One NFL GM Believes Eagles' Howie Roseman Has Next Saquon Barkley-Like Move Up His Sleeve

The Eagles could be looking to make another big swing this offseason.

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman made the move of the offseason last year when he brought in Saquon Barkley on a three-year deal. Barkley led the NFL in rushing and was a key cog in Philly's Super Bowl LIX-winning run.

Now, Roseman may be gearing up for his next franchise-altering move, as the Eagles try to reload for a title-defending season. According to The Athletic's Dianni Russini, an anonymous NFL GM thinks Roseman could make a move for Myles Garrett, who recently requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns.

"Garrett could be this year’s version of Saquon Barkley for Howie [Roseman],” an anonymous NFL GM said to Russini and The Athletic. "He’s an impact add and isn’t a free-agent overpay. Howie’s not afraid to try stuff, and it fits where they are as a team.”

If Philadelphia does make a move for the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, they'd have some tough decisions to make with their current free agents—a list that includes Josh Sweat, Zack Baun, Milton Williams and Mekhi Becton.

ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported Tuesday that the Eagles wanted to prevent the Browns from trading Garrett to their NFC East rival Washington Commanders, who they met in the NFC championship game. The best way to do that is making Cleveland an offer they can't refuse. And according to new reports, Philly's interest in bringing in Garrett is real.

Roseman knows that the commanders are under new management and are making the right moves in rebuilding.  They have a tough coaching staff and some good young players.....and a load of cap space.

But the eagles roster is still more talented and deeper,,....but free agency could chip away at that.  Fortunately, Roseman knows how to wheel and deal,  and the eagles scouting departments are good at identifying talent that can be poached from other teams and developed.  Underutilized talent that can come in a contribute.

I think the commanders will consistently challenge the eagles for the next few years.

I 100% agree that trading for Garrett would be a move Howie would make.  My biggest concern would be what we have to give up for him.  He's 29 and will turn 30 during next season.  How many more years of "elite" play does he have left?  The move would/should certainly pay off for the 2025 season...but what about 2026 and beyond?  When will the inevitable decline begin?  Varies from player to player.  I suppose the bet would be we'd get 2 years of elite play before the decline begins.

Would giving up 2 firsts be worth it?  I imagine the minimum we'd have to give up would be our first this year and either a 2nd next year or a 3rd that could become a 2nd based on milestones in 2025.

I think IF Howie makes this kind of move that is mostly in trying to capitalize on our chances to grab another Lombardi with a loaded roster before free agency and father time starts chipping away at it.

Agreed, and that's what the move would be about.  I'm all for it!  I'm just looking at the deal as just the deal and value because while it would definitely be a swing-for-the-fences type of move for 2025, there are certainly no guarantees and if the homerun shot is a foul ball, I would just hope that the move wouldn't kill us in 2026 and beyond.

I meant to include in the previous response that this kind of move isn't necessarily looking past 2026.  But I will also add that I don't really think he is going to make this move.  I think he saw what happened with a very young roster at many key spots and will prefer to use those draft picks to add yet more young talent (which will be on much cheaper rookie contracts which will be super beneficial when it comes to locking up players like Carter, Jurgens, Smith, etc.).

I agree with that too.  It'll be interesting to see if he does make a move like trading for Garrett.  I can just as easily see him making the move or not making the move (for the reasons you said).  But a big part of me thinks Howie will want to capitalize on their current position and going for it all again in 2025.  Acquiring Garrett fits it really nicely in that he plays a position they highly value, it will likely be their biggest need this offseason, and it won't count against the comp pick formula at a time when they could get two 3rd-round-level picks for Sweat and Williams.

The pivot move will be signing Mack...though that'll offset a comp pick (but who cares, really?).

Really hard to get a good feel for which direction Howie will go (as usual).  I do know he loves him some comp picks!  And rightfully so when they could be as high as 2 x 3rds.  But sacrificing one of them (to sign a different EDGE in FA) would be a lot less net loss than giving up a 1st (and likely another somewhat high pick if you buy in to what some think he might be worth).  Anyway, strap yourself in and get ready for another fun ride!  :excited:

Maybe the Saquan Barkley-like-move he was predicting was just the extension?
