grand canyon trip is next week. i'll be sure to take a few pics of myself looking like a toolbag standing in front of the grand canyon & sheet. :flex:

Visibility appears to be pretty bad due to the wildfires.  Smoke from fires in Oregon has been in the upper atmosphere.

If the smoke generally clears, the sunrises and sunsets could be spectacular.

Grand Canyon NPS on Twitter and Instagram are pretty good at posting regular updates on conditions, with pictures for a visual aid.

My son, 13, wants to visit Philly for the weekend. Where would the best area to stay for a weekend? Will do the usual tourist stuff and eat cheesesteaks all weekend.

Eagle sitting on the beach this morning.  Took this from my front door.

Where are you coming from, and what is your mode of transportation to Philly?

DC and either Amtrek or Car

If you're doing regular tourist stuff, and arriving taking the train up, Center City may be the best bet.  Would you be getting off at 30th Street Station?  And be spending time in Old City, where Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell and Christ Church and all are?  If so, Center City is right in between the two, and you can really walk everywhere from there.  There wouldn't be much of a reason to go out into many other neighborhoods that you can't walk to.

Hope to one day go on an Amtrak heard they are something else!

driving through az....feels just like nepa.

Can you get any closer to the edge, you know, to get us a good straight down shot to see how far down it is?

That trail on the right of the picture, in the distance, is the Plateau Point Trail.

You are not close to the head of the Bright Angel Trail.  Don;t forget about those pictographs underneath the ledge immediately after the first tunnel that I mentioned.

The formation in dead center of your picture is the Battleship.  It's called that because from farther down in the canyon, it looks like the bridge of a battleship sailing by you.

2 hikers struck by lightning the day before we were there...monsoons every day & flash flood warnings in the area. we didn't venture beyond the main observation areas near the visitors center.

good thing because a t-storm popped up shortly after.  amazing views from every angle though.  the sheer size is incredible.  that's what she said.

air travel sucks, btw. so much sitting around...waiting...sitting some more...flight delayed...would have missed connecting flight but that wound up being delayed as well. boarded plane....sat in a hot plane for 45 min. then they took us off the plane for a mechanical issue....then back on to sit some more before we finally took off.

yeah...air travel sucks.  i don't like driving long distances either though...so it's a necessity.  ✈️<_<

Booked a Maine bear hunt for Sept 2022 last night. Hoping covid is just a memory by then

Has anyone crossed into Canada yet?  I am planning to go to my family cottage there this summer, but am hoping that someone can tell me of the experience, not me telling everyone else.

Not personally, but my colleague just arrived there from Portugal successfully. Flew into Pearson. Said it was a 3 hour customs wait. He is vaccinated so no need to quarantine or anything.

I'm hoping to go over by car.  I'm vaccinated as well, so I know there's no quarantine.  I know to get that Covid test before arriving.  I am worried about getting a Covid test in Canada in order to get back into the US.  That could be the biggest issue at the moment.

when they re-opened I read something about needing to present a valid quarantine plan, just in case you or someone you are with gets a positive result at the border test. Or if you get sick while there.

I dont know what a valid quarantine plan is but apparently this is something you will have to tell or show border agents.

My plan is to just stay at the family cottage.  I guess I would need to know what to do with food, but I can pick up some food at a fast food place before crossing over.

The biggest obstacle, ironically, seems to be coming back into the US.  A negative test is needed to enter the US.  Unless I'm reading things wrong on Canadian pharmacy websites, tests for outbound travelers (by air) is $200.

If you ever want a small city worth a weekend exploring, I recommend Providence, Rhode Island.  I was just there today, and there are great parks along the river and bay.  There's plenty of good restaurants, and the Italian food is generally very good.  College Hill is a great neighborhood with a ton of old houses and buildings; Benefit Street may have the best collection of preserved colonial houses in the US.  Plus, Brown University is in College Hill, and it's a great campus to walk around.

I got black out drunk during the eagles 2012 season opener in Providence, RI. I think they played the Panthers maybe?

They beat the Browns 17-16 in the opener on their way to a stellar 4-12 season.

I just remember we were looking like hot garbage, losing at one point, and I woke up from drunkenly passing out and somehow we were leading or maybe took the lead to win. I just know it was the only Eagles game I've ever gotten hammered during.

anyone here ever been to iceland?  we have some friends hoping to go next year & asking the wife & i if we'd like to come along.
