January 30Jan 30 Hegseth blaming DEI for the crash involving an Army helicopter. I get the sense he wants an all-white military

I mean the new ones with the white phosphor are pretty damn good, but I have limited experience with them. Not sure what tubes they were using.

I figured they were better than the one I used 20 years ago, but I just don’t see the need for them to be used in that area. Even if they needed that qualification, there are better places around DC to check off that box.
January 30Jan 30 There's a big push for AI doing surgeries in my circles. I'm as uncomfortable with that as I am with AI doing ATC.

If an AI effup extends recovery by a day or two is one thing. If the AI effup benefits the funeral business it's quite another. To have new technologies perfect 'out of the box' would likely result in products so long in development that they're obsolete when finally ready for release. Yet releasing a product with flaws you didn't detect during development may buy a personal injury lawyer another boat or plane. It's a tough business.

They are talking about AI making the incisions and actually performing the surgery. While I'm not exactly thrilled with all of the surgeons I encounter, I don't want a non human operating on me.

I’m not suggesting we roll it out tomorrow,, but that’s where technology is headed. Computers are already more reliable and accurate than humans in many applications, and they will only get better. AI might not be the goal now, but our ATC System needs a major technology upgrade.

At some point, future generations will be amazed we trusted another human being to cut into us.
January 30Jan 30 I've been deliberately avoiding opening this thread all day. I was thinking, I don't want to see how they managed to make this crash another farcical, protracted political melee. Shame on me. My curiosity won out. JFC you turds.

They've been doing some upgrades. They've also redone some routes and created a bunch of new ones based100% on satellite based navigation. There's been an overhaul of the routes and arrivals into the Philly metro area but I've had no experience with them. One thing among many that made no sense to me is that all traffic arriving at Philly Int'l, Northeast Philly,Trenton and all the smaller airports from the southwest passed over one fix. The same was/is true of all traffic from the west-northwest over a different fix. You don't suppose that would limit capacity, do you? And it made for high controller workloads and necessitated other controllers to sequence traffic. Now throw in some thunderstorms or Navigation Aid shutdown. Fun times. As I said I don't know if/what has changed with the route structure overhaul.

I’m reminded of a trial the DoD did with an AI powered drone with human oversight. This was all done in simulation, but with the same software. So the parameters were that the AI powered drone would find targets, a human operator would determine if the drone could strike, and then the drone would follow the human operator orders. So a few times after being told "no”, the drone took out the human operator and then proceeded to hit every target it wanted to. So they added in that the drone could not take out the human operator and redid the test. After being told no again a few times in a row, the AI did not strike the human operator. Instead, it struck the human operators communications system, rendering it unable to be told no, then it proceeded to hit the targets it wanted to. As much as it pains me to say as someone who prides himself on his logic to a fault, sometimes human emotions are a good thing. We still have them after about 400,000 years of evolution. That’s probably for a reason.
