I have to go somewhere for vacation for 1 week.  It will either be late June or early/mid July, depending on how my schedule breaks.  Short notice.

Wife and 2 year old in tow.  Do not want anywhere on East coast.  Flight must be <6 hours.

Ideas?

Where do you live?  Delaware Valley?

A 2-year-old is the worst.  Too young to know where he/she is or have fun, but is a serious anchor on your plans.

July would mean up north for pleasant weather.  Humidity sets in.  North New England or Canada would be nice.

Nova Scotia is pretty nice, and under the radar in the US.  Halifax is an up-and-coming mid-sized city that is growing into Canada's next big metro.  It's like Raleigh.  There are a ton of quaint little towns that your wife would love, like Peggy's Cove or Lunenburg.  The weather would be pretty pleasant, or even a little cool if it's raining.

Nova Scotia can sometimes be tough to get to with a direct flight, but if you find one, it's a short flight, which is good for the 2 y.o.  It's not a place people from the Mid-Atlantic US go to: tourists are mainly Canadians, New Englanders, and cruise ship passengers.  Canada would probably be cheaper than Europe, as well.

If you absolutely need a direct flight, there are other options as well.

I will be in port liberty Bayonne NJ on Friday morning.

What's the easiest way to park and get in to NYC for the World trade center memorial?

Do I need to reserve a parking space ahead of time or can I just show up at a lot for the stanton island ferry or something? Any suggestions?

Park in Jersey City and take the PATH to Christopher Street.  There's a PATH station about a block north of city hall.

If you go on a Saturday or Sunday, you can park for free on the street in Jersey City, provided you can find a spot.  (At least it was like that about 5 years ago.)  I used to go into Manhattan for the day on Sundays and park for free for the whole afternoon.

I'm headed up to Queens tomorrow for my daughter and I's annual Dave Matthew's roadie.  Will be in Manhattan on Saturday.  We are driving in but leaving the car parked.  Taking an UIber to the ferry terminal.  We'll be walking an ferry boat riding all day.

HE-Not sure if there's a ferry terminal in Bayonne or if it's just for the big cruise ships. Staten Island looks like the closest.  Or NY Water Way will take you to Wall St

I also read today that the State Department put out a level 2 travel alert for the Dominican Republic.  Hoping it doesn't get any worse than that as I'm scheduled to go there in November.

Yes,  we will be getting off one of those big ships.

We can see the ferry while we are on the ship.  Super close by.  Wasn't sure how hard it is to park there though.

Going there next month.  Its just a standard warning to avoid high crime areas, keep your guard up, etc.  Basically don't be wandering the cities (or country side) at night on your own and expect to be super safe.

Will be looking for your update next month Gern.   Thank you

Mother-daughter annual Dave show and weekend was a success.  Apartment in Queens that we rented was huge. Bed was very comfortable.  Owner was great. The venue was really close and they shut down the streets around the stadium so it is very walkable and there is a train stop right there as there is no parking.  There was a downpour of rain during the show and the band actually changed up their set to include a song about rain. I don’t know the song.  Apparently it was a huge deal.  My Toms shoes are still damp. Shows are over by 10 pm since it’s a residential area.

We spent yesterday in lower Manhattan. Took the ferry over. Sergi was our tour guide (he was missing a few front teeth) and he had a Heavy accent.  Did the walk around Wall St and the 9/11 memorial and he left us at Battery Park which included a ride over to the Statue and Ellis Island.  We didn’t get off at the Statue.  Did Ellis Island. It was huge and a lot to see. Walked up to Pier 17 and did the Tin   Building.   Walked backed down to Pier 11 to catch ferry back to Long Isalnd City.  I didn’t have a counter but think we walked several miles. Ubered from ferry to apartment.  We drove up and just left the car parked for the weekend.  Some pics.

the vocal stylings of christopher cross were much appreciated by the other beach goers.

I went to Catania, Sicily last September for Navy reserve duty.

Italians are really nice people

People in Rome like to flex; I saw a bently, ferrari spider, and mercedes benz pick up truck

The coliseum was the primary reason I took a day trip to Rome and I loved every minute of the tour see pictures below. There was a museum inside the coliseum and the outside was surrounded by excavation sites.

I ate 7 different pizzas and still liked the pizza hut pan pizza I had on Sigonella Navy Base the best ^_^

If I go to Italy again I would go to  Sardinia because I love to be near water

I found more. The first two are the of the pick up.

3-4 excavation sites surrounding colesium

5-6 Trevi fountain

7 is the $5 pizza I had..

Every picture after the pizza is a random picture of Sicily. I'm sure its different in Rome since its a major city but in the smaller town near the NATO base we worked from they had a risposa in the middle of the day which is the Italian equivalent of a siesta.

Portugal.  Went a bit over on the flight duration, but I figured it was worth a shot.

Impressive spot for a 1-week vacation.  How much was your flight per person?
