Minor upgrade. Still not sure why we didn’t sign Gillikin. He is clearly the best available. Maybe he struggles with holding and they are worried it might affect Elliot.

Very important to keep the kicker that's a killer on 61 yard field goals happy.   That's a weapon.

Hard to understand why this took so long, particularly after the Super Bowl debacle.

Yay - I’ll take it. Think Mann is a (minor) upgrade. Sippos has been to inconsistent for too long now.

I do preferred Gilikin to Mann but we knew the Eagles preferred Mann. At least they have made a move here.

Yeah agreed. That’s the main reason I can think not to sign the objectively better punter.

Kind of concerned that they waited this long to make any move. Elliott so far has been a major reason why the Eagles are 2-0. Shouldn’t be messing with his flow at this point.

Don't understand why they waited 2 games before making the change.  Mann was on the street all this time and could be signed before the season started.  Siposs got extra 2 games to keep his job, but failed the criteria, I guess.  Mann can kickoff too, which may be a plus.  How well he holds for FG is more important though.

I'm fairly certain that last punt was the final straw. No way he should have punted a returnable ball there. Another clear choke that Ringo bailed him out on.  The guy us terrible under pressure which is why Mann who only punted slightly better is still a big upgrade.   Gilikin didn't kick well in the preseason apparently and obviously didn't impress in his workout with the team.

My stab at their think is that they weren't ever really convinced in Siposs as the punter going into the season but they valued the comfort Elliot had with him as holder. As a result of that, they  thought they'd give him a shot to prove himself first (over the first 2 games). This will be the key driver with the things below supporting it

1. They knew the schedule and that they had an extended break coming up after Week 2 where if Siposs didn't perform well (which he hasn't), they could make the switch and give Elliot time to work with the new holder

2. Every other team has their punter job filled. Once Gilikin and Mann got released, they were likely still going to be available after Week 2, so need to rush into it to start the season, especially after the Steelers held onto Mann initially (their preferred option) which would have shortened the practice available to Elliot / Mann ahead of Game 1

3. Doing it this way, gives them more games to keep an extra roster spot. Elevation from PS is limited to 3 games. They got 2 games from Siposs and can get another 3 from Mann which means elevation of punter to 53 can be put off till Week 6. Injuries will happen and they will get more info on their younger players (Ricks, Goodrich etc) to see where best to free the spot from.

Whomever the ragged azzed Punter is or will be, he better be able to hold for Jake.

Jake is a weapon.

This is the biggest concern... holders are not interchangeable these guys get in a rhythm in the offseason and swapping them out can be disastrous. Guess better early than later. Just hope Mann is the guy and it's not musical chairs for Elliot.

Better is also in the eye of the beholder sometimes.  Do you want a guy who is more consistent, or who has to potential for the bigger leg, but shanks a few every now and then?

What I'm wondering is once a player is released from the practice squad, if he is signed later can he be elevated the maximum number of times again. Howie's been doing some unusual things with the PS this season and he may be trying to keep a P off the 53 as long as possible.

I am now very curious about the answer.

Likely planned. Remember, you can only elevate three times per season. Having Siposs handle two or three (he usually punts better in the fall) gets him a total of around 5 games he doesn't need a punter on the roster.

The saddest thing about this is that we had the person who is now probably the best punter in the NFL on our roster for three years. List of largest punt averages (above minimum total) in NFL history:

Yeah, I found that little nugget. I really didn't want to find that.

Unfortunately for Siposs he isn't very good. Even when he played in the AFL he was known for having a long but inaccurate kick and didn't live up to expectations (even though he was a late draft pick).

The Eagles aren't going to spend money at the position and the unfortunate thing last season is he was still a better option than Kern who replaced him when he was injured. Maybe they wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt if he wasn't completely healthy heading into the SB and see if he could be serviceable.
