Posted July 13, 20204 yr Top 3 Backup Philadelphia Eagles Players So for the next top 3 discussion, I was wondering if I could get everyone's opinions about their Top 3 Favorite backup players for the Eagles. These are players that took over a few times for the starter and ended up having a lot of success. Some of these players might have become starters for the team for a short time. So what are your favorite backup players for the Philadelphia Eagles since you've been a fan?
July 13, 20204 yr Foles is an obvious choice. Big V held up well when Peters went down mid season in 2017. Here’s a name that goes back a ways. Britt Hager.

July 14, 20204 yr A lot if times it's a young guy making his start: Randall Cunningham started out when Buddy Ryan played him on 3rd downs, replacing Jaws. Brian Westbrook was the backup to Duce Staley. Wentz was 3rd string QB until they traded Bradford and he leapfrogged Chase Daniel. I'm sure there's a whole bunch of others like that. The entire Philly Special play: direct snap to Clement, toss to Burton, throw to Foles. All backups.
July 14, 20204 yr Nick Foles will be on every ones list for sure so Ill keep him out of it. Jeff Garcia was good, even AJ Feeley made a nice run. Jim McMahon even. But Ill stay away from the QB position since its too easy. Backups that were good, never stay backups for long so its a tough list to name a guy who stayed as a backup. most were starters at some point. So here we go. 1- Ill start with the Greatest Cornerback groups ever in the NFL (2002) Starters: Bobby Taylor, Troy Vincent and Al Harris BACKUPS Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown. 2- Same era you have to look at the RBs which someone mentioned above. Buckhalter and Westbrook with Staley as the starter. 3- I will keep in the era again since those teams just always had good depth. LB Ike Reese. LB was never a strong area for the Eagles after the 90's but Ike was a very good backup and contributed greatly on ST. Other players you can mention that did the same were Sproles and Brian Mitchell. Non of them thrived as starters but were key in backup roles and ST play How can we forget the great Bobby Jones.....................oops, wrong sport:)
July 15, 20204 yr I’m going to list 3 other than Foles, since that one is an obvious. 1. Buckhalter. Dude was an effective #2 back despite the injuries he dealt with. Always enjoyed his running style. 2. Ike Reese. Always a great special teamer, never locked down a starting job but always held it down when he was called on as a backup LB. 3. Mike Caldwell. I know he started for one year, but was a backup for 3 of his 4 seasons as an eagle. Always thought he was solid.

July 16, 20204 yr Are we counting Sproles? He's def worth a mention altho most at this pt remember his injury plagued over utilized final 2 yrs And Avant and Buckhalter are good mentions from previous posters. I'll also shout out Joselio Hansen
July 16, 20204 yr hard to say just 3. I think Nick Foles should be everyone's #1 answer, but that's just my opinion. I also concur about Buckhalter, but both Westbrook and then Lesean McCoy were also both backups at one point. I also loved Otis Smith and was ticked that we let him walk. He still had his whole career ahead of him and was a very solid cornerback in the league for years to come.

I feel like if a player started for at least 50% of his seasons as an Eagle he can’t really be in the pool of "great backups”. Otherwise you have to start looking at guys like Sheldon Brown because he was technically a "backup” at first.
