Why Jim Schwartz says 'time is starting to run short' for Eagles' Sidney Jones

plpThe training camp that was supposed to be different for Sidney Jones has been just more of the same.

And time is running out for that to change.

Jones, who has been hurt for virtually all of his Eagles tenure, hasn’t practiced since last Tuesday, and defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz sounded an ominous warning to Jones on Monday.

"Our time is starting to run short,” he said when asked about Jones. "The only thing we can do as coaches is coach the guys that are available to practice. There's still time, but time is starting to creep in on us. We're less than three weeks from our opener right now.”

Jones got through just one day of full-team training camp before suffering yet another injury. Although the Eagles haven’t been disclosing injury specifics this summer, Jones is listed with a "lower-body” injury.

Hamstrings have often been his problem the last two years, but whether that's currently the case is unknown.

Opening day is 20 days away, and there’s no telling when – or if - Jones will return. Or whether he can stay healthy when he does return.

Let’s recap Jones’ career:

- Blew out Achilles during pro day in March of 2017. Played in one game as a rookie, getting 29 snaps.
- In 2018, he suffered a hamstring injury in Week 6 against the Giants and missed three games.
- He returned against the Saints but aggravated the injury and left the game early.
- He missed one game and then in his second game back aggravated the hamstring again and missed the final five games of the season.
- Last year, missed five games and parts of three others with hamstring injuries. Played fewer than 10 reps on defense in five others.

Jones has started eight games as an Eagle and finished just four of them without getting hurt.

He’s played at least 10 snaps in only 16 of 53 games since the Eagles drafted him in the second round.

He finished last year healthy and made some big plays down the stretch, only to be inactive in the playoff loss to Seattle. He began this training camp No. 2 on the depth chart behind Avonte Maddox before getting hurt on the second day of full-team practice.

On Monday, Jones was out at practice.

Watching, once again.

"Sid is into it,” Schwartz said. "He's done a good job of staying up and everything else when he hasn't been able to practice. But as coaches, guys that are on the field are the guys that are getting the reps, and the guys that are available (are) doing those kinds of things, and just unfortunately he has not been there for this last week or so.”

I think it may be time to cut him...

How about because she's as soft as they come.

Cindy is very very very soft.

I had a pretty strong feeling this is exactly what we were going to see.  Shame.  Hate seeing another high pick not work out but I really think at this point there shouldn't be any expectations of him finally "putting it all together" or "taking that next step" ... what we've seen is what he is.
