They pushed my flight to Salt Lake City back so much that I would arrive after my connection to Seattle leaves. So now I fly out tomorrow morning. Thankfully I live in Wilmington and am flying out of Philadelphia, so I went home to sleep in my own bed. But those guys owe me for my AirBnB for the night.

August 6, 20241 yr Author Doing a family trip through the Dolomites and Taormina, Sicily, with Venice as the gateway. The vibe in Taormina rivals anywhere I’ve seen.

The line to speak to customer service in the airport was, no exaggeration, at least 5-6 hours long. I waited for almost 3 (and doubt we hit half-way), when my phone app finally was giving me the option to re-book alternative flights that same day. So I did get food, but had I waited to talk to someone I would have missed the only remaining flight leaving that day.

August 9, 20241 yr Author Etna in the background…actually erupted while we were here. Someone at the pool saw EMB on my phone and asked if I was an eagles fan.
August 9, 20241 yr Super nice looking place! I'd like to go there. Guess you had some of the Nero d'Avola? Always liked that stuff.

I love Nero D’Avola but haven’t had any yet. Probably stupid that I haven’t. In the Dolomites and Venice, I did lots of Valpolicellas (if that’s how you spell it). Once in Sicily, I’ve been trying all these "Etna Rosso’s.” Very mineral heavy, which I like a lot. Never really had one before this trip.
August 12, 20241 yr me planning trip to italy & seeing how much it will cost: the wife: are there any castle's we can stay in? me:

Lots of good ways to enjoy and stay in Italy (and those countries too) at all price points. Tuscany has some castles, but that's still not really the vibe for Italy.

Plan well, it is going to be tight but you'll get to all the major sites. How are you getting between the cities? You renting a car?

Driving isn't that tough between towns but parking in the cities would suck. Tough to drop Florence but if it was me I'd do two places and have more time in each. Venice is unique for sure and "happy wife happy life" so it would be Rome/Venice. Rome is easy a 4 or 5-day place if you want to see everything and spend time in places. The Vatican is a must do multi hour site for example. Wife just went to Rome with her mom and our daughter and it was a 4 night trip and seemed to be a good length (though they've all been prior). We were just in Florence in 2022 and it was great but also very crowded. We went in last week Sept 2022 with a bunch of old couple friends. We did a couple nights in Florence and then out to a Villa in the middle of Tuscany which was wineries, hill towns, and Sienna (very cool town). Maybe keep that one for a trip down the road.
August 14, 20241 yr Don't forget that Venice imposed a tourist entry tax earlier this year. I don't know where to look for it and buy a ticket or whatnot, but you don't want to get there and find out you're not allowed in.
