credit with a sack if the whistle wasn't blown.

Sydney Brown -- getting first-team reps at safety -- also finished with a sack. Brown was flying all over the field, making sure his defender didn't get in front of him and finding the football. He significantly helped his case to start at safety.

Reed Blankenship

image.png.ad12c520b40a217976a2af51641c82f4.png

On top of his interception, Blankenship nearly had a diving interception off an Amari Cooper drop as well. He also had a pass breakup in the session, consistently putting himself in position to make plays.

Blankenship is a starter on this defense. No matter the look (base or box nickel with three safeties), Blankenship will play every snap on the first team. He's a good player -- a great find for the Eagles.

Eagles RB situation

image.png.fd0e914c220c7ded91ba21d0664aa19b.png

Kenny Gainwell still continued to be the first back to play in 11-on-11s, getting the majority of the carries in those situations. He's the running back the Eagles trust the most in late-game and pressure situations.

D'Andre Swift immediately spelled Gainwell and had a 50-yard run on his second snap in 11-on-11s. Swift is the back that spells Gainwell and gets a significant number of snaps when he enters the game. The Eagles even had Swift line out wide on one play.

Gainwell and Swift are the combo at this stage in camp. They are the "first team."

Injuries

Browns

  • Myles Garrett left with a foot injury, but returned after practice to sign autographs.
  • Denzel Ward left with an illness.
  • Jack Conklin will be getting evaluated for a concussion.
  • Elijah Moore (ribs) sat out practice. Greg Newsome II (groin) returned for the first time since Aug. 1.

Eagles

  • Jason Kelce and Landon Dickerson both left practice with undisclosed injuries, but stayed after and hung out with family and Browns coaches.
  • Quez Watkins and Britain Covey are still out (groin), along with Patrick Johnson (ankle). Deon Cain was limited with an ankle injury.

Who won?

Give this one a draw. Both teams' defensive lines looked very good while the offensive lines struggled. The Eagles offense was disappointing outside of DeVonta Smith, who had a few long completions.

The Eagles defense appears to be very good, while the jury is still out on the Browns based on how the Eagles offense looked. Day 2 will be more telling where the Eagles offense and Browns defense stand.

Tuesday's practice will be a better indicator of which team had the better week, but the competition was healthy. The Browns were certainly fired up to come to Philadelphia.

I'm expecting a lot of the league to start copying the Chiefs creativity. The Eagles have the ability to get more creative and have done so i  their own ways. I'm interested to see what else they come up with.

I liked when they would show QB sneak then actually toss to a RB.

Day 2 with the Browns- The Eagles were pissed about practice 1 and kicked the Browns asses all day long.

Eagles training camp observations: Eagles bring the juice, tempers flare vs. Browns

The Eagles brought the juice to their second practice with the Browns and had a dominant performance

By Dave Zangaro  Published August 15, 2023

The Eagles lacked juice on Monday when they took the field for what ended up being a lackluster performance on Day 1 against the Brown.

Not the case in Day 2.

In a practice that got moved up from 5 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. because of expected storms in the area, the Eagles were fired up for the second of two joint practices against the Browns and they dominated on both sides of the football. The Eagles seemed a bit humbled by their performance on Monday.

Did they bring more juice today?

"What did you see?” Avonte Maddox responded. "I definitely feel like we picked it up today.”

They absolutely did and they dominated. Don’t expect to see starters play on Thursday night in the preseason game against the Browns. The real game happened on Tuesday afternoon.

Let’s get to the observations:

1. As always, we start with some housekeeping items:

• The Eagles added Haason Reddick to their injury report with a thumb injury. It sounds like he’s going to miss some significant time the rest of this summer and the Eagles aren’t going to rush him back. But the team also doesn’t expect him to miss any regular season action.

• Did not practice: Reddick (thumb), Landon Dickerson (foot), Quez Watkins (hamstring), Britain Covey (hamstring), Patrick Johnson (ankle)

• Dickerson was a spectator after injuring his foot on Monday. Jason Kelce, who got up slowly after the final rep of Day 1, was a full participant on Tuesday.

2. A few depth chart notes:

• Sydney Brown got more first-team snaps at safety but the Eagles rotated quite a bit next to Reed Blankenship. We saw Brown, Terrell Edmunds, K’Von Wallace and Justin Evans get some work with the ones.

• Nakobe Dean and Nicholas Morrow began as the first-team linebackers but then Christian Elliss and Zach Cunningham rotated in.

• Without Reddick, Brandon Graham filled it at the left edge spot but there was a healthy rotation along the line. Nolan Smith and Jalen Carter rotated in with the first-team too.

• Over the last two days, we’ve seen James Bradberry get some work as a slot corner and Zech McPhearson playing outside. Those won’t be permanent position switches but it’s worth noting.

• Olamide Zaccheaus continues to fill in for Watkins at slot receiver.

• Sua Opeta and then Josh Sills filled in for Dickerson at left guard.

3. The Eagles brought the juice and that led to a couple of scuffles on Tuesday. I got lucky watching the Eagles’ defense against the Browns’ offense because that’s where the first fights of the summer happened.

The first one came after Cunningham deflected a Deshaun Watson pass that was picked off by Blankenship. As Blankenship began to return the INT, rookie safety Sydney Brown leveled Browns RB/WR Demetric Felton Jr. with a block and the Browns took exception. (Brown was getting a little feisty in a special teams drill on Monday, so it wasn’t a surprise to see him involved in this scuffle.)

Dawand Jones found Brown and gave him a good shove, which led to a pretty big scuffle that went on for a while before players were separated. At least players were separated before things got out of control. It wasn’t a fight with dangerous haymakers, just a lot of shoving and repositioning, which is good news. You don’t want to see someone stupidly punch a helmet.

Then a few moments later, presumably perturbed that he wasn’t involved in the first fight of training camp, Derek Barnett got in on the action. The Eagles’ veteran yellow flag magnet got into a shoving match with tight end Thomas Greaney after Barnett matched up with him in coverage. This one was stopped much quicker and there was a bunch of laundry on the field.

4. Let’s talk a bit about Blankenship because he had two more interceptions on Tuesday after having one on Monday. So he picked off Watson three times in these joint practices. The second-year safety won a roster spot last year as an undrafted rookie and he’s having an even better summer this year.

One of his interceptions came when the fields were split and the other came in the most competitive period of practice late in the day.

His first came off a tipped ball from Cunningham, a repeat of Blankenship’s interception from Day 1. Blankenship’s second interception came late in practice on a pass targeted for Jordan Akins. Credit Barnett with a nifty spin move to force the early thrown and then Blankenship made Watson pay, rising up to snag the ball in the end zone. He then celebrated with a little basketball move, passing the ball through his legs a few times like a crossover before hitting the finger roll.

Blankenship should celebrate. He should be confident. He’s having a tremendous training camp.

5. Tyrie Cleveland did it again. The Eagles’ receiver had a great catch over Lorenzo Burns in the end zone on a perfect fade thrown by Marcus Mariota. Second day in a row with a spectacular catch for Cleveland, who is making a strong roster push. After this catch, Cleveland hurled the ball in the air and let out a primal slew of unprintable words as his teammates rushed to celebrate with him.

6. Josh Jobe had a big interception working against receiver Cedric Tillman in the end zone of the final competitive period. It was the exclamation point on a big win for the Eagles in this practice.

7. Carter keeps flashing special traits. In this practice, he ended up rushing All-Pro guard Joel Bitonio and putting Bitonio on the seat of his pants. He pancaked the guy who is used to doing the pancaking. Carter needs to stack days and show consistency but these flashes are just a hint of what might be to come in his career.

8. No Reddick, no problem. The Eagles’ pass rush was able to get home plenty on Tuesday and Josh Sweat got Watson at least a couple times working against left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr., who is no slouch. Sweat has been steadily in the backfield all training camp.

9. I watched the Eagles’ offensive line vs. the Browns’ defensive line in 1-on-1 drills. The Eagles’ OL had a much, much better showing today. Some notes:

• Lane Johnson handled Za’Darius Smith with ease. For what it’s worth, Johnson looked just as solid on Day 1 as the rest of the O-line struggled.

• Another rough rep for Cam Jurgens against Dalvin Tomlinson, who did damage to him on Monday too. Tomlinson (6-3, 325) is the type of player who might give Jurgens some trouble this year so it was good for him to get this work.

• Myles Garrett didn’t do team drills or 1-on-1s so Jordan Mailata went against Ogbo Okoronkwo and was able to take him well wide of the QB.

10. The Eagles had a very good practice and then absolutely dominated the final and most competitive period of practice, when the entire team gathers around to watch. No one was watching closer than DeVonta Smith, who was right on top of the action on the sideline after his reps were finished.

Here’s what happened in order:

• Eagles’ first-team offense vs. Browns’ first-team defense: This drive started with a DPI on Martin Emerson Jr. on A.J. Brown. And it ended with Brown catching a fade over Emerson Jr. in the end zone for a touchdown. It might have been a slight push-off from Brown but he is so subtle with that push-off and it wasn’t called. The Eagles went for 2 after the touchdown and Kenny Gainwell ran it in for the score.

• Browns’ first-team offense vs. Eagles’ first-team defense: This period started with a Sweat sack and then Sweat "tackling” Watson on a scramble. There was an overthrow to Amari Cooper, then a short completion to Donovan Peoples-Jones against Bradberry. And then the Blankenship INT in the end zone to finish the drive.

• Eagles’ second-team offense vs. Browns’ second-team defense: This drive started with a few shaky-looking incompletions from Mariota, including one where he tried to make a weird arm-angle throw on the run like Patrick Mahomes and it just didn’t work. But Mariota made up for it with that beautiful fade to Cleveland in the back left corner of the end zone. Cleveland leaped over the DB to make the contested catch. And on the 2-point conversion, Mariota went back to Cleveland in the front right of the end zone.

• Browns’ second-team offense vs. Eagles’ second-team defense: After a few short passes were completed, Josh Dobbs tried to get the ball to Tillman on a fade and Jobe just went up and got it.

This was a dominant stretch for the Eagles.

Stupid Observation of the Day: During early warmups, I watched Browns rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson throwing a rugby ball. Apparently, some quarterbacks do this for the same reason baseball players take swings with a donut. It makes the regular size football feel smaller and lighter.

Eagles 2023 training camp practice notes, Day 12: Eagles dominate the Browns

The Eagles came into Tuesday's second joint practice with the Browns much, much sharper.

Eagles safety Reed Blankenship has been a ball hawk in camp.

Day 12 of Philadelphia Eagles training camp is in the books, and it was the second of two joint practices with the Cleveland Browns. If you read our practice notes from the first Eagles-Browns joint practice on Monday, you know that I thought the Browns won the day. In the second joint practice on Tuesday, the Eagles handed down a thorough spanking.

Reed Blankenship was stellar. During 11-on-11's Zach Cunningham had a breakup, and the ball found its way to Blankenship, who was in good position trailing the play. On Blankenship's return, Sydney Brown absolutely lit up Browns RB Demetric Felton. Some Browns players took exception to Brown's violent block and a fight broke out.

During a goal line session, Blankenship filled a hole with urgency and met Nick Chubb head on, stopping Chubb in his tracks.

And then during the scrimmage portion of practice, Blankenship jumped in front of TE Jordan Akins for another INT, resulting in a raucous celebration by the Eagles on the field and on the sideline.

• Blankenship wasn't the only Eagles defensive back to make a big play during the scrimmage portion of practice. Josh Jobe had a leaping INT in the back left corner of the end zone while covering talented rookie Cedric Tillman. Once again, Eagles players on the field and on the sideline were pumped.

Jobe is a lock at this point to make the roster, by the way.

Jalen Carter had a highlight reel rush when he put Joel Bitonio on his ass. Bitonio might have tripped (not sure), but Carter looked physically impressive on the play. Bitonio has made five straight Pro Bowls, and Carter made him look bad.

• I thought rookie seventh-round pick Moro Ojomo was disruptive in the first preseason game against the Ravens, and he made some more plays against the Browns. On one run play, he locked out the guard trying to block him with one straight arm, causing a logjam. With his free arm, he helped make the tackle. Ojomo is country strong.

Josh Sweat had a strip sack. Technically you're not supposed to be reaching for quarterbacks' arms in practice, but 🤷‍♂️. Sweat has had a strong camp, just like the last two years.

• The other near fight was between Browns TE Thomas Greaney and... I'll give you one guess. (Jeopardy music playing)... Yeah, Derek Barnett. They got into it after the whistle but it didn't escalate too far. Still, flags were thrown. #ItsAlwaysHim.

• On the offensive side of the ball, A.J. Brown caught a deep ball over Martin Emerson for the second straight day. He had a subtle push-off as the ball was incoming, creating just enough separation to be able to make a clean catch for a TD. He then rolled the ball at Emerson's feet, which Emerson and Greg Newsome did not appreciate. The two Browns corners and Brown had words after the play.

DeVonta Smith was active once again, like he was yesterday. His highlight was a TD reception on what looked like a corner route. He got wide open and Jalen Hurts was able to connect on an easy throw.

Tyrie Cleveland had a strong night in the preseason game against the Ravens, and it carried over into joint practices. Cleveland was the recipient of a perfect Marcus Mariota throw down the left sideline for a TD. On the ensuing two-point conversion, Mariota hit Cleveland for a score on a sprint out to the right.

• There are not a lot of negative things to say about the Eagles today, but if I had to pick on someone it would be Dennis Kelly. He got dusted on an inside move by Lonnie Phelps. Cinderblock feet. He has also just not looked very good, generally speaking. I'm beginning to wonder if Kelly is long for the 53-man roster.

• (Clears throat)... Injuries. These guys didn't practice:

  1. Haason Reddick (thumb)
  2. Landon Dickerson (foot)
  3. Quez Watkins (hamstring)
  4. Britain Covey (hamstring)
  5. Patrick Johnson (ankle)

image.png.39918bcedd43e0b4e4cc249c5ad0dd4b.png

• I would be remiss if I didn't note that Myles Garrett didn't participate in team drills today after wrecking yesterday's practice.

Reddick seems to be picking up a few injuries so far. Hopefully they're being cautious.

I came here to worry about that too.

Thumb surgery is tricky and while a cast might somewhat protect it, his all important hand technique will be seriously limited. And those kind of injuries linger. The Eagles need a big year out of Reddick.

Just saw on ESPN ticker that it requires surgery but he's expected to play wk 1

The injury situation is becoming a thing after last night.  Playing on a short week this early in the season is downright unsafe.

Eagles training camp observations: Slay makes impressive interception

The Eagles were back at practice on Saturday morning so we have some notes on Darius Slay, Dallas Goedert and more

By Dave Zangaro  Published August 19, 2023

The Eagles were back at practice for a lighter session on Saturday. It was a beautiful and breezy summer day at the NovaCare Complex.

One more practice on Sunday, a walkthrough on Monday and then the Colts are in town for a joint practice on Tuesday. The final preseason game of the summer is next Thursday at 8 p.m.

Let’s get to the practice observations from the 13th training camp practice of the summer:

1. As always, we start with housekeeping and we have a lot of notes today:

• The Eagles made the following roster moves before practice: They signed DT Robert Cooper, DT Marvin Wilson, DT Caleb Sanders, LB Tyreek Maddox-Williams, and LB Quinton Bell. Waived/Injured WR Tyrie Cleveland, DT Noah Elliss, CB Zech McPhearson. Released CB Greedy Williams and P Ty Zentner.

• The three players who were waived/injured will revert to Injured Reserve after they clear waivers.

• The release of Williams might surprise some folks. He’s a veteran with plenty of experience, but he was clearly behind Josh Jobe on the depth chart and some other young cornerbacks were more worthy of roster spots. And with the release of Zentner, who really struggled on Thursday night, the punter job is Arryn Siposs’s to lose.

• The following Eagles did not practice on Saturday: Britain Covey (hamstring), Fletcher Cox (knee soreness), Mekhi Garner (ankle), Kyron Johnson (appendectomy), Moro Oromo (concussion), Haason Reddick (thumb), Trey Sermon (ankle), Nolan Smith (shoulder), Greg Ward (ankle), Quez Watkins (hamstring).

• A few notes on that injury list: Reddick had thumb surgery but is fully expected to be ready for the opener. Smith said he was taken out of Thursday’s game for precautionary reasons so it’s notable he didn’t participate on Saturday. Johnson’s appendectomy explains why he wasn’t even at Thursday’s game.

• Patrick Johnson (ankle) returned to practice and was already a full participant. He did team drills. Johnson is an interesting name to thing about when you’re compiling your 53-man roster projection.

2. A few depth chart notes:

• It was a tad surprising to see the Eagles throw Justin Evans out there as a first-team safety next to Reed Blankenship to start the day. It doesn't really seem like Evans is a legitimate possibility as a starter, so not exactly sure what to make of it.

• The first-team linebackers were Nakobe Dean and Zach Cunningham to start the day. Those guys looked pretty good together on Thursday against the Browns. Eventually, Christian Elliss rotated in. That starting weakside job might come down to Cunningham vs. Elliss.

• When Landon Dickerson got up after a play hobbling, Sua Opeta replaced him at left guard. But Dickerson didn’t leave practice and returned a bit later.

• Without Cox, Jalen Carter got all the first-team reps in his place.

• Some more reps for James Bradberry in the slot. We also saw Mario Goodrich work as the second-team nickel. Goodrich is the name to watch after the McPhearson Achilles tear.

• A lot of first-team work for running back Kenny Gainwell again.

3. Last week, Darius Slay didn’t seem pleased that Blankenship is running away with the training camp interception title. On Saturday, Slay got back on the board with an impressive interception in coverage on DeVonta Smith.

While the throw from Jalen Hurts was a tad behind Smith on a crossing route, Slay was still able to get a hand in there. The ball then ricocheted off Smith and Slay kept his focus and was able to pick it off before making sure to keep both feet in bounds. Great focus from the veteran Pro Bowl corner.

Slay then carried the ball with him all the way back to the line of scrimmage for the next rep.

4. Hurts just kept throwing to Dallas Goedert during this practice in both 11-on-11s and 7-on-7s. It was a big Goedert day in a summer where he’s had a ton of targets go his way. One play in particular stood out in full-team drills when Hurts found Goedert hiding in plain sight in the middle of the field. He settled into a soft spot in the zone coverage.

5. Then in 7-on-7s, Goedert was still the primary target. Hurts lofted up a beautiful ball over Elliss in coverage to Goedert for a touchdown. It was a perfect pass from No. 1.

But on the very next play, when another pass went Goedert’s way, Blankenship charged and knocked the ball down. Blankenship didn’t have an interception today but he made a play. He seems to make plays every single practice.

6. Another "sack” for Josh Sweat in this practice. This time, he got one as the right defensive end working against Jordan Mailata in the first period. Sweat is having a very strong summer and looks poised for another big year.

As a reminder, Sweat is entering his sixth NFL season and he has gotten better each of his first five years in the NFL. His sack totals just keep rising:

2018: 0 sacks
2019: 4 sacks
2020: 6 sacks
2021: 7.5 sacks
2022: 11 sacks

7. The Eagles’ resident Olympian Devon Allen caught a deep pass from Marcus Mariota for a touchdown in 11-on-11s. It looked like a busted coverage because Allen was wide open down the right sideline for a 35-yard touchdown. But after missing so much time this summer with a calf injury, it was a good sign for him to make a play.

8. The Eagles didn’t do a ton of OL vs. DL 1-on-1s Saturday but there were a few notable reps:

• The highlight rep came from Milton Williams, who bullied Julian Good-Jones with a bullrush into the quarterback.

• Janarius Robinson has had some really good moments in camp but he was absolutely stonewalled by Jordan Mailata today.

• Nice rep from Dennis Kelly working at right tackle against Tarron Jackson, who had a flashy preseason game against the Browns.

• Cam Jurgens won a rep against Big Marvin Wilson, who is back on the team.

9. Saw a couple good plays from Nakobe Dean in the first team period of practice. Although, to be fair, I was watching him closely. On one of the first plays of the day, he had very tight coverage on Gainwell out of the backfield; didn’t give him an inch. A bit later, Dean chased down Hurts on a scramble.

10. While Nolan Smith (shoulder) didn’t practice, he was a very involved spectator. During punt drills, he stood well behind the drill and went through mental reps, mimicking his stance and drop as a member of the punt team.

Siposs, by the way, had an awful shank at one point. But he followed it up with a booming punt on his next try. Might have been the best punt of the summer.

Stupid Observation of the Day: On the very final rep of the day, on a punt drill, rookie Sydney Brown was being blocked by special teams coordinator Michael Clay. It ended up being a real rep with Brown and Clay locking up for several seconds. You don’t often see a coach really get into a rep like that very often. It was a good rep from Brown and it earned a pat on the helmet from Clay when they finally unlocked.

Jalen Hurts watch: How did QB1 fare in Day 13 of Eagles training camp?

Jalen Hurts and the first-team offense were back at it Saturday with a focus on situational football and clock management.

Jalen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles performs a drill during practice at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. on August 6, 2023.

The Eagles were back at it in pads down at the NovaCare Complex Saturday morning following Thursday night's preseason game against the Browns and then a few roster transactions

The day was kept pretty brief, with an emphasis on situational football and clock management toward the end, but like with every practice, we kept a tab on every Jalen Hurts pass.

So here's the play-by-play for QB1 and the first-team offense from Day 13 of training camp:

*Note that the Eagles chose to practice on the field at the far-right end of the NovaCare Complex on Saturday, which left fans and media both with a tougher vantage point, so some plays might not be all that descriptive (the media was only allowed up as far as the 30-yard line by the south end zone).

Set 1

11-on-11s from midfield

Play 1: Hurts begins the day with a quick out to Dallas Goedert.

Play 2: Hurts rifles a pass over the middle to DeVonta Smith, with Darius Slay on him in coverage, but the ball bounces right off Smith's chest and up into the air. Slay and Smith both chase after it, but Slay wins the race and comes down with it. Interception.

Play 3: A run play for Kenny Gainwell.

Play 4: Hurts throws to A.J. Brown, who is waiting left on a shallow sit, but the pass gets tipped by Jalen Carter at the line. Incomplete.

Play 5: Hurts completes a pass over the middle to Goeder for chunk yardage. Offense runs hurry up.

Play 6: On play action, Hurts rolls left and keeps running for a few quick yards.

Play 7: Hurts hits Brown in the flat for a yard, two at most.

Play 8: Hurts takes the snap and Josh Sweat immediately rushes in off the edge to touch him for the "sack." Hurts tries to at least finish the play with a heater of a pass over the middle to Smith, but that ball bounces right off Smith's hands.

• Hurts' line: 3/5, INT, run, "sack."

Set 2

7-on-7s from DEF 40

Play 9: A pump fake and then a check to Brown for short yardage.

Play 10: Hurts threads one between linebackers Nakobe Dean and Zach Cunningham through the middle to Swift for first-down yardage.

Play 11: A shallow post to A.J. Brown for a few quick yards. Looked routine, which it really is at this point.

Play 12: Smith, post over the middle, complete. First down.

Play 13: With the ball spotted at the defense's 25, Hurts tries to loft one over to Brown along the left sideline with James Bradberry on him. Hurts was aiming to put it on Brown's back shoulder, but instead Brown had to turn awkwardly to even get a hand on it. That's about all he could do though. Incomplete.

Play 14: Hurts to Brown on another shallow post. Offense hurries while the ball is moved up to the 20.

Play 15: Hurts zips one to Goedert over Christian Elliss for a score.

Play 16: Running it back from the 17, Hurts goes for Goedert again over the middle at the goal line, but the ball was put behind the tight end, who couldn't fully reach back for it. Incomplete.

• Hurts' line: 6/8 with a TD.

Set 3

11-on-11s with the offense pinned deep in their own territory

*This is where the media's vantage point really gets obscured, making it difficult to gauge general yardage.

• Play 17: A run to Boston Scott to buy some space.

• Play 18: Scott breaks out from the backfield and cuts across the middle. Hurts finds him with space, but Scott couldn't get a hold of it. Incomplete.

• Play 19: Hurts looks, rolls right, then keeps on going for a few yards.

• Play 20: D'Andre Swift takes a run out to the right.

• Play 21: Goedert breaks toward the left sideline and Hurts gets it to him for the completion.

• Play 22: A run to Gainwell gets stood up at the line of scrimmage.

• Play 23: Hurts looks, starts backpedaling left, then rockets a pass in Olamide Zaccheaus' general direction. The ball bounced off someone's helmet and fell incomplete. Weird-looking play.

• Play 24: Hurts to Smith on a shallow post underneath Slay.

• Play 25: A screen to Goedert goes for a yard or two.

• Play 26: Swift gets the handoff and carries the ball wide to the right, then makes a few cuts for a few extra yards to end the set.

• Hurts' line: 3/5 with a run.

Set 4

11-on-11s from OFF 40

Nick Sirianni grabs a megaphone and calls out a scenario: The offense is up 17-13 with 4 minutes left, the defense has two timeouts, a clock-killing scenario basically. So with that in mind...

Play 27: Hurts rolls right and out of bounds. "2 and 11" shouts Sirianni.

Play 28: Hurts runs right and out of bounds again. 3:09 left on the clock.

Play 29: On play action, Hurts takes off right again, this time for a good chunk. 3:00 left.

Play 30: The offense runs a pitch to Gainwell, and that takes the clock down to 2:53 as Sirianni calls "2nd and 5."

Play 31: Gainwell gets the ball again, follows a block, and breaks free into the open field with a clear path straight to the end zone. He lets up on the assumption that the play is over, but Sirianni yells "Unless you hear no mas, it ain't no f***kin' mas, keep running!"

Play 32: Hurts rolls right and hits Gainwell on a check down to end the day.

• Hurts' line: 1/1 with three runs in clock management mode.

• Total line:  13/19 with a TD, INT, and "sack."

Eagles 2023 training camp practice notes, Day 13: The starting CBs make plays

James Bradberry and Darius Slay both came up with interceptions, and Nakobe Dean continues to build at linebacker.

Darius Slay #2 of the Philadelphia Eagles takes the field during practice at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa. on August 6, 2023.

Day 13 of Philadelphia Eagles training camp is in the books, and I was mildly surprised that the team was in full pads a couple of days after they suffered a ton of injuries in their preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. It was a short practice, but as always, we have notes.

• The play of the day was made by Darius Slay, who deflected a Jalen Hurts pass intended for DeVonta Smith. The ball then hit Smith's hands, shot up in the air, and Slay was able to chase it down, make the catch, and toe-tap along the sideline for the INT.

James Bradberry also had an INT off of Marcus Mariota, who continues to struggle. Mariota did at least connect with Devon Allen on a deep ball down the field on what looked like a busted coverage. That's really the first notable thing Allen has done all of camp, by the way.

Nakobe Dean built on his positive showing during the second preseason game, as he stood out today. On a play in which the Eagles' defense was in man coverage, he found himself in coverage out wide against Kenny Gainwell, who ran a go route. The quarterback looked Gainwell's way but didn't pull the trigger because Dean was running stride for stride with him. Dean also had a pass breakup on a bubble screen.

Josh Sweat had an active day. He had a sack, and he also broke up a pass over the middle intended for Grant Calcaterra. Sweat has been dropping into coverage on occasion, and he doesn't look overwhelmed.

Zach Cunningham got a bunch of first-team reps. I think that the competition for the starting linebacker job opposite Dean is down to Cunningham and Christian Elliss.

Nolan Smith didn't practice, but that didn't stop him from taking mental reps... on the punt coverage team, lol. Smith was practicing his kick slide, as he'll likely be protecting the edge on the punt coverage team. I don't think I've ever seen a guy missing practice for the day taking mental reps on his own during a special teams drill.

I think it was also telling that he got hurt on a pass rush in the preseason game Thursday night, but he didn't want to come out of the game so that he could play on the punt return team. Dude breathes football.

Dallas Goedert made a ton of catches today, as usual 🥱. Have I mentioned that he has been uncoverable throughout camp?

• The Eagles announced a bunch of cuts:

  1. They released P Ty Zentner.
  2. They released CB Greedy Williams.
  3. They waived/injured CB Zech McPhearson.
  4. They waived/injured WR Tyrie Cleveland.
  5. They waived/injured DT Noah Elliss.

Zentner was terrible in the preseason game against the Browns. On five punts, none of which were in pin-deep situations, Zentner averaged under 40 yards per punt. He never really gave Arryn Siposs much of a challenge. More on the punters in a moment.

Williams' release isn't a surprise in the slightest, as he had a rough camp.

McPhearson, Cleveland, and Elliss will revert to the Eagles' injured reserve if they clear waivers. Spoiler: All three players will clear waivers.

The Eagles also announced five signings to replace the cut players above:

  1. DT Robert Cooper
  2. DT Marvin Wilson
  3. DT Caleb Sanders
  4. LB Tyreek Maddox-Williams
  5. LB Quinton Bell

Those five guys have almost no chance of making the roster, obviously.

• A lot of guys missed practice. We'll go alphabetical order here:

  1. WR Britain Covey (hamstring)
  2. DT Fletcher Cox (knee soreness)
  3. CB Mekhi Garner (ankle)
  4. EDGE Kyron Johnson (appendectomy)
  5. iDL Moro Ojomo (concussion)
  6. EDGE Haason Reddick (thumb)
  7. RB Trey Sermon (ankle)
  8. EDGE Nolan Smith (shoulder)
  9. WR Greg Ward (ankle)
  10. WR Quez Watkins (hamstring)
That is the longest injury report of camp, by far.

• Siposs had at least one bad shank today. Just because Zentner was released doesn't mean that Siposs has definitively won the Eagles' punter job. The team could still add a punter via waivers after teams around the league make final cuts.

Please no more Sipozz

Sounds like there was an old-fashioned training camp dust-up at practice today.  Kelce is the ultimate Eagle teammate.

The second joint practice between the Eagles and Colts came to an early end on Tuesday.

According to reporters in attendance, it had already been a chippy day when Eagles center Jason Kelce took offense to a hit that Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin put on running back Kenneth Gainwell. Kelce laid Franklin out at the end of a play and that touched off a brawl between both teams.

Once the two sides were separated and the situation calmed down, the decision was made to call off the rest of practice. That also brought an official end to Eagles training camp.

The two teams are slated to play in Philadelphia on Thursday night and all involved will be trying to keep emotions under better control in that game.
