NFL Rumors: Major offseason changes coming for the Eagles?

Just a month ago, the Eagles had defeated the Bills in overtime, improved to 10-1 firmly atop the NFC, and Jalen Hurts was the MVP favorite.

To put it lightly, things have been disastrous ever since. Philadelphia has dropped four of their last five games, including losses to the Drew Lock-led Seahawks and 3-12 Cardinals, and frustration is starting to boil over.

Although the Eagles have clinched three straight postseason appearances under Nick Sirianni, signs of locker-room dissension have called the fiery coach’s future into question. There may be some substance behind that speculation.

NFL Insider Josina Anderson dropped a nugget on Twitter/X this morning, hinting that significant changes could be coming for an NFC East team.

Regarding necessary changes, Washington parting ways with Ron Rivera comes to mind first. I personally wouldn’t classify that as ‘unexpected’ — the Commanders should’ve moved on from him years ago. Would the Giants give Brian Daboll the boot? Not likely.

Perhaps Washington will pursue Russell Wilson next spring; they don’t seem all that confident in Sam Howell as their franchise quarterback.

The most unexpected development would be Philadelphia firing the man who led them to a Super Bowl just one year prior.

In three seasons as head coach, Nick Sirianni holds a 34-16 record — the best winning percentage in team history. But his team has a -42 point differential since starting 10-1 (worst in the NFL), and Jeffrey Lurie has shown the willingness to make sudden changes when things go south.

Hell, Doug Pederson was dismissed three years after bringing the city its first Super Bowl title.

Can team morale be repaired between now and the offseason? Of course. The Eagles clinched their playoff spot two weeks ago; anything can happen once you’re in the dance. There’s also a chance Josina Anderson isn’t referring to Philly and nobody’s job is in jeopardy.

In either case, Sirianni and his staff have limited time to right the ship.

I don’t think that tweet from Anderson is related to Sirianni. I’m not even sure it’s related to us to be honest. It’s a ridiculous tweet to be honest. It offers nothing and any move that is made by an NFC East team could easily be regarded as a surprise for Anderson.

We are in for a rebuild.  Older vets should be released or traded for whatever draft picks we can get for them if Howie and Lurie face the reality.

BG & Kelce retire, Cox plays another year or 2 probably for a new team.

Bradbury allowed to leave, maybe we can get a 4 or 5 for Slay.  Maybe nothing due to his contract.  All the LBs gone except for the Ga guy.  Maddox probably released as no one will trade for his contract.  Someone might give a 3 for Sweat, maybe a 4 for Reddick.  Keep Swift and dump all the other RBs.

We will add 8-12 new players on defense.

I would burn it down, get as many draft picks as possible, keep the Oline in tact to go with Hurts, Swift and the big 3 on offense, add a good RG in the 3rd round, a back up interior Olineman in the 5th, maybe an OT in the 6th, a RB mid to late and draft as many defenders as possible.  We need more picks, a lot more

Regarding Bradberry, cutting him would trigger a dead money cap hit of $17.2M (that drops to $4.7M if we use a post June 1 designation).  Trading him reduces those values minimally ($16M pre June 1, $3.5M post June 1).  I could definitely see them moving on from him (using post June 1 designation) considering how far his play dropped off in 2023.

But Slay on the other hand, we'd incur a $35M dead money hit to the cap if we cut him (pre June 1 ... $11M post June 1) ... trading him those values are $34M and $10M, respectively.  Seems almost certain he is here for at least another year.

The most obvious move seems to be a new DC (guess we will see how the defense comes together  ... or not ... these next couple of games).  Sirianni really needs to add a seasoned OC as well but gut says he'll want to stick with BJ (whether Lurie and Roseman intervene there as they did with Doug we shall see).

Howie is really good at 2 things.  Since he can't draft worth a damn he is fortunately good at scouring the league for available talent and signing it cheaply for a year or acquiring at wholesale prices and trading and getting retail.  If he would just do that and manage the cap he would be an excellent GM.  But he insists on controlling the draft and he is really bad at evaluating college talent.  Number 2 he has artfully managed the cap, but at some point in time you can't kick the can down the road any further.  He has continued to surprise many including myself how long he can do this.  But now as you just pointed out, the end of the road is approaching.  When that happens at the time your older core vets fade and retire, where we are now, you have to pay the piper.

Yes Bradburry will be a post June 1 designated cut and yes we are stuck with Slay another year, but he has been the best of a bad back 7 so that isn't a problem.  What money will accelerate onto the cap when BG retires after the playoffs and maybe Kelce.  Cox has another year or 2 in him although maybe for another team.  We will only offer him up to a year, if anything, and he may get a 2 year offer elsewhere and with the way things are going with management's interference into game planning and schemes he may not want to come back.

And therein lies an important issue.  Will vets around the league still want to play here?  Players all talk to each other weekly and the word is out in the NFL community what is happening here with regards to management's fingers over everything.  That is not well received so we will have to see how many vets leave and how many are willing to sign 1 year minimum deals.  That deal is tempting to join a winning team and a chance for a ring but that window has now closed.
