Where's the farthest anyone has driven?

The farthest I've driven myself is to Fort Lauderdale, from northern Delaware.

The farthest I've driven with my family is to western Kentucky (actually Mayfield, where the tornado hit) from northern Delaware to see family.

I've also taken a bus trip with a youth group to St. Louis.

I've driven to Colorado 4 times to hunt (from central PA).  Also did a road trip out west where we went white water rafting on the Colorado River, then headed southwest through Ouray, Colorado on our way down to the Grand Canyon.  Drove home from there - I think that was over 30 hours.

KSQ PA to Moulton Iowa.  Approx. 1050 miles 15 hours and one of the only days of my life that I was awake for over 24 hours.  We left 9:30 at night and arrived the next afternoon less the 1 hr. time change.  Thankfully, I flew home.  Helped a friend move out there.  There's always a breeze there.

Moving to the Bay Area and back. Syracuse on I-90 which runs into Cleveland and I think just south of Chicago it splits to I-80 (I-80 extends to NYC). I continued on that to Omaha which was my first stop. The next day took 80 to the Wyoming/Colorado border and split southwest straight to Brighton, CO for 5 days to stay with a roommate from college. Left there and went north/west to get back to 80, and took that straight to the East Bay. I think the Denver-San Fran/Oakland/San Jose leg is something like 1300 miles/19 hours on google, so that leg going west was my longest single stint. Then when I moved back East I left Bay Area at midnight and arrived in Denver around like 6pm. Then drove next morning to Des Moines (stayed with a different college roommate for 3 days), then third leg was Des Moines back to NY

It was an old picture from a flight from Iceland.  It was actually taken in June!  Northern Quebec was also covered in snow at that time as well.  I was going through some old pictures and remembered that I had flown over Greenland, so I figured it would be worth posting.

Very cool.  I hope you were zoomed in on that mountain, otherwise that’s a view I’m not sure I’d want outside a plane window 🤣

Yes! Most of Greenland was cloudy as we flew over, and that was a little, sliver of a break in the clouds.  I was able to zoom in in just enough time.

I would like to visit Greenland for real some time.  I think the easiest way to get there commercially is from Iceland, so it would take quite a bit of money to visit.

Anyone been to Glacier National Park in Montana?  The wife wants to check that out this summer - curious what area we should stay in and what parts of the park are must see.

I've never been there, but Going-to-the-Sun Road is supposed to be good.  I'm guessing it is similar to Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park ,which goes through.  So Glacier NP would be more of a pass-through/round-trip park like Rocky Mountain NP, as opposed to a village park like Grand Canyon or Yosemite.

Kalispell is the main town in that area.  They are actually getting a minor league baseball team.  It's supposed to be a pretty decent place, for a small town and isolated area.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm going to Anchorage for Memorial Day weekend.  Any suggestions for that city and area?

End of April I'm making my first trip back home to the US since October 2019.  Been waaaaaaay too long.

We will be down in SE North Carolina for a few weeks pre retirement scouting.  Couple friends and some family will join for chunks of the visit.

Yes, visited oh, maybe 13 years ago. Memory isn't what it was.

We stayed in the park near Many Glacier for I think 2 nights.

Flew into Kalispell.

It was the start of a wider trip which took in Yellowstone and ended up in Jackson Hole.

Did some good hiking from our lodging and took a boat over lake Macdonald. The water was super clear.

Going to the Sun Road is obviously a must do.

Wasn't too busy, we were there early September.

Definitely grizzly ( and moose !), territory.

Wife thought Glacier was better than Yellowstone.

Sure you will have a great trip if you go 👍

We are booked for 10 days in Ireland in May. 2 in Dublin, 3 in Northern Ireland - a few miles from Giants Causeway and 5 in Connemara at the Killary Lodge

https://killaryadventure.com/killary-lodge/en/killary-lodge-luxury-holiday-home

We just got back on Sunday!  It was incredible, and our trips have some overlapping.  We flew into Shannon, stayed in Galway for 4 nights, drove to Cork and stayed at the Blarney Castle hotel for 3 nights, drove to Kilkenny Castle for the day, then finished up in Dublin for 2 nights.  The drive from Blarney to Kilkenny was amazing.  We drove through snowcapped mountains almost the entire drive, and it was worth it to stop and see the Kilkenny Castle.  Driving in Dublin sucks.  There is nowhere to park, I lost my parking garage ticket for our hotel, and I almost killed me, my wife, and 7 month old a few times, but we remained unscathed.  We did the "Skip the Lines" tour of the Jameson distillery and the Guinness Storehouse.  The distillery tour was actually fascinating, and the Guinness storehouse felt like we were walking into an Eagles playoff game.  It's absurd and it feels like it expands over half of Dublin.

Blarney was our favorite.  We stayed within walking distance of the castle grounds at the Blarney Castle Hotel, and it felt like we were staying in a sleepy mountain town in the middle of Ireland.  Galway was incredible also - we stayed right on the water at the Connemara Coast hotel which was a few miles west of downtown Galway.  We did the Cliffs of Moher on a day trip from there, and my wife got motion sickness in the bus and puked.  It was hilarious!  Then she got better and we had a great day.  Best restaurant we ate at the entire trip and was recommended by everyone in Galway:

It was the most incredible trip I've ever been on, but I would not suggest bringing the newborn.  Ours was an angel the entire time, but she still had needs every 5 minutes, so we had to tame ourselves quite a bit during the trip.  That didn't stop us from having about 50 shots of Jameson and Guinness everywhere we went, but we were always in bed by 10.

Looks amazing.  Planning to go there next spring for my 40th.  My wife has been several times for work, but always on bus tours for the entirety.  She's been hesitant to rent a car and do it ourselves - you're saying it wasn't too bad minus driving in Dublin?

Dublin was by far the worst.  I legitimately thought we were gonna miss our flight back to the US bc I missed a turn coming out of the parking garage and I ended up on the other side of the city.  Cork was also not fun to drive through. It was a huge city and I honestly thought it was just a tiny town in Southern Ireland. It’s just very difficult to find parking, and if your phone is in airplane mode…..and you miss your destination, then it disappears like a fart in the wind and you are on your own!  The worst part for us is we had so much luggage bc of our daughter that we rented a gigantic van that was more like a mini bus (short bus hahaha). The roads are super narrow in certain parts.  I drove up on curbs every single day. 😂

If you go to smaller towns, then I would suggest renting the car.  If you’re going to any big cities for the day, I’d Uber it.

Amazing pics!  Daughter did a 3 week summer class in Galway back in her college days.

Binky, the Killary Lodge looks awesome. Enjoy!

I am going to Woodstock.  Bethel Performing Arts Center for a Dave Matthews show (our yearly roadie), on a Wed. night. Having lunch in the Poconos on the way up, go to show, next day will do the Woodstock museum. While I was looking for accommodations, I found a couple that runs both a few stand alone restaurants and a few B&Bs.  I hope to pick one the restaurants to have dinner the 2nd night.  Short trip, 2 nights, short drive, nothing fancy yet sharing these trips with my daughter has been a really good and special time.

awesome!  very similar route to the one the wife & i took during our trip...which was also our last real trip before covid. <_<  we also flew into shannon, stayed in galway for a few nights, then to cork, then to kilkenny, then to dublin for our last couple days. drove the entire time until dropping off the rental when we arrived in dublin. it's such a great country to visit. we can't wait to go back & see the parts we missed.

glad you enjoyed it.

oh, and your baby looks strangely familiar..................

I legitimately stole your trip idea when my wife and I had to immediately pivot 1 month prior.  We were about to book a trip to Amsterdam, Bruges, and Paris, and Amsterdam practically went on lock down because of Covid.  Wife asked me where I was going to do my research for another trip, and I informed her that it would be from the travel bug thread on the Eagles Message board   She didn't like that, but I couldn't think of a better idea.  And it was one of the best experiences of our lives.  I will buy you a beer if we ever meet!

no way!  I'm glad one of my posts was finally useful for someone.   i spent a sheet-ton of time planning that trip...and it was worth every minute.

i'll take you up on that beer if our paths should ever cross.
