Without this preferential treatment, many Catholic dioceses would have been ineligible because — between their head offices, parishes and other affiliates — their employees exceed the 500-person cap. "The government grants special dispensation, and that creates a kind of structural favoritism," said Micah Schwartzman, a University of Virginia law professor specializing in constitutional issues and religion who has studied the Paycheck Protection Program. "And that favoritism was worth billions of dollars."

And I assure you, when it comes to the Catholic Church, the benefits the Catholic Church gives YOUR government outweigh the benefits it receives. By BILLIONS of dollars. The real question is, why do my donations to my church, go to paying and subsidizing people whose job it is to further advance their government? Why is their government dependent on my church? I don’t give a F about what tangential benefits the Catholic Church gives anyone. The thing about your donations is that you can chose not to donate them. I can’t do that with taxes. Also the law is pretty clear on this.

The thing about your donations is that you can chose not to donate them. I can’t do that with taxes. Also the law is pretty clear on this. You can go ahead and tax the Church. By doing so, you’ll also need to tax all other non-profit organizations. The money collected from those taxes will only be a drop in the bucket compared to what the government saves thanks to the Church and other non-profits. The Church and other non-profits will then need to cut spending on charitable safety nets, schools, healthcare facilities, etc. Guess what happens next? The government takes on the additional burden of the cuts from the Church, non-profits, etc and raises YOUR taxes or further goes into debt. So go ahead, start taxing the Church and other non-profits and see how that works out for you. And by the way, how much tax do you think you will collect from taxing the church and non profits? Have you guys ever owned a business? Businesses are taxed on their profits so if a business does not make a profit, how much tax does that business pay? That’s right, they don’t. So in reality the only tax you could potentially collect is some form of property taxes and maybe some minor corporate filing fees. Maybe some additional payroll taxes from the non-lay people employees but since many non-profits and Churches have volunteers or folks working a near-minimum wages, you won’t get much there either.
July 12, 20205 yr Author Either you are hard headed, dumb, or so indoctrinated. I don't care what the church does or how much money they save or how many people they employee. My tax money should NOT be bailing out a religious organization of any kind, period. The church has how any BILLIONS of dollars in rainy day funds or properties/land they could sell, or art they have stored away. Well I guess the rainy day fund is being used to pay victim's of rape at the of potentially billions and taxpayers have to pay to re supply the fund. Just like taxpayers should NOT be paying victims to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars because of misuse of police force. See how that works? If the govt would have left churches alone to conduct mass, youd cry But instead they shut them down and now rightfully owe them money, so you cry Either way you cry because you have it out for one of the most charitable (if not THE most) organizations on the entire planet Earth. Maybe the middle schooler could help you set up online streaming church service like most other churches did/do. Ways to continue donating could be broadcast and everything. It’s obvious some folks in here never ran a business nor do they understand US tax code. As far as the Catholic Church goes, it operates as a non-profit organization. They wouldn’t get much tax from it, even if they tried. All the Catholic Church would need to do is setup various non-profit organizations/businesses within it. (Some already operate that way and don’t even use the Church exemption). It would create additional accounting costs for the Church but that’s more than likely what they would do if they lost their "Church tax exempt status”. It’s really a non-argument when it comes to the Catholic Church but some far left liberals seem to like to come up with their own set of false, (conspiracy theory type) memes.
