Months ago, he might have signed for 4/50 ... but after the Super Bowl, everyone's price tag went up, especially guys that made plays all over the place including a diving interception.Β  Howie should have made him that 4/50 offer in October.

Howie said he doesn't do extensions during the season because it causes distractions... I agree with him on this even if it ultimately costs you more in the endΒ

Barkley is a great leader and player and got extended. Baun is a great leader and player and now is extended.

Just the way I like it.

More please! 😁

What I actually wish Howie had done is, in the initial contract, offer the same $4M the first year, but add like a non-guaranteed $8M and $10M salary for second and third years.Β  Baun probably would have signed something like that.Β  Those second and third years end are simply a team option unlikely to be exercised, but if the guy blows up like Baun did, it saves you a lot of money.Β  Howie did a handful of those types of contracts a few years back.Β  He probably did not bother to try it for Baun because he thought it was so unlikely that Baun would break out like he did.

Β

I wonder how much cap room they now have left after the Baun signing.Β

I think just about everyone is happy to have him back. Such a great player.

Yeah I agree... I wanted to run Howie out of town years ago if im being honest but man what an awesome job he's done... He really is one of if not the best gm in the league...Β

Yeah, but at that price I'd almost rather have Williams for a bit more. 17 million is a lot when I was expecting 12 or 13 max. Not sad he is back, though. Good for him.

Who’s the last LB we had who had the amount of impact on games that Baun had last year? I’m thinking early 2000s Trotter, before he left for Washington. Before that? Seth Joyner.Β

Wasn’t Seth DPOY once? I don’t know if the Eagles ever had a player that seemed this impactful at the linebacker position in two decades like you mentioned, but I don’t believe Trotter was like Baun especially after his knee injury.

Knowing Howie he probably just gained cap space . πŸ˜‚

I thought he was but it went to Pat Swilling.

Swilling got 27 first place votes. Seth (18) and Reggie (16) split 34 first place votes.

Jerome and Clyde each got 1 vote

Now all Baun has to do is continue to play like the best in the league, even though none of us had ever heard of him before the Eagles signed him.

We never heard of him because the Saints played him out of position and not to his strengths.Β  Β The difference a great DC makes.Β

Said this in another thread but this always happens when guys get signed. The money looks big and then a year later it looks like a bargain. The cap keeps going up and so does the money.Β

Yeah this was a great and necessary move. Was hoping we could get him for 12 to 15 million per year but he is a complete linebacker and keeping it to 3 years (probably with a potential out after 2) is big considering his age.Β

Seth in the late 80s and early 90s was off the charts -- I actually think he's more deserving to be in the HOF than Eric Allen

I'm just posting this because I was going to say the same thing, but also add: "Howie doesn't use high draft picks on DBs."

Β

He didn't, till he did and saw what the result was

Howie often does things that Howie never does.

(And he sometimes does things that he always does.)

I was very confident they would make this happen. Very glad it's early and out of the way.

Howie is taking care of key Super Bowl season contributors. He's now paid big for RB & LB.

Damn I called 4/50 months ago. 3/50 is reeeediculous

I’m assuming he won’t end up seeing the 50.Β

Then Baun would have likely wanted more money after this year. They probably would have ended doing something like they did with Barkley. Players aren’t going to accept being severely underpaid for multiple years

Meh ... maybe.Β  if a guy signs a contract, he signs a contract ... he would have known the risk.Β  One other point -- Baun is 28 years old, so he might only have another year or two of prime.

Baun was much better than Trotter ever was, and I loved Trot. Β Last LB to make that kind of impact for us was Seth Joyner.

I couldn't agree more. I am really happy they brought Baun back and it makes them a much better team to have him as opposed to not. That being said, this is not a great contract. I wouldn't have budged over 15 million and I even thought that was a million or two too high.
