Time for an overreaction post. We really didn't get any pass rush last night other than when Fangio sent the house. With BG up there in age, and losing Reddick to the Jets, who will step up and lead the team in sacks? I find it hard to believe we will break 40 as a team. Unless Sweat has another good year and gets 12-13. Say 6-7 between Carter and Davis. Other than that it's Bryce Huff. For a team that always addresses the O-line and D-line first, I don't see an aggressive pass rush this year.

Where did all our sacks come from in 2022? Reddick didn't get any in the first two games that year and the team had 3 combined sacks in the first two.

Overreaction is a good word. Last year, we didn't have coverage like we did last night, but we had good coverage in 2022.

Does no one realize that Zach Baun is on pace for 34 sacks?

And Carter doesn't collect sacks, he collects acls. He's on pace for 17.

I just said this in another thread.  We can't draw any conclusions because of the field conditions.  Let's wait a few weeks...

This is no big surprise. Team lacked a decent pass rush last year. Now the team is without Cox and Reddick.  Team doesn't have anyone Elite on the D-line for a consistent pass rush.

Think edge will be our first round pick next year.

It’s going to have to come from Carter and blitzing LBs. Sweat should get a few sacks and I’m sure Graham will chip in but yeah there’s no dominant guy. Huff was as feared ineffective.

Pressure doesn't always show up as sacks. Love finished last season averaging around 70% completion percentage and he only completed 50% on the night. Sometimes, they just make the QB throw the ball before they are set and cause errant throws or bad decisions.

I think Nolan Smith looked much more promising than expected. Hopefully he gets more experience and by the second half of the season I have a feeling he could be the guy.

The reason blatant actual fouls like this aren't getting called is because the umps have been told to call nitpicky penalties on OT's for lining up half an inch behind the centers beltline, because obviously the games fans have been crying out for minor O Line alignment issues to be cleaned up rather than more consistent reffing of O Lines stopping sacks by holding.

This is the same sort of thinking that leads to a roughing the passer call when a defender 'lands on the QB with their full weight' during a sack, but not if the defender performs a suplex on the QB to bring him down.

On the original question, it's a one game sample on a rough field, if we're still struggling in 2 or 3 games I'll start to worry.

Between the atrocious field (even the Packers struggled to get pressure) and the holding the Packers did, I’m not ready to bail on this pass rush. Too soon to overreact. It was obvious the edge rushers couldn’t get any footing out there. I saw Huff sliding all over the place. The receivers and corners kept falling down. Let’s see how they do at home next week.

i think the majority of our sacks will come from our linebackers. the D line will give the pressure and i think Dean and Baun and the others will clean it up.

They will come grasshopper..they will come.. Huff gets 2 this week..and I think Carter 1 , Dean or White gets 1.

Did you see the field conditions?

That was my thought.  Tough to judge based on the conditions.

Genuine question though… why can we use that as a reason to explain our poor pass rush but not to balance that out on the opponent? Why was Baun able to have success but not Huff?

Baun played 67 snaps and Huff played 30. I'm not saying that's "the" reason, but it is a factor.

To answer your other question, people really should not be drawing conclusions based off the results of that game. The conditions affected everybody and not always at the same time as others. Barkley had a good day, but his first carry was a 5 yard loss --- because he slipped on that play. There were a lot of unusually low PFF grades for players because almost everybody on both teams had bad plays due to footing issues. Baun probably put up better stats than we'll see from him on average, but I won't be surprised if we see him get better PFF grades on average.

The win is more valuable than the film of that game.

Worst case scenario we can always find one or 2 in @hputenis's mouth.

Well duh the Sack Shack of course, where else?!

Sacks from the LBzzzzz😱😱

I'm ok with a sack or 3 a game, but I feel that QB pressures are important as well. Pressure that QB and get him to throw an INT. I'll take an INT over a sack.

Most likely, they will be a "pressure" team. They may not get a lot of sacks. But they will get close, and almost/sack. Enough to cause incompletions or turnovers. This is where other factors come into play.

Sweat was great in his role on a line with Hargrave, Cox, Graham. His knees allowed him to be fresh. Usually as the season went on, he would really get productive. As an every down player? I never saw him (due to injury) being an effective every down player. His thing is Speed.

I still think they should have kept Reddick. Huff is young and it's going to take him time to fit in his role on this defense.

Carter = Gets doubled a lot.

Davis = Eats space, no rush/sack threat.

Yeah I think that’s completely fair. But if those pressures can lead to misplaced passes or allowing our coverage to do its job then I guess that’s enough.

Yeah he’s going to get doubled so much which is a shame because there’s nobody he’s opening up opportunities for. Usually if a DT is getting doubled it opens things up for a DE to go one on one but there’s nobody we can rely on.
