My great-great grandmother is from the Azores and great-great grandfather is from Madeira, another Portuguese colony in the middle of the Atlantic. Great places and awesome people, so I hear. Have not had the privilege yet, but it's on the list.

Nice! Well worth the trip. I'm up in Rhode Island now so tons of Portuguese and Azoreans people/restaurants/shops and it's making me want to go back. If you ever go I'd be more than happy to share some recs.

Beautiful.  I was about to guess Oregon before seeing the caption.

This one is from my favorite spot in the world.  It's not off the beaten path, but for my tastes, it scores a clean sweep at #1 on beauty, ambiance, and food.

Blah, was going to be part of our honeymoon...Fing virus

We did a week on the Amalfi coast some years back.  Stunning area.  If you go definitely get out to Capri and if you have time a little further out to Ischia.

The little town a bit further up inland called Ravello is arguably the nicest so don't just stay down on the actual coast in Amalfi, Positano, etc.

The time to travel will come again.  You'll get it in.  When you do go, let me know if you have any questions.  I savor every corner of that place, restaurants, bars, hotels, etc.

This is one from our trip to Venice.  It's a very unique and interesting city.  I loved it and can't wait to go back.  paco was shoved by a 90 yr old Venetian woman while boarding a water bus and doesn't want to go back now

Like x100.  Ravello, Capri, and Ischia are all incredible, all different.

Ravello is a paradise in the clouds.  You could see most of it in a day trip from Positano or you could stay for 2 weeks and not get sick of it.  Villa Ruffalo and Cimbrone can't be missed.  Palazzo Avino is a gorgeous hotel there.

Ischia is a touch off the beaten path and removed from most tourists.  They are famous for pastas with rabbit ragut.  They are also famous for their volcanic spas.DSC00758.thumb.jpeg.309833ba8d8e64a7bb69c386891b9d57.jpeg

Capri is stunning as well.  In the high season, the main town of Capri is very congested with tourists.  You'll have better, more authentic meals along the mainland coast than on the island of Capri.  If you charter a small boat either alone or with a group of friends, you can circumnavigate the island and swim in many of the isolated and private coves, even in high season.  The trip to Anacapri (town on the same island) with a chair lift up Mt. Solaro is an amazing experience.  If you either spend the night or come on your own boat instead of the ferry, the crowds evaporate after the last ferry...you can explore and have the island to yourself.

I'll take you up on that. Maybe @DrPhilly too.  We like to avoid tourist traps, hate being stationary too long, and Fing love trying as much food as possible so advice from someone who has been there is always huge.

On a more depressing note, what has everyone's experience been with cancellations on travel?

I had to cancel an Iceland trip, which included pre-paid hotels, airfare, and an admission to the blue lagoon, a big tourist attraction there.  I know these are hard times, but these vendors are doing everything they can to clamp down on the money.  The blue lagoon only refunded 80% even though they are closed on my date.  The airline is only offering refunds if the flight gets cancelled (need to wait until 3 days before to find out)...I'm almost certain it will be, considering Iceland isn't allowing American tourists on the arrival date.  The hotel is only offering vouchers.

Happy to help when the time comes.  That's basically how I travel.

Just as you say @eagle45 Capri central was a bit crowded and touristy but once off that main district it was incredible and my favorite though I loved all of it of course.  I could go to any one of Positano, Ravello, Capri, Ischia and stay for an entire week for sure.

Pretty much everything we put into for our wedding was "refunded" via voucher unfortunately, but they didn't charge any rescheduling fees or anything like that (which would have been a real sheety move). The hotel/vendors are all paid for whenever we decide to reschedule knowing it may well be over a year from now.  Flights are also via voucher but can be used any time in the next 2 years which we will use easily.

Kinda sucks in the short run but we did purposely use local vendors and a small personal resort so I at least feel better knowing we're keeping the people hit the hardest afloat for a bit.

The only issue I have so far are some flights. Vouchers for those.

Sorry about your wedding plans.

We cancelled a vacation rental in VA Beach.  We will either get a refund less $250. if the week re-rents, or we can book another week in the future.

So sorry you have to go through that, but I'm glad you had some success with refunds and vouchers.

If you KNOW you are taking them up on a rain check in the next 2 years, then the vouchers are just the easiest way to do it.

For various reasons, I'm just not 100% sure I'll be pulling off my long weekend in Iceland in the next year, so I'm just going to recoup what cash I can rather than risk wasting vouchers.  It could have been a lot worse, so if that's the only thing I had to cancel, I consider myself lucky.
