This season may come down to the wire but Howie surely has another ace in the hole.

he’s usually got something up his sleeve

Bumping this because I forgot about this signing last year.

How much of an impact do you think he will have and do you think this means they won't draft a CB or S early?

I think he’s going to get a good opportunity to play and I think he’s good enough to be a starter. He’s been out a year though so that’s the risk here but I think he’s a good player.

I think Rodgers will get an opportunity to start outside. We’ll see how being off a year affects him, could use it as a chip on his shoulder and play his arse off, but he also may have taken a year vacation…

Howie is doing what a good GM should do, use FA to ensure there are no glaring holes on the roster going into the draft, so they can draft BPA and value. If there’s a cb or safety they like early in the draft and see it as a valuable pick, I’m sure they’ll take them.

I like his odds at the slot position.

Yeah, I think the secondary will be Slay, Ringo, Rodgers, Reed and CJGJ. Backups: Ricks, Jobe, McPhearson, Brown and a rookie.

I don't think he has ever played slot and is soley an outside corner. Maybe they move Bradberry into the slot

I could see that… Bradberry can’t play on the outside anymore and maybe they can get something out of him at slot?

For the millionth time Bradberry cannot play in the slot. He's even worse than he is on the outside. BBQ 🐔

He'll replace Maddox.

If you are basing that compared to his play in 2022 on the outside, you may have point, but if you are using just his play last year for reference, the move to slot wasn't worse (it was actually probably better). With that combined with less preparation (camp / preseason) for him to actually fill in there, it wasn't as bad as you are making it. What made things worse was the guys we used to replace Bradberry outside weren't quite up to the task last season either.

I'm less concerned about having Bradberry play slot than I am in his declining play outside last season. I'm not going to rule out the possibility, though, that he rebounds and plays better than he did last season.

This is for all the people questioning whether or not Rodgers has any prior experience playing the slot ... I found this:

Quote

Rodgers is mainly an outside corner. He played 948 defensive snaps in his three years in Indianapolis, and according to PFF only 31 of them were in the slot.

Bradberry was getting cooked in the slot. He does not have slot corner ability at all. He doesn't have the quicks to stay with slot guys. He's an outside corner only now albeit one that get cooked on the outside too.

Crazy how he completely fell off a cliff from 2022 to 2023.  Thank goodness we have some younger outside CBs that showed potential.  Now just need to add a young slot CB (draft) that we'd have under control on a cheap rookie contract for the next 4 years.

Yeah... CJGJ can give you some decent reps from the slot too. Versatile dude.

forgot about mcphearson, he could be a decent player this year

His best reps by far are in the slot imo. I'm almost certain he'd be a top 3 slot corner tomorrow. Unfortunately he's nowhere near that good at safety and has some pretty clear flaws, his picks more make up for those.

I definitely wish he was a more balanced player.

The sad truth is, if we played Blank and Epps in the Super Bowl at S and CJGJ at slot rather than Maddox the chance the defense looks better and we win the SB isn't low, even with the pass rush being screwed by the field.

Never heard of the guy before this year and when the new year is finished, we won't hear of him again. Another "wish signee with some baggage that Rosebud likes to puff up.
