RIP to a great Eagle

RIP.

Damn, passing away on Christmas makes it suck even more.

My Wife's Dad passed away two years ago, a week before her Birthday. Thank God it wasn't on her B-Day.

RIP to a great Eagle.

Bergey was one of a few prominent players that the Eagles acquired from Paul Brown's Bengals during the 70's.  Mike McCormack played for the Browns when Paul Brown was coaching the team, and apparently had a close relationship with him.  Stan Walters, Mike Boryla and Horst Muhlmann were other notable players that the Bengals shipped over the Eagles.  Trouble is that McCormack gave up the farm and left the Eagles with no high draft picks for several years.  Made Vermeil's achievements with the team that much more notable - turning around a perennial loser, a moribund franchise with no meaningful draft picks.

Sad to lose a family member at any given time, but even more so on Christmas day.

His is one of the few jerseys that I have, which was given to me back in the early 80's by one of my brothers friends who had it since the 70s.

Grew up playing sports with Bill's sons and met Bill, and his wife on a number of occasions.  He was an amazing guy.  Very down to earth and humble, always had a ton of respect for him and his family.  Very sad for his family to lose their dad on Christmas, but may he rest in peace.  He was one of our all time greats and the type of guy that all men should measure themselves against.

LOVED 66. Peace, Mr. Bergey.

Met Bill few times, spent several hours with him at a wedding once and didn’t talk a word of football.  Also watched his son practice and play for the wings lacrosse.  He was a Great man!  RIP!

R.I.P. Mr. Bergey. He was a good guy. After he retired, he would walk the parking lot before games and briefly hang out with the tailgaters. I met him that way years ago.

While I never met Bill Bergey personally, I do recall my Sophmore or Junior year, he came to my HS to give a speech about a topic I can't recall right now. He did however tell a funny hunting story that I always remembered.

A fan of his, or a fan of the Birds had met him and apparently had told Bergey that he was free to go hunting on his property any time he wished. So one day, Bill and a friend of his took him up on the offer and went to his place. Bill went to the front door to announce that they were there, and the man who had lived on a farm had ask Bill if he could do him a favor and put down his mule which the man didn't have the heart to do himself. Bill was reluctant at first, but agreed to do so.

So Bill went to the friend that came with him and told him that the guy said they couldn't hunt on his property. The friend was surprised, and Bill said something like, "Yeah, we came out this way to hunt, and now he's saying we can't. I'm going to shoot this guy's mule". The friend in disbelief said he couldn't do that, and Bill insisting he was going to do it for the guy changing his mind after they traveled out there. So Bill approached the mule, took the shot and it fell over dead. Bill was standing there laughing when he heard two shots behind him. Bill turns around and his friend says: "I got 2 of his cows. Come on, let's go!"

That's great!!

I wonder if the friend really did shoot 2 cows.  Explain that to the property owner!
