Eagles’ Howie Roseman receives lofty praise from NFL agents: ’He knows how to put teams together’

Howie Roseman is considered the smartest general manager in the NFL, according to an agent poll recently conducted by The Athletic.

The outlet polled 30 NFL agents to get insight on the offseason. The Eagles general manager received the most votes (5) for being the smartest decision-maker in the NFL.

"If I was gonna go into the lab and build a GM, it’s a guy that can deal with the media, a guy that knows personnel and a guy that knows money,” one agent told The Athletic. "Those are the three things. Howie Roseman is a guy who I think is very good with the media from what I can tell. I know that he knows the money game very well. And I’ve known him for 15-18 years and he’s worked incredibly hard to learn football and how to evaluate to the point now where he’s really good. I give him a lot of credit that he can handle all three parts of the job.”

"He knows how to put teams together,” another agent said. "And he’s working with a limited amount in terms of the cap. He knows how to maneuver and get players that he feels like will fit the scheme even if he doesn’t have to pay them top dollar. He’s very smart in terms of chess moves. I’m not a huge fan. I will say that, as well. But he knows what he’s doing in terms of putting things together.”

Outside of the 2015 season, Roseman has been the top decision-maker in the Eagles’ front office since 2010. During that span, he has drafted All-Pros like center Jason Kelce and right tackle Lane Johnson, identified a franchise quarterback in Carson Wentz and won the Eagles’ first Super Bowl title.

Despite those accolades and praise from agents, the poll wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for Roseman, who received two votes for being among the least trustworthy general managers in the league.

"Just look at his career path,” an agent said. "He’s pretty much pulled the rug out from underneath everybody that ever got close to him in Philly. And when he does, Howie’s gonna do his best for Howie. He’s proven that year after year after year.”

Roseman was also criticized by one agent for claiming that the team didn’t have a lot of guaranteed money to shell out during the offseason. That claim was made shortly before Roseman traded for cornerback Darius Slay and extended his contract to give him $26 million in guaranteed cash.

Still, something is clearly working for Roseman, as he has led the team to three straight playoff runs and a Lombardi Trophy with Eagles coach Doug Pederson at the helm.

No. He was here with Reid but Andy ran the show.Chip got full control for a year as well. I'm focusing on his 2nd chance.

Seems fair really! And he seemed to learn a lot during his time in the store cupboard.

As good as he is at cap management and recognizing undervalued veteran talent, he's that bad at the draft. Loves tiny, skinny guys, like it's baseball.  Not until this draft, after 20 years in the league, does he understand that he needs speed at the skill positions, specifically WR.  You must have speed to provide the #1 essential element to any offense in football, hockey, soccer, lacrosse, any sport that involves advancing a ball into an offensive zone.  YOU MUST CREATE SPACE THAT OTHERS FILL.  Worst WRs by far in the league last year.  Drafts a 5th round WR in Whiteside that has no speed and couldn't get open in the Pac 12.  Drafted him in the 2nd round because he's good at jump balls?  Two years ago worst group of RBs in the league.  Our leading rusher didn't even play the end of the year, was released and is out of the league.  I could on and on and on but why bother.  This past draft hopefully was better.  Two good 4th round picks.  We'll see about the others.

I thought Kelce was a Reid pick and Johnson was a Kelly pick?

I'm pretty sure Johnson wasn't a Kelly pick but I could be wrong.

That Johnson pick was very interesting in retrospect.  Oakland had pick 3, one in front of us.  They didn't want it and waited until the clock had just about run out.  it may still have been 15 minutes that year, don't remember, but with about two minutes to go Miami moved all the way up from 15 I think for just a 2nd rounder, which is about 50 cents on the dollar.  They took the DE that Chip wanted.  I think from Oregon.  He busted.  We settled for the 3rd OT in the first 4 picks with Johnson, by far the best.  Do we win the SB if Miami doesn't trade up last second and take the player Chip wanted? Would we have drafted him over Lane?

Kelce was drafted in 2011, before Lurie "streamlined the process” after looking at him voluminous notes. Kelce was more on Reid. Johnson is a bit tougher. Many will say because that was Kelly’s first year, that that was all on Howie, however, I have a very hard time believing they went through all they did to get an interview with Kelly, sat on the threshold of signing Bradley, only to dump Bradley the minute Kelly changed his mind, and then told Kelly to sit down and be quiet. I have little doubt Kelly had influence in the ‘13 and ‘14 drafts.

I'd have to agree with the bolded on Kelly.  I have little doubt he had a huge influence on personnel even before being handed the official role his final year.  But I do think he and Howie may not have agreed on all of the moves the latter made hence the butting heads and power struggle.  Having said that, Lane seems like the kind of pick Howie would have made with or without Kelly's influence - so yeah, really tough to tell who ultimately made the call.
