Did Philadelphia make the same mistake twice?

Did the Philadelphia Eagles franchise, fans, and media make the same mistake twice? Is Jalen Hurts regressing just as Carson Wentz did a few years ago?

A caller, Ken, on today's 94WIP Midday Show made the point that this is the exact same situation and Joe Giglio agreed.

"We don't want to compare this to Carson Wentz, I get it, but everything about this is the same as Carson Wentz," the caller said on Tuesday. "The quarterback is killing the football team. Every week he makes decisions with the football that make you just sit there with your mouth agate. And then you get the section of the fan base that will call up and reflexively defend him and blame everyone else. Everything about this! You could play tapes from 2020 shows on a loop and if you didn't mention the guys name, they would be the exact same conversation."

"I agree, it's eerily similar," Giglio said. "Eerily. The way we talk about it is. Because people didn't want to recognize it was going to the wrong. Ken's point is, people ignored the truth."

After a marvelous 2022 season where he finished second in the MVP race and lost in the Super Bowl, Jalen Hurts signed a $255 million contract extension with the Eagles in April.

This season, Hurts has been playing through a knee injury and has 17 turnovers (12 INT, 5 FL) in 14 games. The Eagles are 10-4, but have lost their last three games and Hurts has not played well over that stretch.

The Eagles signed Wentz to a $128 million contract extension in June of 2019, after the team won the Super Bowl in 2018. Wentz was recovering from a December 2017 ACL tear and had pedestrian 2018 regular season where he went 5-6 as a starter in 11 games. Wentz was never the same and traded to the Colts in March of 2021.

No, this isn't the same.....the vast majority of Hurts issues evolve from the coordinator and the idiotic play calling.

Yes, he's made some poor decisions and has turned the ball over more.

But when opposing defenses have stated how predictable the eagles offense is and the lack of diversity in formations, lack of movement, and stupid play calls, players, especially QBs will try to do too much........Hurts has been holding the ball to long, is not going thru his progressions fast enough, and is trying to force big plays.

The fans and media, local and national, have seen an offense that is totally stagnant with a bunch of talented skill players.  A dynamic RB who gets the ball 10 times a game.  A top 5 TE who isn't targeted in the red zone.  3rd WRs with 15 total receptions in 14 games.

Spreading the ball around is critical in today's NFL......but that has to be a combination of play calling and QB decisions.  Right now the play calling is atrocious and Hurts is looking at Brown and Smith almost exclusively......and Watkins is undependable and Zaccheus is underused.  Swift and Scott are almost absent in the passing game.

These issues have developed for Hurts.....issues that can be solved with some creativity and taking some pressure off of Hurts by some playcalling diversity as to where the ball is going.

When offenses become stagnant, QB will force things to make something happen, or drag out plays to not make mistakes....their vision of the field begins to narrow and decision making slows.  They all do it.......because the vast majority of their game is mental.....they start to think too much and depend less on instinct.

Right now, Brian Johnson is a huge problem for Hurts.  And the eagles better start recognizing it because the more a QB develops bad habits, the harder it is to correct them.

When Hurts questioned the teams commitment, I think he was referring to Johnson.....and when he said the improvements begin with him, he was trying to show his leadership.  In reality, the improvements begin with the offensive coordinator.....in collaboration with the QB.....right now, I don't think that is happening.  And Sirianni is the one who has to make that happen.

The unqualified OC is running a high school scheme.  He will be gone from that position in the off season, probably moved to another job as he is pals with Hurts.
